There always seems to be confusion over Mace and what it is. Mace is a brand of defense spray marketed by Mace Security International (MSI). Their most popular formulas include PepperGard, Tripleaction, Pepper Gel. The popularity of the Mace brand has led to many referring to all pepper sprays as Mace.
Stun guns are designed to key on a persons central nervous system. It dumps it’s energy into the muscles at a high pulse frequency that makes the muscles work very rapidly, but not efficiently. This rapid work cycle depletes blood sugar by converting it to lactic acid all in just seconds. The resulting energy loss makes it difficult to move and function. At the same time, the tiny neurological impulses that travel throughout the body to direct muscle movement are interrupted. This causes disorientation and loss of balance and leaves the attacker in a passive and confused condition for several minutes. Still, there is no significant effect on the heart and other organs.
Pepper spray is very effective as a nonlethal self-defense option. It is a chemical compound derived from chiles. The result is oleoresin capsicum (OC), the main ingredient in pepper spray. Capsicum is finely ground and mixed with a solvent then evaporated leaving a wax-like resin-the oleoresin capsicum. That is mixed with an emulsifier like propylene glycol to suspend the OC in water then pressurized to make it an aerosol in pepper spray
The answer is really simple. You never know when an assault can happen. They are, by definition, random acts and can happen at any time. So you should carry a pepper spray with you at all times. That is why the key chain pepper spray is one of the most popular. But there are models for home use, for athletes on the go, disguised models to give you an added advantage in an assault situation and models for outdoor situations such as back country wilderness defense against bear attacks. In short there's a pepper spray for almost any situation.
A short burst of pepper spray provides immediate and intense pain to any would-be assailant. It causes severe inflammation of the membranes, eyes are swelled shut by the excessive tearing, the respiratory tract becomes inflamed and breathing is difficult, the capillaries of the eyes swell causing temporary blindness and there is severe, coughing, choking and wheezing, all of which will disable an assailant for up to 45 minutes.
Pepper sprays are the most widely used and most popular self-defense product in the world. They are used by both men and women as their primary means of self-defense in an assault situation. Law enforcement officers all carry pepper sprays. USPS mail carriers are all issued pepper sprays for defense against dog attacks. Young college-age women who are highly susceptible to rape and attempted rape should all carry pepper spray. Women are the targets of violence in nine of every ten cases and should carry them too. Anyone who goes into the back country for hiking, camping, hunting or fishing should carry bear pepper spray. There is a specially formulated dog pepper spray that can be used for defense against dog attacks. It should be standard equipment for any athlete who is a walker, jogger or bicyclist.
