Many of us have resolved to improve our lives this new year by spending more time with family, being thankful for our blessings, adopting an exercise regimen and practicing patience with co-workers. Resolutions can be life changing especially for those of us who have a plan and stick to it. The feeling of accomplishment and self gratification are immeasurable.
I wonder though, how many of us vowed to make personal safety and home security a priority this new year. My guess is not nearly enough! Consider that every few seconds a violent crime is being committed in our country. In the time it takes you to read this article murders, forcible rapes, burglary, theft, assaults, and many other types of crimes will have been committed. We live in a dangerous society were statistics show that nearly 1 in four of us will fall victim to a violent crime at some point along the way. So chances are good that you’ve been victimized or know friends, co-workers, or family members who have been.
You may be surprised to know that there are several things you can begin doing today that will drastically reduce your chances of becoming a victim of crime; by actively adopting some new principles you will become a “tough target” and criminals don’t like “tough targets” it’s much easier for them to move on and find an easier target.
Basic Safety Tips to Help Avoid Crime
- Be alert and aware at all times! Easier said than done; just look around you the next time you are out and about. Most of us are doing everything BUT being aware.
Here is a simple exercise that will help you develop your awareness skills. Go to the mall or other busy area and park your vehicle near the main entrance. Now take out a piece of paper and pencil; now start people watching! Pick ten people (one at a time) and jot down everything you see them doing incorrectly as it relates to awareness and crime.
- Most of us are creatures of habit and criminals know this. Vary your daily routine to ensure that you don’t become too predictable.
Think about it, if I know that you’ll be at work Monday thru Friday from 8 am to 6 pm; then your home becomes an easy target for me. Instead come home at lunch once in a while. Vary the times you leave and get home if possible. If not, ask a friend of relative to drop in from time to time and choose multiple routes to and from work.
- Lock your doors; this includes the home, office and car. Locks are our first line of defense.
You would probably be surprised at the number of people who become crime victims simply because they did not lock up. A friend of mine recently left her vehicle running for about 2 minutes while dropping her child off at daycare. When she returned to her vehicle her purse and laptop were missing. In addition to a laptop and very expensive purse the criminals got cash, credit cards, drivers license, check book and much more. This could have been avoided by simply turning the engine off and locking the doors.
- Make your home or business a “tough target” by using floodlights or spotlights around the perimeter, using motion sensors, door and window alarms, and reinforced deadbolts. Entryway security is crucial yet relatively easy to secure.
- Be informed and educated about crime and trends within your community
Knowing the crime trends within your community will give you the ability to better prepare and protect yourself and family.
- Get actively involved
Join or start a neighborhood watch or other anti crime association. Engage local law enforcement to determine the resources available to you. Take advantage of resources such as home security evaluations and self defense training classes.
I challenge you to make personal safety and home security a priority this year.

Robbery is a unique crime because it threatens both our person and property. In America, robbery accounts for over one-third of all violent crimes. Forty percent of robberies were classified as forceful without a weapon. Unlike many other crimes, studies show that up to 90 percent of all robbers are strangers to their victims.
There are some common sense things you can start doing today to help prevent falling victim to small business robbery. Businesses should be kept clean and in order. A well organized businesses gives the impression that you care. If you have a stock room or back room, keep the door closed or whatever steps are necessary to block of view. You don’t want to advertise or show criminals what you are storing in the back room. The other benefit of blocking off the back is that potential trouble makers won’t know if you are alone or have additional workers or employees on the premises. Focus on visibility, you should be able to see the entrance and outside from almost anywhere inside.
Being active and moving around the business is always a good idea. Greet everyone who comes in in a friendly manner. Robbers don’t like any attention being drawn to them. Be on alert for anyone who just “hangs” around your business with no real purpose or someone who comes and goes more than once in a day. Go with your “gut” if you feel like someone is acting suspicious and call law enforcement just to be on the safe side.
What if a robbery does occur? Are you prepared, do you have a plan regarding what you will do or how you will respond? Everyone should know what to do in case of a robbery. Use a hand signal or code word that will alert employees of trouble. If you keep a large amount of cash on hand you are asking for trouble. Keep minimal amounts of cash on hand. Develop a plan to make money drops at the bank at least once per day. The deposit times should be random and change regularly.
If you don’t currently have a security system and surveillance cameras you should definitely consider it. This is not an expense but an investment in both your personal and business security. Even if you don’t have a working alarm system, you can post signs and stickers that state that you do. This in itself is a great deterrent. Dummy surveillance cameras and systems cost just pennies on the dollar and look just like the real thing. Again by at least putting up dummy surveillance cameras you significantly decrease your chances of falling victim.
Small business owners are the heart beat of America. We take huge risks, we invest tons of money and capitol, we employ members of our community, and so many depend on us each and everyday. It is a sad reality that robbers and other criminals prey on small businesses. In less than an hour they can destroy everything we’ve worked for. Don’t let it happen to you. Our country is in the midst of one of the worst economic situations in our history. Millions of Americans have been laid off, still others cannot find jobs. The unemployment rate is approaching 10% and if you consider Americans who have stopped looking for jobs, the real unemployment rate is over 15%! The end results have led to significant increases in crime. Many are desperate and will do whatever is needed to provide for their family. Many of today’s criminals are first offenders and feel as if they don’t have a choice. The situation is a sad one, but nonetheless, your number one priority should be to provide a safe and secure environment for yourself and family.

A great way to add security to your home and property is to purchase a surveillance system. Advancements in technology have led to much more affordable systems. That being said, they still don’t come cheap. Many individuals, consumers and small business owners, are opting to go with “dummy” surveillance cameras. Dummy cameras do an excellent job of deterring criminals and crimes such as robbery, theft, and vandalism. Dummy cameras are non-working security cameras that look just like the real thing but at a fraction of the cost.
Most of these fake surveillance cameras include the blinking red LED light just like the real thing. Quality models even come with housing and fake power cables. Today’s dummy cameras are nearly exact replicas of real working surveillance units.
If you find yourself in a financial situation that will not allow you to purchase a surveillance system consider investing in dummy cameras as a low cost solution. You may even consider a dummy as a cheap way to add on to an existing surveillance system.
The truth is they will not catch a criminal on video, but statistics show that the presence of security camera will prevent a great deal of crimes. Protect your home and property for a small investment today.

The ability to defend yourself and your loved ones is paramount should trouble arise. Many individuals choose non-lethal self defense products. The reason…they are non-lethal, meaning they cause no permanent damage or long term injuries, but they get the job done quickly and efficiently. The most popular self defense products are pepper spray, Mace, stun guns and taser devices.
We live close to LSU and today I was driving by “the lakes”. Its a beautiful place just off campus with sidewalks and bike trails. It is a very popular exercise spot, especially when school is in. As I’m driving I watching as I pass all these people, young and old. Some are jogging, others are walking and still others are biking. I noticed that many were carrying keychain pepper spray and I spotted a few personal alarms. I also noted that many appeared to be carrying nothing at all and many were exercising alone.
What if you forgot your pepper spray today and find yourself jogging alone when trouble strikes? Would you be an easy victim or target for criminals. I often advocate learning to defend yourself against an attacker should the need arise. Many police and law enforcement officials offer some excellent classes. Some are even free of charge! If this sounds interesting to you then please contact your local police or sheriff’s department to see what they have to offer.
In many cases I’m told that those classes are intimidating. Others have time conflicts that prevent them from being able to attend. Whatever the reason, it’s no reason not to learn self defense. We offer 19 self defense fighting dvd’s that cover the gambit of fighting techniques. You will find anything from hand to hand combat, to karate, to mixed martial arts. All of these DVD’s are taught by some of the best fighters in the world. You keep to learn from them one on one in your home and on your time schedule. This is an option that works really well for many of today’s busy families. You will be impressed the skills you can attain in a relatively short period of time. If you are committed to watching the DVD’s and then practicing what you’ve learned; you will pick up high level self defense techniques that could literally save your life. So in addition to that pepper spray or stun baton, consider taking a class or buying a specialized DVD that will help you learn to defend yourself and increase your overall self confidence level and your peace of mind.

Unless you’ve been under a rock for the last few weeks surely you’ve heard of Jaycee Dugard. She was kidnapped as a young child while walking to catch a school bus. She’s was held as a sex slave by her captive, a pedophile named Phillip Garrido. Police made the discovery a few weeks ago at Garrido’s home. Soon the story was all over the news. This case made me physically ill; just the thought of having a daughter kidnapped and tortured for 18 years is too much.
Garrido was a Registered Sex Offender and subject to visits and questioning from parole officers over the years. On numerous occasions each year Garrido was visited by law enforcement. Never in the 18 years of visits did anyone stumble upon something that might raise suspicion? That in itself points to a system that is broken. It is a known fact that over 75% of pedophiles re-offend; that being the case wouldn’t you think officers would approach visits expecting to find problems. If 75 out of every 100 re-offend then I would be surprised to NOT find a problem. Does anyone really think these people can be treated or rehabilitated? In my opinion the answer is no.
I am regular visitor to the National Sex Offender Registry. The system gives users the ability to find out the offenses, addresses, and history of registered sex offenders. As a result of the system I know that we have 6 registered pedophiles within a 2 mile radius of our home. Enhancements to the system make it possible for you to put in an email address or phone number to determine if it is associated with a sex offender. If you notice that your child is communicating with someone you’re not familiar with, plug in the phone number they are calling from or the email address used. This is just another proactive tool to help you keep your children safe.
To be honest, as the father of young children I feel like my hands are tied in some senses. Because these pedophiles are allowed to live wherever they please, the residents are being held prisoner within the community they live in. If you have children and know that these “animals” are close by, you are certainly going to keep a tight leash on your kids to ensure there well being.
So what can we do within the community to raise awareness, while taking back our neighborhoods and creating the safe haven that our kids deserve. First, go to the National Sex Offender Registry http://www.familywatchdog.us/. Find out who they are and where they live. Make sure that everyone within your community is aware. Consider starting a neighborhood watch organization. Create newsletters, emails and web communication to get the word out. Follow some basic, common sense tips to ensure safety.
Common Sense Tips to Keep You Safe
Parents
- Always know where your children are.
- Put your children’s emergency identification (name, address, phone number) on their clothes.
- Teach your children your home phone number and to how call 911 if there is an emergency.
- Agree on a specific time when children must return home.
- Contact law enforcement authorities immediately if there is any suspicious or unlawful activity.
- Purchase and watch The Safe Side video with your children.
Children
- Always tell your parents where you are going.
- Never enter any home without getting your parent’s permission first.
- Never get into any vehicle, unless your parents know and have said it’s OK.
- Always wear reflective clothing at night.
- Never approach any house that is not well lit.
- Remember anything weird that an adult says or does to you and tell your parents immediately.
- Run away from people who offer you candy or other treats or want you to help look for their puppy or kitten.
- Scream, run and fight if anyone tries to grab you or make you to go with them.
- Don’t play in areas that you are unfamiliar with.
- Stay on well-lit streets and always use the sidewalk. If there is no sidewalk, always walk facing traffic.
Some communities are investing in surveillance systems to record activities within their neighborhoods. Most make sure to capture entry/exit ways. If a crime occurs chances are you will have video evidence to help law enforcement make an apprehension. The presence of surveillance equipment is a deterrent in itself. Parents and guardians should consider carrying some type of self defense product. You’ll have the means to protect yourself and family if necessary and the peace of mind knowing you can.

Not many people realize how often a home is burglarized or robbed in the US. Would you believe that every minute in the US a robbery is taking place. A forced entry home invasion nearly every five minutes! We live in a dangerous society with opportunistic criminals. Criminals are looking for the easy target and passive victim. There are inexpensive home protection products that make for extremely wise investments.
For about a dollar you can purchase window security decals. Just by placing these home security stickers on prominent windows and entry ways you send a message to would be criminals. In many cases the little things like decals that mean the difference. A criminal is likely to choose a home who they don’t think in protected.
A door brace will help fortify hinged doors as well as sliding glass doors. Made of 20 gauge steel a door brace could be the security device that prevents a home invasion or forced entry. Again, these are very simple, easy to use home security products and the cost in most cases is less than twenty dollars.
Consider a door stop alarm; you’ve seen these before, they are wedge shaped, you put under the door. If someone attempts entry it prevents entry and sounds a loud 130 decibel alarm. The alarm will get your attention while deterring further entry.
Simple wireless motion alarms can protect an entry way, or purchase one for each room in your home and have consistent protection. Motion triggers a high decibel alarm, some models allow you to pre-program telephone numbers into a keypad. When motion is detected the “autodialer” function will begin calling your pre-programmed numbers.
Magnetic window and door alarms are very simple and effective home security devices. These devices are two separate pieces. One part attaches to the door or window and the other portion mounts on or near the frame. When the door or window is closed the two parts come together. Upon opening the magnetic connection is broken which sounds the alarm.
The home protection products discussed above are some of many items available. The cost for these type of products is very inexpensive, with most being less than $20.00. If your home, town home, or apartment is not protected, I suggest making this a priority.

One of the single most important things you can do for your children is to protect them from the pedophiles and predators on the internet. Unfortunately, the same advances in technology and communication that have created web 2.0 and all of the social networking has also created a breeding ground for sexual predators. These very sick individuals are on the same popular internet medium that our children are on.
There are people (lots of them) that have but one intention and that is to sexually exploit children using the internet. Some of the people will prey on children who seem to lack attention, affection, or kindness. Gradually they will go from being friendly to attempting to sexually seduce their targets. To give you an idea of how sick these individuals are; many will devote countless hours to learning everything that is “in or popular ” for that age group. They will put forth there time, money and energy in attempts to have a sexual encounter with a child. They will attempt to become the child’s best friend, listening to their problems and consoling them. They will know the latest music trends, hobbies and interests of kids. They will set up fake MySpace and FaceBook accounts all in an attempt to fit in. These individuals attempt to gradually lower children’s inhibitions by slowly introducing sexual context and content into their conversations.
There is another group of predatators that immediately attempt to engage in sexual talk with children. Some have the primary goal of collecting pornographic images; others aggressively push for face to face meetings with their online contact. It is important to remember that computer-sex offenders can be of any age, race, or sex and they do not discriminate. There victims range from infants to young adults.
The information below was prepared by the FBI and further resources may be obtained through the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. This is great information and is a must read for all parents, grandparents and guardian’s.
What Kind of Signs Should Be Looked At As Indicators That Your Child Might Be At Risk On-line?
- Your child spends large amounts of time on-line, especially at night.
Statistics show that children who spend large amounts of unsupervised time on-line, especially in chat rooms are most likely to fall victim to a online sexual predator. So ask yourself how much time do your kids spend online? Do you know where they go and what they do? In many cases latchkey kids are more at risk, parents tell them to stay at home after school. To burn time they go online to chat or IM friends. l. In some cases these children will also go in search of sexually explicit information. Lets be honest, this age group is curious about sex and in a sort of exploratory phase. The pedophiles know this and they prey on these children.
The greatest risk to children is during the evening hours; the internet can be dangerous 24/7 but activity is much greater in the late evening hours. As a parent periodically check the computer for any new file downloads. Often times pornography is used in the victimization of children. It is common for sex offenders to supply potential victims with pornography; this is their attempt to open up discussions involving sex. It may also be used to attempt to show children that sex between them and an adult is OK or normal. may be used to show the child victim that sex between children and adults is “normal.” Again, search new files and downloads for strange activity.
- Your child receives phone calls from men you don’t know or is making calls, sometimes long distance, to numbers you don’t recognize.
Children may be hesitant to give out a phone number or contact information, but the predator is quick to do so. Be on the lookout for long distance calls that you don’t recognize. Check your caller-id regularly to make sure that you don’t see phone numbers that don’t ring a bell. In addition, look for things such as 800 numbers dialed or collect phone calls to numbers that look strange.
- Your child turns the computer monitor off or quickly changes the screen on the monitor when you come into the room.
How does your child react upon you surprising them at the computer. Does he quickly turn the computer monitor off or shield the screen. If so, this is a potential problem that needs your immediate attention.
A child looking at pornographic images or having sexually explicit conversations does not want you to see it on the screen.
- Your child is using an on-line account belonging to someone else.
Even if you don’t subscribe to an on-line service or Internet service, your child may meet an offender while on-line at a friend’s house or the library. Most computers come preloaded with on-line and/or Internet software. Computer-sex offenders will sometimes provide potential victims with a computer account for communications with them.
- What Should You Do If You Suspect Your Child Is Communicating With A Sexual Predator On-line?
You should communicate openly and honestly with your child about your concerns. Explain to them the dangers of communicating with offenders. Review and save anything you may find on your child’s computer; if you don’t know how to do this, confiscate the entire computer and hold it until someone can check it over.
Use caller id to determine who is calling your child or who he/she is contacting. There are services available on both the internet and phone that allow parents to block children from accessing certain types of sites or making phone calls. You can also have the phone company help you set up a caller reject feature to disallow calls from certain numbers.
Remember to regularly monitor your child’s online habits, this means all types of electronic communications including, chat, instant messages, email, social networks, etc. Computer-sex offenders almost always meet potential victims via chat rooms. After meeting a child on-line, they will continue to communicate electronically often via e-mail.
Consider investing a in hidden camera to capture what your child is doing when you are not around. This is for their benefit and safety. It could potentially save there life.
Should any of the following situations arise in your household, via the Internet or on-line service, you should immediately contact your local or state law enforcement agency, the FBI, and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

On Tuesday August 4th, the largest national community self defense and security event will take place in cities and towns across America. It is the 26th Annual National Night Out Against Crime. The event is promoted as “America’s Night Out Against Crime” and has really increased in popularity over the last few years.
So what is the National Night Out (NNO) all about? Well it takes place every year on one special night night a year. Communities across the nation unite against crime and drugs. The 2008 NNO involved participation from over 37 million people from around the world! The campaign included citizens, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood watch and other organizations and local officials from over 15,000 communities. All 50 states were represented, as well as all US. territories, military bases and even Canadian cities.
The NNO has the following objectives:
- Increase awareness related to crime and drug prevention.
- Provide support for local anti-crime programs and to generate increased participation.
- Improve neighborhood pride, ownership, and attitudes; build effective partnerships with police and law enforcement agencies.
- Send a clear message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are prepared, organized and ready to take a stand against crime and drugs.
More than ever before, individuals are concerned about their personal security and the safety of their homes and neighborhoods. On this night there are traditional displays such as outdoor lights and front porch vigils. In addition, many take part in larger gatherings that include:
- Block parties
- Cookouts
- Visits and presentations from police and sheriff’s departments
- Parades
- Youth programs
If you’ve not heard of NNO before, this is your opportunity to start a local program in your community. After all it’s one night per year, and the results are sure to have a lasting impact. You can learn all about the program, get free promotional materials, and contact information just click on the image above.
Remember, due to the recession we’re currently in this National Night Out may be more important than ever before. As all of our communities are resource challenged and fighting squeaky tight budgets; NNO organizers hope more people will analyze the value of the National Night Out closely. On a small annual budget, National Association of Town Watch (NATW), the sponsoring organization of National Night Out, has found ways to make huge strides in the fight against crime, without using tons of money. I challenge and encourage you to either start a program in your community or to join an existing NNO.

If you were faced with a personal safety emergency could you or would you be able to product yourself and loved ones? If so would you use physical self defense techniques such as street fighting or martial arts? Every 36 seconds someone is assaulted in the United States. A burglary is occurring every 14 seconds, while a theft takes place every 5 seconds.
To put it in perspective, buy the time I finished typing the sentence above at least one person or family was assaulted, two homes were robbed and at least 4 thefts took place! We live in the greatest country in America, but the truth is that crime and criminals are all around us. It is up to us to protect, educate and raise awareness in and around our communities.
So if you were getting out of your car in the mall parking lot and heading in to shop, then all of a sudden…could you or would you be ready and able to project yourself and loved ones. For the majority of us the truth to the answer is no. This doesn’t mean we are all a bunch of candy asses, it means that crimes such as assault, home invasion, robbery, theft, etc happen very quickly and most don’t have time to react.
How do can you change the end result? How can you increase the odds in your favor that you won’t become the next victim. The first thing you need to to is increase your awareness. It’s easy to do, doesn’t take any special skills and in most cases will deter a would be attacker. The next time you are out shopping, do some people watching. You will see the majority are not focused on whats going on around them. Most instead are talking on cell phones, listening to ipod’s, reading the newspaper or a book, anything but paying attention to what is going on right then and there.
That is awareness, and just by doing some people watching you can hone those awareness skills. When you are doing this you are very likely to make eye contact, this in itself is a great crime deterrent. In addition, you will stand out to most criminals as a tougher target. So remember awareness is the key! Practice it and live it everyday. Next, in most cases you don’t want to or can’t go toe to toe with these criminals. You have some very effective options, first you may choose to carry a handgun. If you think a handgun is right for you; it is a good idea to apply for a “concealed weapons permit”. You will be required to take and complete classes to ensure you understand the how to use your weapon and the responsibility, as well as potential consequences of gun ownership. I own a handgun and feel very comfortable using one, but would only do so if an attacker entered my home or business and threatened harm. In my opininon the potential consequences in other situations are just too dangerous for me.
You can choose a non-lethal self defense product such as pepper spray, Mace, stun guns, TASER devices, batons and many others. The immediate benefit is they will not kill but will disable or debilitate long enough to get to safety. Like anything else, the best product for you may not be for someone else. The most important thing is you determine what will work best for you. Next, learn how to use your self defense product, then practice and practice some more.
At Guardian Self Defense we welcome your questions and are happy to help you determine what is likely to work best for you. The easiest and quickest way to reach us is via our secure contact form or you can call us at (800) 928-8343

This morning I woke up and began calling local friends and family to make sure they were aware that police had released a sketch of a man wanted in a brutal rape last night. I’m on the phone with my wife reviewing basic safety and self defense, when I get word of a home invasion that left one person dead and another critically injured.
Local crime in the greater Baton Rouge area has increased nearly 50% versus this time last year. Even worse is that the increase in violent crime including murder is increasing at even greater rates. Why is this happening? What is causing this crime spike? What can we (the community) do to reverse the trend?
I don’t have all of the answers but am willing to do just about anything if it will make a difference. Less than 100 miles down the road is New Orleans which recently became the “murder capital” as per capita the city had the highest rate of murder in the country.
People are concerned, scared, mad, you name it and I think I’ve felt the emotion. As a resident trying to raise a family I don’t like what I see. I see that the majority of the crime seems to be drug related in one way or the other. I see the highest crime areas are also the lowest income areas. Education is lacking, family is lacking, role models are non existent; these things combined make for a vicious cycle that is very difficult to escape but extremely easy to fall victim to.
In the latest home invasion, a 38-year-old man who with another guy allegedly forced their way into a home after 2:00am last night in what is being called an armed robbery attempt. The 38 year old attacker was fatally shot by an 18 year old who was inside the home at the time of the invasion. The 18 year old was also critically wounded in what is believed to have been a shootout.
The two attackers attempted forced entry into the home for the purposes of robbing the 18 year old. The 18 year old quickly got his gun and began shooting. There will likely be more violence overnight tonight and potentially more casualties.
Self defense and security are now at the top most families priority list. Local gun shops report an unbelievable increase in the requests for concealed weapons permits. Our business, non-lethal self defense products is extremely busy. Individuals and small business owners are buying pepper spray, stun guns, home alarms, personal security products like never before. Others are installing cameras, both hidden surveillance cameras and domes in plain view.
So what is the answer, how do we get these criminals under control. First, I believe in community policing. We have to put large amounts of officers into our highest crime areas. It’s a no brainier that crime will decrease with increased police presence. The most important aspect of community policing is to build relationships. The great majority of people who live in high crime areas want the violence to stop and will help to do so. This type of policing brings community leaders and law enforcement together and typically spurs valuable awareness and prevention programs.
Once the law enforcement presence has become embedded, it’s time to root out the “cancer”. There will always be those who want to continue business as normal. These “thugs” must be dealt with and the consequences should be harsh. During this same time period, an education initiative should be embarked upon. Education can clear the way and “break the cycle” of crime, drugs, and poverty. Education will only be effective once those within the community feel safe and don’t fear retaliation from the criminals.
So you have your law enforcement embedded 24/7 in these areas, you are working with local leaders and organizations to provide the necessary programs and resources. Initiatives such as rebuilding and renovation as well as “clean up” type programs help to build morale and ownership of the community.
Now when education is introduced and reinforced it will be much more effective. Young men and women who choose to will now have a “fighting chance” to break the cycle.

We are in the midst of a terrible recession. Thousands are Americans are losing their jobs, homes, savings and self esteem. Putting politics to the side for this discussion; I ask you how did this happen in the United States of America? I don’t care what party affiliation you represent, the question is still the same, but the answers I keep hearing don’t address the questions posed. In fact, most answers are terribly inadequate to the point where I fear for the future of our country. The future as it relates to my children and grandchildren.
The reasons, in my opinion, for the demise of the American economy are a direct result of us losing sight of the principles and values that this country was founded on. Lets be honest the credit crisis is at the center of the recession. Greedy, unscrupulous, and powerful Americans saw an opportunity to make billions by offering back loaded sub prime loans to individuals who for the most part did not have the financial resources to own the home they were allowed to purchase. Again, I go back to the principles and values that America was founded on.
Some may argue that home ownership is the American dream and everyone should have the opportunity to own one. I say home ownership is a privilege not a right. When I purchased my first home a little more than five years ago, I had to produce detailed income records, my credit report was scrutinized, income to debt ratio was calculated and my credit score played a large role in the whole process. That process didn’t occur in the majority of the defaulted loans that have us in such a mess.
On September 11, 2001 all of our lives were turned upside down. I remember it just like it was yesterday. On that day all of our lives changed forever. On September 12, 2001 Americans of every race, faith, and political affiliation vowed that we would come together as a nation and never, ever forget. Sadly, I believe the majority of Americans have already forgotten. For nearly eight years now there has not been another terror attack on American soil. Some have come close, but we have remained safe. Today, Guantanamo is being closed and dangerous terrorists are being released.
What most people don’t understand or choose to ignore is that these terrorists have ONE goal. That goal is to kill Americans. That’s it…it’s what they live for. They train in terror camps to kill us and if they die trying they become “mortars”. How can we allow this to happen. Again, I point to the principles and values that our Founding Fathers used to build our great country.
Let me pose some questions and statements to you.
Do you believe in God? Is he the center of your life?
Is America a good place to live? The best country in the world?
Do you place a high importance on honesty and integrity?
My family is sacred to me?
If you break the law you pay the penalty. Justice is blind and no one is above it.
I have a right to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness and not a guarantee of equal results.
I work hard for what I have. I will share it with who I want to. Government cannot force me to be charitable.
It is not un-American for me to disagree or share my personal opinion.
The government works for me. I do not answer to them. They answer to me.
If you answered yes to most of the questions above and agree with most of the statements posed, then you stand for the same core principles that our country was founded on. It is time for you to step up and make your voices heard. Time to get our country back on track. I believe that the future success our our country depends on those same core principles!
I don’t care if you agree or disagree with the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, what’s important is that a generation of 18 – 25 year old kids have made the ultimate sacrifice to ensure the safety of our country. Thousands have been killed fighting for you and me. Hundreds of thousands are returning home after multiple tours with severe mental issues. Depression, traumatic stress disorders, and suicide to name a few. The facilities and resources to treat our heroes are either severely strained or non existent. All of these kids gave it their all for us, but now America is letting them down?
My father worked his tail off for thirty plus years and retired about four years ago with a nice and well deserved “net egg”. This was acquired through hard work, sacrifice, savings all in preparation for the “golden years”. Well in the last 6 months my dad has seen that “nest egg” lose over a third of its total value. He is not alone, millions are in the same situation. What are they to do? We are spending trillions on bank bailouts, automotive bailouts, and stimulus packages, none of which seem to be working as of yet. But what about the little guy, the regular everyday “Joe” who has lost everything they’ve worked so hard for. Do they get a bailout? Is someone going to provide them with a stimulus plan? I think not, and it all goes back to those principles.
God is being excluded in our schools, in city, state and federal government. What happened to “In God We Trust”? Laws and legislation are are eroding religion and church. Instead, evolution is being taught to many of our youngsters without opposition.
The unemployment rate in the US is approaching 10% and that does not include those people who have been unemployed for more than six months and have basically given up! History tells us that during a recession, and times of high unemployment that crime rates increase. This makes sense because people are desperate. Families still need to buy groceries, pay rent, get medicine, pay a car note, etc. At some point the money runs out. In many cases these circumstances can lead many to turn to crime as a way to try and make ends meet.
By no means do I claim to have all the answers, but I firmly believe that we have lost track of the big picture. We have taken our eye off the ball, we no longer allow the values that this great country was founded on to guide us. We have to get back to this. It is the only way to turn this thing around. It is the only way to revive America.

Fact: Two of the deadliest Mexican drug cartels now have a combined combat force of over 100,000 soldiers according to the US Defense Department. These dangerous have wreaked havoc throughout Mexico for decades. The growth and power of the drug cartels now have them crossing into US border states and committing horrific crimes including kidnapping for ransom and murder!
Reports claim over 7,000 people killings at the hands of the cartels last year — more than 1,000 in January alone. Murders often involve beheading or bodies dissolved in vats of acid. The shear numbers of the cartels now rival that of the Mexican army and have reached crisis proportion in Mexico. The threat to the US, especially border towns is increasing daily.
The two most dangerous cartels are the Sinaloa cartel, nicknamed the “Federation” or “Golden Triangle” by law enforcement agencies, and “Los Zetas” (the Gulf Cartel). They have been growing and are reportedly discussing a truce or merger to better withstand government forces, The Times reported.
These cartels are wealthy and able to invest large amounts of money in weapons and technology. As a result they are armed with only the best. Their arsenal includes semi-automatic rifles, rocket-propelled grenades, dynamite, assault rifles, bullet proof vests, and .50 caliber sniper rifles.
The drug-related murder rate in Mexico doubled in 2008 from just one year before, and as the violence escalates, the power of the drug cartels has destabilized Mexican authority to the point of threatening national security. The Mexican army is the only force fighting the cartels. Police are largely corrupted by the cartel bribes. If the police don’t except the bribes they are usually killed. The cartels now control whole territories in Mexico and they are looking to move west.
There has been a rash of crime as a direct result of these cartels. Though most appear to be criminal on criminal killings, abductions and murders; numerous crimes have been committed against innocent US residents. This trend is expected to steadily increase as the cartels recruit and train more members.
The Defense Department states that these criminal cartels have already established HUBS in the US in which they are currently operating. As there presence increase the violent crime where they reside is also likely to spike.

If you are like me you probably have thousands of dollars in valuables at your home on any given day. What if someone broke into your home tomorrow while you were at work or away on business. How would you fare? Do you leave expensive jewelry sitting in the bathroom or in a jewelry box in plain sight? Do you leave cash laying on your dresser or in the laundry room?
Most households make for a very nice payday and criminals definitely know this. They know where to look and what to look for. The objective is to get in and out quickly. In fact experts claim that most burglars spend less than eight minutes in a home. They get in and out grabbing things that are obvious and valuable.
A diversion safe could save you thousands of dollars should become a victim of a robbery. Many of you are saying, “What is a diversion safe?” Some call them hidden safes and they look and feel exactly like common household items such as soda cans, bathroom cleaners, spray starch, beer, etc. The difference is they have hidden compartments in them which will allow you to store your valuables. Some areas are large than others depending on the individual safe, but all are perfect for small items like rings, earrings, chains, necklaces, bracelets, and cash.

Hidden safes are inexpensive and come in a variety of models, some of the newest additions are Kibbles n Bits dog food and Miller Beer cans. A small investment know could save you thousands down the road. Trust me hidden safes make sense! If you would like more information on diversion safes. Home Invasion
One of the most frightening and dangerous crimes that can occur to a family is a home invasion robbery. Home invasions are when the robbers or attackers use forced entry to gain access to an occupied home, apartment, hotel room, or trailer to commit robbery or other crimes.
Home invasions as well as car jacking are on the rise. This is an especially scary trend because both crimes violate a persons private space and the places that we believe to be our sanctuary.
Why are the prevalence of these crimes on the rise? The fact is that small businesses like convenience stores and fast food establishments have upgraded their security. They can afford to setup high tech surveillance systems, hire guards or policemen, and with time lock safes they have limited the amount of cash available to criminals.
As a result, the criminals are now focused on residential crimes because homes are a much easier target. As much as we want to believe that our homes are safe, the fact is they are rarely as safe as we think!
The Profile of a Criminal
Residential burglars work mostly during the day and when a residence is more likely to be unoccupied. Most burglars work alone and tend to probe a neighborhood looking for the right residence and the right opportunity. Alarm signs and decals, bars on windows, strong locks and doors, big dogs, and alert neighbors can sometimes deter burglars. Also, burglars will avoid a confrontation and will usually flee when approached. Most burglaries do not result in violence unless the criminal is cornered and uses force to escape.
Home invasion robbers, in contrast, work more often at night and on weekends when homes are more likely to be occupied. The home invader will sometimes target the resident as well as the dwelling. The selection process may include a woman living alone, a wealthy senior citizen or a known drug dealer, for example. It is not unheard of for a robber to follow you home based on the value of the car you are driving or the jewelry you are wearing. Some home invaders might have been in your home before as a delivery person, installer or repair vendor. Home robbers rarely work alone and rely on an overwhelming physical confrontation to gain initial control and instill fear in you. The greatest violence usually occurs during the initial sixty seconds of the confrontation and home invaders often come prepared with handcuffs, rope, duct tape, and firearms. Some in-home robbers appear to enjoy the intimidation, domination, and violence and some even claim it’s a “rush.”
Home invaders know that they won’t have to overcome alarm systems when the home is occupied or be worried about video cameras and silent alarms. Unlike robbing a retail store, home invaders expect privacy once inside your home and won’t have to deal with the police suddenly driving up or customers walking in. Once the offenders take control of a residence they can force the occupants to open safes, locate hidden valuables, supply keys to the family car, and PIN numbers to their ATM cards. Home invaders will try to increase their escape time by disabling the phones and sometimes will leave their victims bound or incapacitated. It is not unheard of for robbers to load up the victim’s car with valuables and drive away without anyone in the neighborhood taking notice.
Home invaders will sometimes use a ruse or impersonation to get you to open the door. They have been known to pretend to be delivering a package, flowers or lie about an accident like hitting your parked car. Once the door is opened for them, the home invaders will use an explosive amount of force and threats to gain control of the home and produce fear in the victims. Once the occupants are under control the robbers will begin to collect your valuables.
Some home robbers have been known to spend hours ransacking a residence while the homeowners are bound nearby watching in terror. Some robbers have been known to eat meals, watch TV, or even take a nap. A major fear is that the robbers might commit more violence like sexual assault or even murder. Some robbers have kidnapped and forced a victim to withdraw cash from their ATM machine or take them to their small business to rob it as well.
The same tactics used to prevent daytime burglaries will go a long way to preventing forced entry home robberies. If you can delay a home invader at the point of entry then you have a chance of deterring them or have time to call the police. A solid core door, strong locks with reinforced strike plates, and reinforced window devices will stop most forced entries. In addition home alarms are a burglars worst enemy, because it catches them by surprise and exposes their presence with ear piercing alarms. Some of the most popular and inexpensive home security alarms are door stop alarms, window alarms, barking dog alarms, and auto dialer alarms.
Other self defense weapons to consider are pepper spray and stun guns. Pepper spray is extremely effective at stopping would be attackers and the price is very affordable. Stun guns are easy to operate and come in models that are disguised as cell phones, pens, or a blackberry. This gives you a tactical advantage and the element of surprise.
Remember these important security steps:
* Install solid core doors, heavy duty locks, and window security devices
* Lock all doors, windows, and garages at all times
* Use four three-inch screws to secure heavy duty lock strike plates in the door frame
* Use the door peephole BEFORE opening the door
* Use your porch light to help you to see clearly outside
* Never rely on a chain-latch as a barrier to partially open the door
* Never open the door to strangers or solicitors
* Call the police if the stranger acts suspicious
* Alert your neighbors to suspicious solicitors
* Hold a family meeting to discuss home security plans
* Set the home perimeter alarm at night, if you have one
Be safe.
