Your personal safety and well being are more important than ever before. Crime seems to be closing in all around us. It does not discriminate and you can’t hide from it. You can reduce your chances and the liklihood of becoming a victim by following the personal safety tips below.

A woman has about a 1 in 6 chance of being sexually assaulted at some point in her lifetime. The chances of being robbed or assaulted in the U.S., on average, are about the same. If you have not made your personal security a priority it is certainly time to to so. Below are some common personal safety tips that go a long way toward making you a difficult crime target.

Personal Safety Tips

Stay alert and tuned in to your surroundings, wherever you are. Don’t be taken by surprise. Be aware and be prepared.

Stand tall and walk confidently. Don’t show fear. Don’t look like a victim.

Trust you instincts. If you feel uncomfortable in a place or situation, leave right away and get help if necessary.

Carry a non-lethal self defense product such as self defense pepper spray or a self defense taser. Learn how to use and what to expect.

On Foot

Choose busy streets and avoid going through vacant lots, alleys, or other deserted areas. At night, walk in well-lighted areas whenever possible.

Try not to walk or jog alone. Take a friend or neighbor along for company.

Get to know the neighborhoods and neighbors where you live and work.

Carry your purse close to your body and keep a firm grip on it. Avoid pickpockets by carrying your wallet in an inside coat pocket or front trouser pocket.

In Your Car

Always lock your car and take the keys, even if you’ll be gone only a short time.

Keep your car in good running condition, and keep the tank at least quarters full; lock doors while driving.

If your car breaks down, raise the hood and place emergency reflectors or flares. Then stay in the locked car. When someone stops to help, don’t get out. Ask him or her, through a closed or cracked window, to telephone the police to come and help.

If you’re coming or going after dark, park in a well-lighted area that will still be well lighted when you return.

Be especially alert when using enclosed parking garages. Don’t walk into an area if you feel uncomfortable.

Leave only you ignition key with a parking attendant. Don’t leave your house key, garage door opener, or other important items in your car.

      Never pick up hitchhikers.

Control your keys. Never leave an identification tag on your key ring. If your keys are lost or stolen, it could help a thief locate your car and burglarize your home.

If carrying packages or valuable items, store them in your trunk if possible. If you do leave packages, clothing or other articles in the car; make sure they are out of sight.

Keep your car’s Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and a complete description in a safe place at home. Since 1969, the federal government has required manufactures to engrave a unique number, the VIN, on all passenger cars in one visible and several hidden locations. One VIN is engraved on a metal plate on the dashboard near the windshield. VIN’s of stolen cars are registered with the FBI’s National Crime Information Center.

License plates frequently are stolen from cars used in other crimes. Get in the habit of checking your plates when you drive. A few drops of solder on the bolts or blurring the threads can help safeguard your plates.

Keep the following information in a sale location.

    *   Year; Make; Model
*  Color;
*   Id# or VIN
*  License #
*  Identifying Marks;
* Insurance Co.; and policy #

When using Public Transportation

When using the bus, be sure to have your fare out and ready before you leave home, office or store.

Plan your route to use the busiest, best-lighted stop possible, both to get on and off a bus. If you must wait, stay near the attendant’s stand or in the best-lighted area available.

Keep your purse, shopping bag, backpack, packages, etc., in your lap, on your arm, or between your feet – not by themselves on an empty seat.

Sit near the driver, but not right next to the door.

Don’t let yourself doze off on a bus. It can make you an easy target.

ATM Machine

Try to plan your visits to automatic teller during the day, rather than after dark.

Choose an ATM location that is in a busy public place. Avoid making withdrawals in isolated areas.

If at all possible, take along a friend who can watch the surroundings while you are conducting your transactions.

Pre-plan your transaction carefully, and don’t spend too much time at the machine.

When you make a withdrawal, quickly place the money in your purse or wallet and leave as soon as you finish your transaction.

Watch out for suspicious-looking people waiting around an ATM – they may not really be customers. If someone offers to let you go ahead of them, decline politely and leave.

When visiting a drive-through ATM, keep your doors locked and be prepared to drive away quickly. If anyone approaches your car on foot, roll up your window and drive off.

If you have not finished your transaction, and you are approached by a suspicious character, press the CANCEL button, receive your card and leave quickly.

Having heard of crime in the surrounding area of the college thier daughter had selected, the couple asked their daughter to consider going to school at a college in a town only a two hour drive from the family’s home. With her this close they could check on her whenever they liked and she could come home anytime she got ready.

They thought they had done everything to get their beautiful, outgoing, daughter prepared for the wonderful experience of college life. She was so excited to be on her own.

But there was something they didn’t know about the school they had selected. There was a secret about the school that was not revealed in the colorful brochures that that the family had received. It wasn’t part of the information packet the student was handed when she enrolled. Yet, the school had been aware of it.

There were documented reports of over 38 attacks at the campus and surrounding areas in the three years prior to her registration. This information was not made available to the students. Had she or her family been aware of these altercations, she would not have enrolled in the school.

Then one early Spring day, in the wee hours of the morning, this young girl was attacked while she slept. She was raped and sodomized in her dorm room, because neither she nor her family had all the facts about the crime on campus.

The intruder, a known drug and alcohol abuser, was a student at the same university. He entered her unlocked dorm room undetected, after passing through two other unlocked doors, one of which was the exterior door of the building.

After this brutal attack, the University stepped up and became the first to begin documenting and publishing violent crime statistics for their campus and surrounding areas. Today, all colleges are required to make timely warnings about crimes that pose an ongoing threat to students and faculty.

Your college student will be exposed to a whole new way of life the moment he or she steps onto campus. For many kids this is their first taste of freedom.

While this should be a time of learning and emerging into adulthood, the plain fact is college can be a dangerous place. There are people who actually stalk college students waiting on a chance to do them harm. Robberies, theft, sexual assaults are all crimes that affect the campuses and surrounding areas of college.

To keep your student from becoming a victim, send them off with these life saving tools to keep them safe.

Portable Door Alarms: Easy to install and remove. These inexpensive devices have an audible alarm that registers 120 decibels.

Pepper Spray: This is a must have for every college student, especially young ladies. Make sure they have a pepper spray at all times, use the handy 1/2 ounce Pepper Spray with Visor Clip when in the car, take the Pepper Spray with Keychain when going to class or other places on campus, and ladies can always carry the Lipstick Pepper Spray almost anywhere.

Electronic Whistle: Compact and lightweight, a whistle gets attention.

The popularity of personal security alarms is skyrocketing largely because of technology enhancements, their ease of use, and the fact that they will not cause harm to others. Everyone is aware of pepper spray, stun guns and even air tasers; but when discussing the topic of self defense products a growing consumer following are requesting personal security alarms.

A personal alarm is typically a very small and practical electronic device that sounds a loud high decibel alarm with the push of a button Personal security alarms are lightweight, easy to operate and can be taken just about anywhere. If the user feels his or her safety may be compromised they can activate the alarm to summon help.

Experts agree that one of the most effective ways to deter and even prevent crime is to draw attention by making noise. It is often recommended that in an emergency situation one should “Yell Fire”. The personal alarm is made with this very idea in mind. At up to 130 decibels a little personal alarm will get the attention you need in any crisis.

Personal alarms have become favorites among the elderly and young to middle aged females. Most buy a personal alarm to supplement their personal security and may use as there first line of defense. As a second line or backup they may carry pepper spray or a stun gun.

Suppose you just left the mall and are walking in the parking lot to your car. You notice someone walking toward you a very fast pace. At about 15 feet you push the button to activate your 130 decibel alarm; the would be attacker is momentarily startled and then he runs away. On lookers come to your aid and contact the police. This is just one example of how a personal alarm could be utilized.

Criminals don’t like attention, the main function of an alarm is to draw attention. In many cases the personal alarm will be all that is needed to deter a would be assailant. Some criminals are very determined and the personal alarm alone may not be enough to thwart an attack. This is why we say a personal security alarm is a “supplemental” self defense product. Our recommendation is to always have and be ready and willing to use a less lethal product like pepper spray. A good self defense spray can stop even the most determined and aggressive individuals. The combination of these two devices can be extremely effective for self defense.

What is Pepper Spray?

Pepper Spray is an aerosol spray used for self-defense and personal protection. Pepper Spray is a self defense spray that consists of a concentrated agent injected into a pressurized canister and dispersed, or sprayed, by aerosol. The concentrated or active agent is Oleoresin Capsicum. Oleoresin Capsicum is a derivative of various hot pepper plants and is the chemical that gives peppers their hot quality. For this reason defense sprays are often called pepper sprays. Also, Oleoresin Capsicum is known as “OC” for short. That is why pepper spray is commonly referred to as OC pepper spray.

What is Mace?

Over the last several years the popularity of self defense sprays, mistakenly called Mace, has grown considerably. Just as many people mistakenly refer to soft drinks or cold drinks as “Coke” or refer to a photocopy as a “Xerox,” many people refer to defense sprays as “Mace.” Mace is a brand marketed by Mace Security International (MSI). MSI originally marketed a particular tear gas self defense spray. Today, Mace brand defense sprays either contain OC pepper, tear gas or both. Guardian Self Defense carries a huge selection of Mace defensive sprays.

The Physical Effects of Pepper Spray

Pepper Spray has four physiological effects that may be experienced:

   1. Eyes – tearing, involuntary closing or complete closing due to dilation of the eye capillaries. Eyes will appear red/bloodshot for 30 to 60 minutes. People wearing eyeglasses or contact lenses will be equally affected.
2. Respiratory System – immediate inflammation, including swelling of the throat lining which can restrict the airway size. Respiratory functions return to normal within 10 to 45 minutes. The airway will be open enough to allow for sufficient oxygen flow for survival. Due to the reduced airway flow, the person will probably not receive enough oxygen to continue fighting or other sustained physical exertion. Temporary paralysis of the larynx. Uncontrollable coughing, retching, and gasping for air with a gagging sensation in the throat.
3. Effect on the skin: inflammation of the exposed skin with a burning sensation.
4. Effects on muscle coordination: pepper spray exposure may cause a person to lose balance due to the effect of pepper spray on vision.

Now more than ever I believe non lethal self defense is the way to go when considering how to protect your personal security. Let me give you a real world example that shows you why I feel this way. Just last week in Syracuse, NY a grand jury returned an indictment of second degree murder against a man attempting to defend himself and wife in a foiled mugging attempt.

Upon returning home Jeffery Peterson and his wife were confronted by an an armed gun man. Peterson ended up in a physical struggle with the mugger in which he attempted to get the gun away from his attacker. The confortation ended when two gun shots killed the mugger.

Now a good, honest and hard working man is facing a second degree murder charge for protecting himself and his wife from an attempted mugging. Investigators and the prosecution claim that Peterson crossed the self defense line when he shot the attacker a second time.

Things can happen so fast, with little or no time to think about the potential consequences. In Mr. Peterson’s case, I’m sure his adrenaline was pumping and he was forced into a situation where he was literally fighting for his life. Though, I feel Mr. Peterson did nothing wrong, when gunshots rang out he placed his life in the hands of a jury.

Non lethal or less than lethal self defense products are effective almost immediately yet they cause no long term damage. Pepper spray sprayed into the attackers face could have defused this situation quickly. Technology advancements now you to choose non lethal products such as tasers, stun guns or pepper spray, instead of the potentially lethal hand gun.

Peterson, now sits in a jail cell without the possiblity of bail while he waits for his day in court. The situation is tragic and my heart goes out to him. Anyone considering carrying a gun for self defense, think again. The stakes are just too high, choose a less than lethal option instead.

Everyone knows famous zookeeper and television personality Jack Hanna. What you probablly didn’t know is that he carries pepper spray religiously for self defense against both humans and animals. While hiking Saturday in Glacier National Park a small bear weighing about 125 pounds came charging toward the famous zookeeper. TV host and zookeeper Jack Hanna says he took his own advice and used pepper spray on a grizzly bear headed toward him.

Hanna reports discharging his pepper spray canister first, at about 30 feet. The hope was that the wind would help carry it and deter the bear. Well that didn’t happen and the bear kept coming forward. At about 20 feet he sprayed again but the bear continued to move toward him. Finally, as the bear got within 10 feet Hanna was able to spray and hit him right in the face. The bear turned and fled in the opposite direction!

Most pepper spray products are not made to be effective at 30 feet. Most two or four ounce cannisters have a range of up to 18 feet. Bear spray, however is made to be effective at upwards of 30 feet. Hanna has been carrying pepper spray for over 15 years and this was the first time he’d ever had to use it.

Imagine what would could have happened had he not had the pepper spray? It appears they surprised a mother bear and her cubs. “We thought of letting them go by, but the trail was cut into the rock and was too narrow,” Hanna said. “So I said, ‘Everybody talk loud and we’ll back up until we can get off the trail.’” Hanna told everyone to crawl up the hill and put their backs against the wall. They all stood quietly and still while the mother and one cub passed them. The second cub decided to charge them.

Whether hiking, biking, running, or walking you just never know when a dangerous situation will present itself. Preparation today could indeed save your life tomorrow.

The father of a 17 year old French Valley, California girl went ballistic after seeing an explicit picture sent to his daughter by a 23 year old man. Shortly after receiving a picture of a mans genitals on her cell phone, the teen informed her father who took matters into his own hands.

The father did report the incident to local authorities, but what happened next has him in some hot water. The father contacted the youth to set up an apparent meeting between the two to discuss the inappropriate photo. The father greeted the 23 year old outside of their home by firing a shotgun in the air and ordering him out of the vehicle. He then threw the young man to the ground and pulled him by his feet into a back yard garage.

Inside the garage, the young man was forced to strip down to his boxers and had his limbs bound with zip ties. Over the course of about an hour the father proceeded to verbally and physically assault the man. The victim alleged that he was shocked over and over again by a stun gun. He claims the stun gun shocked him multiple times in the shoulder area.

After about an hour of torture the father contacted the locals sheriffs department. The responding deputies claimed the victim appeared to be extremely scared of something. He refused to speak and would not even open his eyes for several minutes.

As the father of a young girl, its hard for me to find fault with the fathers actions, even though things appear to have gotten out of hand. We want to be able to protect our girls and demand that others treat them with respect. I would have hoped that cooler heads would have prevailed, but I do take comfort in the fact that the father decided to use a less than lethal weapon in a stun gun rather than a handgun or knife.

Rachel Wade stabbed and killed Sarah Ludemann about a year ago, the apparent result of a love triangle gone bad. Wade and Lundemann’s were both involved with the same man Josh Camacho. Love and jealousy escalated into threats on both sides then finally a fight that turned deadly.

Wade is facing second degree murder and a potential life sentence if convicted. She is claiming self defense and said the stabbing was not intentional but the result of her trying to protect herself. Wade says after receiving threating phone calls from both Camacho and Ludemann she grabbed a kitchen knife put it into her purse and went to a friends place for safety.

Later that night Ludemann and two other females confronted Wade after tailing her vehicle. Wade got out with the knife and claims that Ludemann charged at her. In her attempt to defend herself she fatally stabbed Lundemann’s.

After reviewing the facts of this case thus far, if I was a jury member I would have to acquit Ms. Wad as the evidence suggests that though her intentions were indeed to prevent herself from harm. I can’t help but think about how things would have turned out had she chosen a less than lethal weapon to defend herself.

Right, wrong or indifferent, when you pick up a knife or gun in self defense the end result is often tragedy. In this case one young lady is dead and another finds her life in the hands of a grand jury. Had Wade chosen a less than lethal option like a stun gun or pepper spray things would have likely been much different today.

Legal for self defense in the majority of states, a small canister of pepper spray would have stopped the attack that took place, without causing permanent injury to anyone and allowing the victim to get to safety. Stun guns work the same way, a 2 to 3 second jolt could have taken the fight right out of the attacker.

Again, I believe that Ms. Wade acted in self defense and should be acquitted of the second degree murder charge. I do hope to raise the awareness among those in similar situations. In most cases, especially domestic incidents where love and emotions run high, the decision to pick up a gun or knife in self defense is wrong. Take a moment and consider both the consequences as well as alternative options. Less than lethal makes sense and just may save your life.

The popularity of stun guns as effective self defense weapons are at all time highs. This is largely because of technology. Enhancements in technology have created stun guns that are reliable, effective and affordable. The only thing standing in the way of everyone owning them are applicable laws.

Are stun guns legal for self defense? In most states, the answer is yes, in fact in 42 states stun guns are legal non lethal self defense products.

The following states have restrictions on the use of stun devices: Hawaii, New York, Massachusetts, Michigan, Illinois, New Jersey, Rhode Island, and Wisconsin. We don’t agree with the laws, in fact the laws violate the Second Amendment. Nevertheless, stun guns cannot be shipped to or used legally in the states above.

Hawaiian law states that it is unlawful for any person to have in their possession an “electric gun”. Law enforcement will confiscate and dispose of any “electric gun”. There is no mention of criminal charges associated with the possession of stun guns in Hawaii.

Massachusetts law states that “No person shall sell, offer for sale or possess a portable device or weapon from which an electric current, impulse, wave or beam may be directed, which current, impulse, wave or beam is designed to incapacitate temporarily, injure or kill.” The penalty for anyone caught in violation is punishment by fine of up to $1000 and/or imprisonment of up to six months.

In Michigan, possession of stun guns is a felony offense, though the criminal punishment is not detailed. Stun guns cannot be sold or possessed within the state of Michigan. Wisconsin law makes stun gun possession a Class E felony, likewise the punishment is not described.

In the states of New York and New Jersey, stun gun possession is classified as a fourth degree offense by any person, including a law enforcement officer. The punishment is up to 18 months in prison and/or a $7500 fine.

In the state of Rhode Island stun guns are prohibited. Any person found guilty of violating this law is subject to a fine of up to $500 and/or imprisonment for up to one year. In all cases the weapon will be confiscated.

Please note that we do not intend this to be an all inclusive list. Stun gun laws are ultimately the users responsibility not ours. Prior to purchasing a stun gun or stun device we recommend checking local laws.

Is it legal to carry pepper spray or mace? Believe it or not pepper spray and mace are legal for self defense and personal security purposes in all U.S. states. New York, Massachusetts, and Michigan have specific restrictions that must be followed in order for users to be lawful.

Residents of New York state must purchase all defense spray from a licensed firearm dealer or licensed Pharmacist from within the state of New York. Unfortunately, this means it is unlawful to purchase pepper spray products from anyone outside of the state. So if you live in New York find a licensed dealer. Before you can purchase your defense spray you will be asked to sign a form that affirms you are 18 years of age or older and have no felony convictions. Residents are limited to 2 canisters of pepper spray per transaction.

Massachusetts does not allow consumers to recieve pepper spray or mace by mail. All residents must purchase from a licensed firearm dealer from within the state. Residents of Massachusetts do not have to sign for their pepper spray products, so they are on the honor system. As a result, many consumers purchase defense sprays online and have them shipped to an address outside of the state.

Ironically, both New York and Massachusetts put no restrictions on the sale of bear spray and dog repellent even though the active ingredients are often the same. Some bear sprays are more potent and powerful than the human version. With no restictions on the animal version, many consumers living in New York or Massachusetts purchase online for their personal self defense.

The state of Michigan limits the concentration of pepper spray to 2% OC (oleoresin capsicum). A 2% concentration of CS tear gas is also legal. Pepper spray and tear gas cannot be combined. This law was undoubtedly established by someone with no knowledge of pepper spray products as the percent concentration of OC does not necessarily correlate to hottness or potency. For example, we sell a 10% OC pepper spray concentration that is rated at 2 million SHU’s, (scoville heat units are the industry accepted measure of hotness) which is illegal in Michigan. We also sell a 2% concentration that has a 5.3 million scoville heat unit rating and is legal. Michigan residents are limited to 35 grams of spray per person.

There are cities, towns, and counties who have specific restrictions regarding the use of a self defense spray like mace or pepper spray. It is advisable that you check with local law enforcement to ensure you are following all applicable laws.

Have you or someone you know been the victim of a stalker? Odds are good that you have an acquaintance who is being victimized by a stalker. Over 3.4 million people each year in the US find themselves the victim of stalking. The bottom line is that stalking is a very serious and potentially dangerous crime. Women are over three times more likely to be victims.

Stalking by definition are actions that scare you or make you feel danger. Stalkers don’t fit a criminal profile. Sometimes a stalker can be someone you met a work, other times they could be someone you dated, or you may not know them at all.

Stalkers are consistent about lots of their actions. Here are some common actions to become aware of:

Calls you over and over, may call and then hang up.

Shows up unexpectedly wherever you are.

Sends unwanted gifts, letters, cards, or e-mails.

Causes property damage to your home or car.

Keeps tabs on your internet and phone use.

Threaten you or loved ones with physical harm.

First things first, if you feel or sense immediate danger call 911 immediately for help. When it comes to stalking and staying safe, go with your instincts. If a situation doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t. Protect yourself with a good pepper spray, mace or stun gun. These types of self defense products can be extremely effective in a dangerous situation.

It is wise to contact a professional crisis hotline. Many domestic violence or victims services agencies are specifically trained to help you handle a stalker situation. Many will talk to you about the laws, help you complete a safety plan and put you in touch with other resources.

A good safety plan includes implementing the buddy system. It is important not to be alone. Whenever possible arrange to have a trusted friend or family member with you. Have a safe and confidential place to stay if necessary. Know what you will do if the stalker shows up unexpectedly.

Communicate with people who can help you. Your friends and family should know what’s going on. Someone should always know where your going and how long you expect to be gone. If the stalker is someone you know then firmly tell them to stop. Don’t wait for an answer or response. From that point forward all communication with the stalker should stop.

Consider filing a protection order with your local police department. Keep records and potential evidence of the stalking, including when and where a stalker contacts your or follows you. Hold on to emails, voice messages, text messages, etc.

With so many companies marketing numerous brands of self defense sprays, how do I choose the right pepper spray or mace for my situation. Lets break it down first by trusted brands and then by spray type or pattern.

There are a handfull of brands that law enforcement professionals use and trust. Fox Labs, Sabre, Defense Technology, Wildfire, Pepper Shot, and Mace are tested and proven. These are the pepper spray brands that have been used successfuly for decades. So when you purchase pepper spray it should be one of the ones listed above.

Pepper spray features different formulas and spray patterns for specialized uses. Focus on foggers, streams, foams and gels, together these can account for nearly all potential self defense uses.

Foggers are the most popular spray pattern for good reason. A fogger produces a cone shaped discharge, with the main advantage being no need to aim or be accurate. The fogger discharges in a “cloud” so users don’t have to worry about accurracy. Crowd control situations or dealing with more than one attacker are ideal for use of a fogger style pepper spray. Typically, you won’t find a keychain pepper spray fogger, these start with 2 ounce duty style units. The drawback to using foggers is the potential for “blowback” if sprayed into a stiff wind. The fogger is the best choice for use outdoors in low wind climates.

A stream, often referred to as a ballistic stream offers more range than a fogger. Chances of “blowback” are all but eliminated. The trade-off is accuracy. With a ballistic stream, practice and preparation are imperative. The stream comes out hard and fast; so to be effective a user needs to spray an attacker in the face. The last place you what to practice is during a violent situation. Spend a few minutes now to practice with your pepper spray. A ballistic stream is an excellent choice if you live in a windy climate, or if you require extended range.

A foam concentration has many benefits including, less fumes, secure indoors, sticks to an assailant, and Will not blowback. The range on a foam spray is comparable to that of a fogger. Again, you need to be accuarate with a foam. It is ideal for indoor or close quarters self defense when you need to reduce the risk of cross-contamination. A foam doesn’t splatter, so if your dealing with multiple individuals all in close proximity of each other, you can spray one individual without contaminating the others.

A gel formulation offers increased range, a sticky concentration that is nearly impossible to remove and it’s great for use where cross-contamination is a concern. The gel is ideal if you need extended range in an indoor or close quarter situation.

She works very long hours, often leaving home before the sun comes up and not returning until after dark. She’s a very driven young women who works two jobs to make ends meet. For her, time is at a premium so the last thing on her mind is home and personal security. Unfortunately the bad guys know this.
Just like most days, she arrived at her first job by 6:00 am and finished up the work day at job two around 8:00pm. She pulled into her dark driveway a little before 8:30pm, well after dark. She put the car in park, turned the key off and gathered her purse. As she exited her car and made her way to the front door, a man appeared from behind the brush. He quickly forced her into the house and then into the bedroom.

Just has he demanded that she remove her clothes, she quickly reached into her purse, grabbing her personal pepper spray. She sprayed the attacker in the face with the pepper spray and he immediately fell to the ground. The pepper spray temporarily blinded him. The effects on his respiratory system left him struggling for air, which took the fight right out of him.

The woman was able to safely run to a neighbors home and contact police. The police responded within minutes and apprehended the subject. Ironically, the pepper spray was a gift from her grandmother who was concerned for about safety. Without the pepper spray she would have probably been raped or maybe even worse.

One of the most important things you can do for yourself and family is to be proactive when it comes to personal and home security. There were over 1.3 million violent crimes in the U.S. last year. That is an average of over 3,500 per day!

As Americans, we work so hard to make it. Some of us work multiple jobs, others spend years in higher education, still others take entrepreneurial risks each day, all in hopes accomplishing the ‘American dream’. What many of us don’t realize is that crime has the potential to take it all away in a split second.

A great way to protect yourself and home is carry a good self defense pepper spray. Pepper spray is legal in all states (a few states have restrictions on the formula that can be used and/or where citizens can purchase their pepper spray or mace.). Pepper spray is inexpensive and lasts between three and four years, so you won’t need to replace it often. Pepper spray is effective from distances between 8 and 25 feet depending on the model.

One of the most appealing aspects of pepper spray is the ability to stop an attacker from a distance. Pepper spray works almost instantly and effects last up to 30 minutes. Many models for many different uses. Whether you need protection at home, at work, while exercising or for protection against aggressive dogs, you can find a model made for almost any occasion.

Like anything, there is always pro’s and con’s. I believe that the pro’s far outweigh the con’s when it comes to using pepper spray for self defense. Spraying a fogger style pepper spray directly into a stiff wind can lead to ‘blow-back’. This is when some of the spray comes back at the user. This can be all but eliminated by choosing a ballistic stream, foam or gel pepper spray. Practice makes perfect, if you are not willing to practice using a spray, then you probably should not carry it.

He seemed like the perfect guy. Smart, funny, outgoing and incredibly good looking and he asked her out for Friday night. They would go and hang out at a popular club, where all her friends like to go. They would be with a group so she knew she would be safe date.

The night was magical. He was charming and looked so handsome. All of her girlfriends were jealous. It made her want to laugh. He was such a gentleman, opening the door for her, fetching drinks, looking at her as if she were the only one in the room.

She wasn’t a heavy drinker, so when she began to feel a bit woozy after her second drink, she asked him to take her home. She told her friends that she felt a bit under the weather and would talk to them the next day.

On the ride home, she was slipping in and out of consciousness. She couldn’t imagine what was happening. All she remembered was her date saying everything was going to be alright. But everything was not alright, not for her.

The next morning she awoke with a writhing headache and a sense of fear. She still felt very groggy and it took awhile before she could sit up. She was stripped down, lying in her bed. Days would go by, before she could figure out what had happened. She had been drugged and raped by the perfect man. The nice looking, oh so charming gentleman, had slipped something into her drink, driven her home and raped her.

When she saw him again on campus he acted as if nothing had happened. She glared at him and hissed that she would report him. But he just stared back with a smug look on his face. Trying to prove a crime had taken place was near to impossible.

One in every five college aged women has been forced to have intercourse against her will. Sometimes the women have been victims of date rape drugs, other times they are taken advantage by a boyfriend, whom they trust.

College students away from home for the first time find themselves with a lot of freedom. For many people this is a time of growth and emergence into adulthood. Meeting new people and socializing with peers can be a wonderful experience. Parties are a regular happening and unfortunately so is underage drinking. Many times, it is under the influence of alcohol or narcotics that things get a bit confusing.

It is important to remember that without consent, intercourse is rape and sexual contact is sexual assault. This remains true even if consensual sex has taken place in the past, even if an expensive night out has been paid for, and even if in the absence of explicit protest. Acquaintance rape can happen to women and men of any sexual orientation. It is estimated that 80 to 85% of rapists are known to the person they attack.

Take a proactive stance on safe dating and rape prevention. Education and self defense products, such as pepper spray and personal alarms can provide safety or deter a tragic outcome. Self defense products in disguise such as lipstick pepper spray or cell phone stun guns are particularity effective.

It was easy for him to enter the dorm because the exterior door had been broken for weeks. He guessed to himself that most of the dorm rooms would be unlocked as well. He knew what he was after, laptops, jewelry, cell phones, credit cards and cash.

Once inside the building he tried the first room and it opened easily. Through the dim light he was able to find a purse. Dumping the contents onto the sofa, he gathered up the cell phone, pulled out the credit cards and grabbed the cash.

He eased back out of the room, undetected.

Silently, he opened the next door just as effortlessly. Here he grabbed another cell phone and some cash and moved on to the next room where he helped himself to a laptop computer.

Down the hall, a young female student awoke for an early class. She thought she heard footsteps in the hall. As she stepped out of the shower, she thought she heard someone in her room.

She walked out of the bathroom to find a strange man in a hooded sweatshirt standing in her room. Her roommate was still asleep in the next room.

He lunged at the girl and tried to grab her. She fought back and pushed him over a chair. He ran from her room, carrying the stolen items he had gotten from the other rooms. She then called 911.

Leaving the doors unlocked in their dorm rooms was a usual practice at this campus, which had always been regarded as safe.

Although there had been an earlier report of a college student being raped in the wee hours of the morning, residents on campus either were not alerted to the report or were not alarmed by it. Doors continued to be left unlocked including the main entry door of the dorm.

Tips For a Safe Dorm Room

Going away to college can be an exciting time for students and parents. A lot of thought and decision making were involved in choosing the college. Making the decision to live on campus in a dormitory or renting a nearby apartment should be one that is deliberated over carefully. What is the area like? What are the crime statistics on and around campus?

As you prepare yourself for college, one of the issues that you will want to take responsibility of will be your safety. Let’s start with your dorm room.

It is not uncommon for college students to leave their doors unlocked. Students know this and so do the criminals. Remember students with mal-intent on their minds can look just like any other person. Be smart, be safe, be proactive, don’t let an unlocked door give a thief, rapist or murderer the ability to come into your room and do you harm.

Keep your dorm room door locked. This goes for when you are in your room too. For added protection use a door stop alarm It works like a regular door stop except when pressure is applied it emits a 120 decibel alarm that continues until the pressure is released.

Check all doors and windows, make sure they close properly and securely. All exterior building doors should be solid wood or be reinforced with steel. Find out what your university’s policy is on safety. Start a petition to have working, locks and solid exterior doors on all dormitory buidings.

Check all locks on windows and doors. There should be heavy duty latches on the windows and deadbolts on all of the doors. You need a deadbolt on your dorm door in the event students leave the main entrance doors propped open or unlocked. This will at least offer some level of security for your room.

Utilize a portable motion detector, they are inexpensive and produce an infrared triangular barrier that is impossible to penetrate without setting off the alarm.

Don’t leave your valuables out in plain sight. Use a hidden safe or diversion safe, to stash your checkbook, cash, debit, credit or social security cards safely out of sight.

Always keep pepper spray within reach. A 2 oz. canister is ideal for keeping in your dorm room. Be sure to carry a key chain style pepper spray with you anytime you go out.

Just because someone knocks at your door, does not mean you have to open it. Always find out who is on the other side of the door, before you open it. Keep your pepper spray within easy reach of your door, if someone tries to force their way in, you can deter them with a quick shot to the face. The effects last up to 45 minutes, giving you plenty of time to get help and get to safety.

After studying with her friend, a young freshman student begins walking back to her dorm. It was dark outside around 10:00 p.m. and not many people were around. As she turned down one sidewalk she saw a familiar guy that she had met at a party recently. She couldn’t remember his name, but he seemed like a nice guy that night.

As she passed by, he mumbled something and she stepped closer to hear him. That’s when he grabbed her and started pulling her behind a dark building. She reached in her pocket and pulled out her pepper spray. A quick shot to the face and he quickly let go of her arm. He began shouting and calling her name’s, to get the attention of others she pressed down on her Electronic whistle with a 120 decibel alarm. The loud alarm brought some people out of their dorms and they summoned the police who arrested the attacker.

There are criminals out there who believe it is their right to take what they want. Theives, rapists, and murderers who prey on others are just waiting for the chance to catch someone off guard. Being violated in any way, leaves a lasting effect on a person. Some people who are victims of crime feel as if they are to blame. This is never true.

However, it is irresponsible for individuals to walk around clueless when it comes to safety. Being proactive can make the difference in a wonderful college experience or an unfortunate incident that could affect you for a lifetime.

Before leaving your dorm or apartment, check that all doors and windows are locked.

Make sure you have your pepper spray with you and be prepared to use it.

Be aware of anyone hanging around or loitering near your dorm or apartment. College students are more likely to be stalked or violated.

Park your car in a well lighted area. Check all around your car as you approach it. If there is a van parked next to you, get in on the other side. Vans are large and obstruct your view. Someone could easily hide behind a van and grab you as you try to get into your car. Sliding doors or double swing doors on vans make it easy for an attacker to force a victim inside and rape or kidnap them.

Keep a flashlight or lighted key ring handy so you can locate your keys and enter your car quickly and safely.

Walk on the side of the street closest to traffic. If accosted by someone in a car, run in the opposite direction of the way the car is headed.

When you get home, especially after dark, try to go in right away. If anything looks out of place or anything is different than the way you left it, get out immediately, go to a neighbors’s dorm or apartment and call for police assistance.

Safeguard your mail.

Don’t carry your social security card around with you. If your wallet is stolen, this valuable piece of your identity could fall into the wrong hands and your personal financial privacy could be exposed.

Log off your computer anytime you leave it.

Keep doors locked at all times when you are home. The main point of entry for a burglar or home invasion is through an unlocked door. Don’t make it easy for an intruder. Always lock your doors when you leave, you don’t want to be burglarized nor do you want to come home and find someone in your home.

I just finished reading a tragic story of a a 23 year old American female traveling in Nepal who has been missing since for over two months. The FBI is now involved and foul play appears all by imminent. This young who was last seen on a nature hike in an area just south of the Tibetan border; authorities have little to go own. Investigators are trying to determine what happened. Many fear that she was murdered, others believe she’s been kidnapped by an underground sex-trade ring that is responsible for the abduction of nearly 15,000 women per year in Nepal.

So what are some proactive steps that you can take to keep yourself safe while hiking, camping or enjoying the great outdoors.

Safety and Personal Security While Hiking and Camping

As a rule, ALWAYS hike or camp with at least one companion. If you are hiking or traveling to a remote area have a minimum of four people in your group.

Be sure to pack emergency flares or some type of signaling device.

Locate a place that you can go to for help if necessary.

Always leave a copy of your itinerary with a family member or trusted friend. This should be a detailed list and include directions, names, addresses, contact information, license plate of vehicle

Know the rules of the place you plan to visit. Research regulations about campfires, pets, and wildlife to name a few.

Obtain a map of the area from a Park Ranger, keep it in your backpack or on your person at all times.

Protect yourself using a non-lethal self defense product such as pepper spray or mace.

Chances are good that you will come in contact with potentially dangerous wildlife. Learn what animals to expect encounter and how to avoid danger.

Bears and snakes are the main threat to humans. Consider carrying a bear spray or repellent for defense against dangerous bear attacks. You should be able to identify poisonous snakes that are prevalent in th area.

Poison oak can put an end to hiking and camping fun quickly. Know what it looks like and do your best to stay clear. Plan ahead by packing a poison oak treatment.

Dealing With Emergencies

Take care get your doctors approval prior to setting out

Don’t forget to fill and pack a 30 day supply of all necessary prescription and non-prescription drugs.

You need to take a good first aid kit with you. If you have one make sure that contents have not expired.

Camping and hiking is physically demanding, be sure your fitness level will allow you to safely take the trip.

Skills, Supplies and Equipment

Camping and hiking skills are acquired over time. If you are new to it educate yourself with books, websites and other resources.

Pay attention to the weather. Make sure you are prepared for the expected weather.

Cold weather gear should always be part of your wardrobe, just in case conditions change.

Plan for the worst case, what if the weather was bad and forced you to spend the night outside unexpectedly

Essentials To Bring

Some things you need to bring:

plenty of water and purification tablets or filters

first aid kit; a whistle;

any needed medications

sunscreen

radio with extra batteries

map

pocket knife

signal mirror

cell phone

candles and matches in a waterproof container

flashlight

sunglasses and a hat for

sun protection

insect repellent

extra clothing, like extra sox and rain gear

maps and compass

extra food; nylon filament, extra pair of prescription
glasses; space blanket; trash bags, which can be used as ponchos or ground cover

What pepper spray brands do law enforcement professionals carry? This often determines the pepper spray brand that consumers want to purchase. Like any free market industry, competition, market share, and a desire to make money drive manufacturers to launch and market numerous brands. All of these defense spray brands claim to be the best and the hottest. The fact is that many of the claims that manufacturers make are unfounded or simply untrue. Only a hand full of companies make premium pepper spray products and then spend the necessary resources on research and development. These manufactures also fund independent scientific studies related to the effectiveness and then publish the findings for everyone to see.

Trusted manufacturers like Fox Labs, SABRE, Defense Technology and Wildfire command the great majority of professional law enforcement agencies trust. This speaks volumes about the products; if it meets the needs of local, state, and federal agencies as their first line of defense when safety and well being are on the line, then it will meet your needs as well.

Here are a few testimonials from the professionals who use these defense sprays:

IMMEDIATE STOPPING POWER
“We had a paranoid schizophrenic large male off his medication go crazy in a hair salon full of people. He was barricaded in a bathroom and screaming about the devil. One spray in the face and it was immediately effective. We waited for about 2-3 seconds and I gave him commands to prone out and put his hands behind his back. He must have thought the devil spit in his eyes. He did everything we asked. It was great! We made some more believers’ in your product today. Thanks!”

“As the institution’s Armory Officer and Chemical Agents instructor, I test and order all chemical agents for our prison. After several conversations about Sabre, I ordered the MK-9 5.0. The 5.0 is issued to our on-duty incident responders; all other officers carry other company’s O.C. products. As usual, people are resistant to change. However, after only a couple of Sabre deployments, staff loves the Sabre product. Other staff has requested to carry the Sabre as well.”

“I was walking with my 11 pound dog. A truck was parked on the side of a residential street with three young adult males inside. As I passed one of three young men old got out and said he needed money to get gas. I stated that I don’t carry money with me when I’m walking. He said he was going to take my dog…with a little cigar in his mouth – he started at me as if he was going to slug me. I reached into my back pocket and aimed, then fired my MK-3 pepper spray at his face – almost immediately he went down to the ground. I didn’t get his plate number but walked to the end of the block to where they could see me and I called the police. They, one of the other two, I guess drove away fast. The Lord was with me for guiding me to order the MK-3. Thanks for your service!!” Julius Okruhlik

“Recently, I used the WildFire 18% Pepper Spray in the recovery of bail jumper. I am impressed. This spray stopped the aggression of the target without direct contact! The reactivity of this spray, surpassed sprays i have used in the past.” E.R. Smith, Professional Bail Bondsman
