Make Personal Safety A Top Resolution This Year

Well another year has come and gone. As we embark on the new year, it is wise to reflect and review on the past year. Did we meet our goals and objectives? Personal safety is an area that is often overlooked. Are you vulnerable to a would-be criminal? Is your wife or children an easy target? Most of us find ourselves consumed by our day-to-day lives. The last thing on our minds is falling victim to an assault, robbery, rape or home invasion. Unfortunately, for many of us it only becomes a priority after we’ve been directly affected.

I challenge you to make personal safety a top resolution in 2016. Here are some tips to help you be successful.

  • Pay attention to your surroundings. Keep your eyes open and trust your gut feelings. If you feel something’s not right, it probably isn’t right
  • Stay in well lit and populated areas. Don’t even think about walking through an alley-way to save time.
  • Walk with confidence and purpose. Know where you are going and if you get lost, make it look like you know where you are. Don’t allow yourself to be easily surprised.
  • If you’re being followed, or see a person or group ahead you want to
    avoid, make changes in your path. Cross the street, walk in another direction, or duck into a well populated place.
  • In public or social situations work on keeping an eye on your surroundings. Keep your hands free, eyes and ears open. Don’t allow yourself to become distracted by your smart phone or other activity that you loose touch with your surroundings.
  • Make eye contact. If you feel threatened or intimidated it’s natural to avoid eye contact. But looking someone straight in the face is the best deterrent. That eye contact may scare off a potential attacker because they fear you will be able to identify them.
  • Change things up often. If you are a walker, jogger or biker, it is best to change your route regularly. Plan out different routes and identify safe places you can go for help. If trouble arises, you can stop at these places and know you will be safe.
  • The “buddy system” works, use it. If at all possible, go places and do things in groups. If that’s not possible, there are several safety apps available that allow you to send contacts a text message with your location so they can track your safety throughout an activity. Some apps allow you to check-in or broadcast your current location to contacts through SMS messaging.

What happens when it’s too late. If you find yourself in a violent situation. Fight like your life depends on it. Having and using good quality pepper spray can stop a determined attacker quickly. Many law enforcement agencies consider pepper spray to be the most effective non-lethal personal security solution because of it’s ease of use and it’s high rate of effectiveness.

Pepper spray is the most popular non-lethal self defense option on the market today. So effective at stopping attackers that nearly all law enforcement agencies arm officers with it. Police officers are instructed to use pepper spray as the first line of defense. The effects of pepper spray are almost immediate and upon direct contact with the eyes, respiratory system and mucous membranes begin to wreak havoc on the human body. The eyes involuntarily close shut, uncontrollable coughing ensues, and an intense burning sensation to the skin are some of the intense effects. Pepper spray is non-lethal and effects will begin to lesson in 30 to 45 minutes.

5 Tips To Increase Runner Safety

November is National Runner Safety Month which is dedicated to increasing runner safety through education and awareness. Here are 5 tips to make sure you run safely.

  • If at all possible run with a “buddy”! If you can’t make the “buddy” system work, the next best alternative is to let someone know where you’ll be and when to expect you back. Technology makes this easy, many phone apps now offer free services that send your contacts a text message with your location, so they can track your safety throughout an activity such as running or biking.
  • If you run before the sun comes up or after dark be sure to illuminate yourself. Last month, while out for an evening run around my the neighborhood I was almost hit by a neighbor. It happened so quickly, he was distracted and didn’t see me. I jumped into the ditch to avoid a collision. I now make sure to wear reflective clothing and a clip-on flashing strobe light. Drivers can see runners who wear proper visibility gear from 6X the distance than those runners who don’t.
  • Many of us put the headphones in, turn up the music and zone out. It’s really important to turn the music down so you can hear what’s going on around you. Consider wearing headphones in only one ear. Lack of awareness can make you an attractive target to criminals. Dog attacks should also be a concern.
  • Alternate your route weekly. If you take the same route, at the same time each day you could potentially become an easy target for assailants. Instead, change your route frequently while adjusting the times you run accordingly.
  • Bring a self defense product. Consider carrying a canister of pepper spray and a personal alarm. These items can save your life during an attack. Pepper spray is highly effective at deterring both human and animal attacks. A personal alarm emits high decibel sound – its sole purpose is to make noise and attract attention during an emergency.

Uber Driver Attacked Uses Pepper Spray In Self Defense

In this video a Taco Bell executive manager is accused of attacking an UBER driver. The rider appears to be intoxicated and will not or can not provide a destination address. After several unsuccessful attempts to obtain an address, the UBER driver pulls over and tells the rider his trip is over. That’s when the exec “snaps” and becomes violent! Thankfully, the UBER driver is able to stop the attack using pepper spray in self defense.

The Extreme College Safety Kit – Product Review

In my opinion, the most valuable product offering in our self defense product repertoire is the Extreme College Safety Kit. Why you ask? Our college students are vulnerable to various crimes. Many times these “kids” are targeted for robbery, assault and sexual assault.

According to The US Department of Education’s (DOE) Campus Safety and Security Data Analysis Cutting Tool, there were more than 5000 Forcible Sex Offenses reported on US Campuses in 2013. Robbery, Aggravated Assault and Burglary are also prevalent on US College Campuses. With nearly 16,000 burglaries, 2300 aggravated assaults, and 1600 robberies. Trend data from DOE shows a 46.76% increase in Forcible Sex Offenses reported on US Campuses from 2011 to 2013!

The Extreme College Safety Kit is a unique collection of self defense products designed to keep college students protected in every situation. The package includes four different pepper spray products; a disguised pepper spray that looks like lipstick, an auto-visor model, a key-chain unit and a personal size. The drowsy driver Nap Alarm is worn around the ear and designed to sound an alarm if you “nod off” while driving. The high decibel personal alarm will get much needed attention in an emergency. The door stop alarm and motion alert will secure an apartment or dorm room. The book diversion safe provides a place to hide away valuables. The cell phone light provides a nice, bright LED flashlight.

This package comes with a demonstration and training DVD. A quick demo shows you how to correctly use each product. Additionally, six special safety reports are included and provide both education and awareness to topics such as: college safety, rape reports, dorm or apartment safety, roommates, safe dating and college preparation for parents.

Every college student would be better off with this collection of self defense items. You can order the Extreme College Safety Kit or get more information HERE.

Why You Should Be Using Mace For Self Defense

using Mace for self-defense

We will discuss why you should be using Mace for self defense in today’s post, but first some background information.

Modern day history of pepper spray started in 1973 when the FBI “worked to develop weapons grade material in the 80s”. In 1994, the N.Y.P.D. decided to adopt pepper spray as an anti-personnel weapon. So you can see the history of modern day pepper spray is relatively new.

The same ingredient that makes major topical arthritis creams so effective-capsaicin-usually at only 0.1% (most sprays are at least 10%)-is the major ingredient in all pepper sprays. It is a concentration of oleoresin capsicum which is the resin of cayenne pepper-one of the hottest peppers in the world. Other ingredients in pepper sprays can include CN teargas and a UV marking dye for assailant identification.

For any person who has been in the military, part of your basic training is being sprayed with pepper spray. The same is true for anyone who wishes to become a federal, state or local police officer. Getting to know how pepper spray feels is part of your training. It is not fun!

Here’s why you should be using Mace for self-defense.

The victim’s eyes clamp shut-not just because of the excessive tearing-but also the dilation of the capillaries.

It makes breathing difficult with immediate inflammation and swelling of the throat restricting the airway. Uncontrollable coughing and gasping for air is common.

And of course, the most famous is the pain caused by contact with exposed skin. Does it ever hurt!

There is also the sensation of the loss of balance and disorientation. Using Mace for self-defense is nasty stuff!

When your self-defense is on the line using mace for self-defense makes all kinds of sense. It is effective, legal, relatively inexpensive and Mace brand has the biggest selection and widest variety of pepper sprays in the industry.

Mace Maritime pepper gel is a good example. It uses a 1.4% major capsaicinoids formula that can fire 25 feet. The pistol grip canister contains 330 grams and can empty in six seconds.

What Is Oleoresin Capsicum?

What is oleoresin capsicum? It is a funny sounding name; actually two words that comprise the essence of pepper spray. The two words are; oleoresin which means an oil holding resin in solution, and capsaicin which is the active ingredient in peppers that makes them hot. Capsaicin is the major ingredient in creams and lotions “commonly marketed to relieve muscle and joint pain.”

To rephrase it, oleoresin capsicum is the resin of one of the hottest peppers in the world, the cayenne-combined with water, glycol and a propellant such as nitrogen to make it usable as a defense spray in a canister.

According to Wikipedia “Pepper spray, also known as OC spray, OC gas, and capsicum spray, is a lachrymatory agent (meaning it can cause teary eyes and a runny nose) used in policing, riot control, crowd control, and personal self-defense, including defense against dogs and bears.”

Pepper spray is widely recognized as the largest selling, most popular self defense product in the world. In the United States it is legal in all 50 states with a few cities and states having restrictions.

It makes the eyes swell up and inflames the mucous membranes of the upper respiratory tract; it causes temporary blindness and a great deal of pain.

It is used for protection against human assailants and animal attacks, specifically dogs and bears. Every law enforcement officer in the country carries oleoresin capsicum on his utility belt as his first nonlethal protection tool. The U.S.P.S. issues defensive sprays to all of their letter carriers as their first line of defense against dog attacks.

For civilians, oleoresin capsicum is a favorite among both women and men because it is so effective, so inexpensive and so easy to use. It is over to 95% effective on average.

We carry a very extensive line of oleoresin capsicum products from several different manufacturers in all price ranges.

Sexual Assaults On Campus-Most Involve Drugs Or Alcohol

Here’s a story about campus Sexual Assaults where US representative Pat Meehan R-Delaware, convened regional experts on campus safety last month to discuss the issue and come up with policy recommendations on how to narrow the gap between the number of actually assaulted women and the number who choose to report it.

Nearly 20 percent of women attending college are sexually assaulted or victims of an attempted assault, yet only between 5 and 12 percent of them report the attacks.

“That gap is staggering,” he said. “That amount of victims is eye-opening. We have a responsibility to work collaboratively to assure that we not only prevent future sexual assault in an environment like a college setting, but we are able to respond more effectively to those victims.”
Many women are under the influence when the attacks occur, he said, resulting in “incapacitated assault.”

“Incapacitated assault means that there has been alcohol, drugs, some other kind of agent that may have influenced the ability of parties to be appropriately responsive,” Meehan said Monday.

It has been estimated that as much as 70% of all sexual assaults on college campuses involved drugs or alcohol or both.

We recommend that young women everywhere, but especially on a college campus, carry a self-defense product with them. Products that are on keychains are best because they’re more likely to be with you at all times.

Hurdle In Domestic Violence

Domestic violence in a relationship is about as difficult a situation to handle as any. It is fraught with hurdles. This story is about one Domestic Violence Hurdle that typifies the problems with domestic violence.

It essentially talks about police involvement.

“When a police officer responds to a (domestic violence) call, the first thing he or she does is to separate the people involved and try to piece together what happened. The officers then attempt to discover who the main aggressor is in the situation. Ninety-nine percent of the time, that person is the male, but he and other officers have also seen females who instigate the violence.

Many times the victims of domestic violence do not cooperate with the police. Whether it’s because they are still in love with the aggressor or because the aggressor is the victim’s only source of income, there are many victims who do not want to press charges against their abusers and will not testify against them in court.

The question then becomes why do so many victims back away from filing charges when the police show up? Why do women choose to stay with their abusers rather than go out on their own and live a violence free life?

Research shows that it can take as many as seven attempts to leave a domestic violence situation before they actually leave.

Among the many internal and external factors play a role in the person’s choice to remain in an abusive situation are threats made against the victim or family members, cultural or religious beliefs, and a lack of resources such as a place to live or access to a stable income. Internally, the most consistent thing is that they suffer from poor self-image and confidence, which is what the abuser preys on.

The question for so many women is it easier to stay and put up with the abuse or leave? It is not easy to leave.
There are ways to identify the signs before it gets out of control, and there are plenty of resources if you’re feeling scared or alone.

Among many other things women need are nonlethal self-defense weapons.

This Sabre Pepper Spray is on a keychain and has a range of 10 feet with a ballistic stream delivery which reduces the chance for blowback.

Assaults On Women

This is a story from the Blackpool Gazette in the United Kingdom about Assaults On Women.

The gist of the story is that, on average, a woman will be hit or threatened by a partner 35 times before she reports it to the authorities.

“Historically domestic abuse is a hidden crime. What happens within four walls, stays within four walls.”

The abuse does not have to be physical it can be emotional verbal or psychological abuse to have the same degrading impact.

One reason that women put up with it for so long is because they fear they have no option and that there is no place to go. With their shelters all over the place and help from professionals.

Another form of abuse is being overly protective and possessive, preventing you from leading a normal lifestyle.

“It is a difficult area to deal with, but there are a number of reasons why people don’t report, or change their mind, which we have to have an understanding of – and we do have an understanding of.

“We are trained to recognize those signs. It can be coercion, it can be ongoing threats of violence. There are a number of reasons why victims change their mind after reporting and although it does frustrate the process, we understand the reasons behind it.”

If you are in a domestic abuse relationship, you don’t have to put up with it. You can develop an escape plan but most of all you need to learn how to protect yourself from further assaults. A self-defense pepper spray is one of the best ways you can do that.

The Wildfire Keychain Spray as shown here has an 18% solution of oleoresin capsicum the main ingredient in all pepper sprays. But 18% is nearly twice as hot as their competitors, making it more effective.

Popular Wildfire Defensive Sprays

In today’s blog post we’re doing a review of the most popular Wildfire pepper sprays.

They all have an 18% concentration of oleoresin capsicum which makes them nearly twice as hot as most sprays. They are made and independently tested in the USA with many sizes and styles to choose from.

The most popular is this key ring spray that contains 25 half-second shots up to 12 feet away. It has a thumb lock safety to prevent accidental spraying and includes a UV marking dye for assailant identification. It has a built-in belt clip and key ring for easy carrying. It uses a rugged injection molded black hard case to protect the canister.

The second most popular wildfire pepper spray is this pepper gel spray and has a range up to 18 feet and uses less contaminating nonflammable formula that sticks to an attacker like glue. It has the same 18% concentration that all other wildfire sprays have. It has 40 half second bursts.

Pepper sprays are legal in all cities and states but a few cities and states have restrictions on them. Pepper sprays are the most popular self-defense product in the world because they are easy to use and so effective-at nearly 90% efficiency.

Domestic Violence-The Secret Killer

Everyone knows about domestic violence as a criminal issue. But this article by Forbes magazine talks about it in a social, business and health context.

Read the whole story from Forbes magazine HERE.

The article makes the argument that “domestic violence reduces productivity leads to absenteeism and drives up health care costs” costing an estimated $8.3 billion was higher medical expenses and lost productivity.

“Nearly a quarter of employed women report that domestic violence has affected their work performance at some point in their lives. Each year, an estimated 8 million days of paid work is lost in the U.S. because of domestic violence” according to the article.

We’ve seen some progress since then, but the silence remains deafening. Every manager or business owner has a role to play in domestic violence if for no other reason than to improve the level of productivity of their business.

One of the best ways that women can defend themselves in a domestic abuse situation is with a self-defense product such as this Sabre brand StopStrap Pepper Spray that has a 10% concentration of oleoresin capsicum with a stop strap that prevents the spray from being used against you, should it be taken away in a struggle.

Aussie Domestic Violence Crackdown

If you think for one minute the United States is the only country that has a domestic violence problem think again!

Here’s a story out of Australia, where police in Alice Springs have made more than 280 arrests as part of an operation targeting domestic violence.

Read the whole story HERE.

For some reason domestic violence seems higher in this central Australian city where “statistics show Indigenous women are 45 times more likely to be victims of domestic violence than others in the Northern Territory.”

During the first six months of the operation police arrested 287 people in connection with 774 domestic violence offenses. Just in the last week 14 more people have been arrested for offenses including aggravated assault and breaching bail. Police say they will continue to work with family and community members to bring those responsible for domestic violence to justice.

It is not clear what brought this sudden aggressive action on domestic violence about. All we can say is, it’s about time.

Ending domestic abuse and sexual assault against women may be a pipe dream, but women need to learn how to defend themselves-which is reality.

Young Women And Relationship Violence

About 10 years ago the Liz Claiborne Corporation did a comprehensive study about teenage dating and the perils associated with it such as assaults that are normally connected to domestic violence. Recently there was another study done and the conclusions and facts presented were almost exactly the same. What does that mean? That nothing has gotten better for young women in their dating relationships!

Teenage girls are at a high risk of relationship violence. Some of the facts are:

1. 15% of high school girls reports being abused by their boyfriends;

2. Date rape which accounts for 70% of sexual assaults reported by adolescents in college;

3. 38% of those are between 14 and 17;

4. One in three teen dating relationships has a physical aggression component.

5. Nearly 75% girls have reported some sort of emotional partner violence.

One of the points raised in this most recent study is that young women really have no place to learn what is normal and what is not normal in a dating relationship. When these young women talk to their friends many of them are experiencing the same thing so they tend to think that abuse is a normal thing.

Recently Pres. Obama announced from the White House the formation of the new task force looking into sexual assaults on college campuses. Those statistics haven’t changed much over the years either, with one for women being a target for sexual assault in her four years at a University.

Has your daughter been involved in a dating relationship that went bad?

Some signs that your daughter may be in an abusive relationship include:

1. Not spending time with her usual friends;

2. Fewer friends on Facebook;

3. More withdrawn personality or less bubbly and engaged than usual;

4. Changes in appearance style or activities;

5. Obvious physical signs of abuse;

6. Defensive, angry attitude about current physical status.

For young women we recommend that they take a basic self-defense training course to learn how to defend themselves in just about any situation and then obtain and learn how to use a self-defense product such as a pepper spray.

Military Women: Sexual Assault And Harassment Remain

click for more info

As the military tries again to deal with an epidemic of sexual assaults, these three service members have witnessed the problem firsthand. They know what happens when those who are victimized try to report assaults. They have seen commanders look away or worse.

You can read the whole story HERE.

“The Senate is drafting its annual defense bill this month, including a provision that would strengthen how the Pentagon handles sexual assaults and harassment. Military leaders oppose a plan that would remove discretion from commanders to overrule juries in some of these cases, but a tougher proposal offered by Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., is gaining bipartisan support.

They, and those trying to help victims, all agree on one thing — these problems won’t be fixed until the commanders of those committing the assaults no longer have the power to decide who is punished. In the military, for crimes from DUI to sexual assault, the commander, under the advice of a lawyer, decides whether a case will be handled administratively, through non-judicial punishment, such as a pay decrease or reduction in rank; or whether it will go to trial and what the charges will be.”

The best way for anyone to defend themselves against an assault is with a Fox labs
