Do You REALLY Need Any Home Security Devices?

Have you seen the statistics on home burglary? Many people consider them alarming, and we don't mean that as a pun. Yes, security alarms are effective home security devices, but they are only one of many. Back to the statistics. "The FBI tells us that a home burglary happens every 13 seconds in the United States and is the most common threat to your home. Police also tell us that 90% of all burglaries can be prevented. Burglars steal $2,119 worth of goods and another $2,000 worth of damage, on average, to every victimized home. Police usually only clear 13% of all reported burglaries due to lack of witnesses or physical evidence. Of all burglaries, 60.5 percent involved forcible entry, 33.2 percent were unlawful entries (without force), and the remainder 6.3 percent were forcible entry attempts (unsuccessful). In 2010, there were an estimated 2,159,878 burglaries. They increased 2.0 percent in 2010 compared to the 2001 estimate."

If those statistics don't convince you that you need home security devices around your home, then you need to think again. Most home security devices provide simple, inexpensive and yet very effective home security. The product referred to above puts out a 110 dB alarm when the protected door or window is opened. It can provide protection for doors and windows, even sliding glass doors and cabinets that holds potentially dangerous products such as drugs, or cleaning products. It is only 2 ½ inches long and comes with alarm batteries and adhesive tape to secure it to the door or window. Home security devices should only be considered a last line of defense to prevent burglars from getting into your home. You should take some other steps to preclude the burglar from even thinking about breaking in. Those might include eliminating potential hiding places the burglars would use to conceal their whereabouts, installing some fake security cameras around the perimeter of your home and placing some signs in your front yard that warn of a vicious guard dog or of a home security system in place. So the answer to the question "do you really need home security devices?" is yes absolutely, but only if you want to protect your home and the contents.
