Healthy Teen Relationships-Taught In Schools?

Share

Here is an article that was written recently about Teen Relationship Violence and raises the question about whether or not it should be taught in schools.

We have always maintained that teens have no frame of reference for what is a healthy relationship and what isn’t.

Growing up is difficult enough, but when a young girl gets into a serious relationship she really has no idea what to expect. She is blown off her feet by the flattery of her new friend. Chances are she has seen enough domestic violence in her life through friends, family and chat rooms that she may come to expect that it is normal.

There is plenty of evidence to indicate that domestic violence is a learned trait passed down from father to son. The same could be said for dating or relationship violence.

And part of the problem too is that young women don’t feel they have anybody to talk to about the subject, sometimes for fear of ridicule from friends.

The goal of the education is to teach teens how to manage their relationships and to be aware of warning signs for violence so they can get help.

“Relationship violence is a form of bullying … And yet, bullying education is mandatory; sexual aggression awareness training is mandatory, but dating violence isn’t and that doesn’t make sense because they are all part of the same thing.”

One of the best ways that young women can defend themselves against dating violence is with one of our Mace Pepper Sprays which can disable an assailant for as much as 45 minutes.
