Domestic Violence Is An Equal Opportunity Destroyer

Share

A recent study conducted by the American Psychological Association contradicted stereotypes that domestic violence is more prevalent in low-income or minority households. You can read the whole story HERE.

Basically it showed violent incidents crossed economic lines with near equal percentages in all income brackets. Families of all races and ethnicities were also affected and three of every four perpetrators were male. “Family violence definitely cuts across all society’s segments and income levels and has a serious impact on children, the nationwide study indicates.

“The study interviewed children who had witnessed domestic violence. Three in four children saw the violence, 21 percent heard it and 3 percent saw the injuries later. The violence included beating, hitting and kicking a parent or caregiver. One in 75 cases reported the child was physically hurt during a violent attack on their abused parent. All experienced fear and anxiety, and more than half said they were afraid someone would be hurt badly. The children indicated the violence was one of their scariest experiences ever, according to the study published online April 7 in the APA journal Psychology of Violence.”

Female Assaults On College Campuses

Share

Here is another story about Assaults On Women specifically in Missouri where U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill has led a national push to scrutinize rape and sexual assaults of women on college campuses.

“There are young women that are victimized every day, every hour, at a college campus somewhere,” McCaskill told the News-Leader on Thursday. “Too often young women second-guess themselves. ‘I should not have been drinking. I should not have been in his room. I did not know him well enough.’

“They do that instead of taking a clear look and realizing that they have a been a victim of a felony,” McCaskill said. “You do not have to have perfect judgment to be a victim of a crime.”

McCaskill previously had focused her efforts on helping women sexually assaulted in the military.

One of the main differences between colleges and the military is that the military has a rigid chain of command, which in some ways makes addressing the problem simpler. Higher education has no such line of authority.

There are other differences as well but the main similarity is women on college campuses — like women in the military — live in small, closed communities where word travels fast. This makes some students reluctant to report.

Administrators too often do not support women who report they were sexually assaulted on campus. She mentioned high-profile examples at the University of Montana and Notre Dame University. The schools fear that such publicity hurts their image and their student recruitment, she said.

Colleges administrators have been openly hostile, she said, when female students allege rape and sexual assault.

Nearly one in five women in college are victims of attempted or actual sexual assault in their undergraduate careers, according to McCaskill’s office.

A report from the National Institute of Justice states that college women are at higher risk for sexual assault than their non-college peers.

We always recommend that women on a college campus carry a self-defense product such as a pepper spray and one of the best to carry is one that’s on a keychain. We have many KEYCHAIN PEPPER SPRAYS to choose from. They are legal in just about all jurisdictions and can disable an assailant for as long as 45 minutes.

Pepper spray will cause intense pain, excessive tearing of the eyes and make breathing very difficult.

Berkeley Campus Sexual Assaults

Share

Here is a story out of Business Week Magazine about how College Sexual Assaults are (mis) handled.

According to the story four women reported that the same student assaulted them. A school administrator asked that they put their story in writing and submit the stories to the administrator. For one reason or another, the written accounts never got filed. One of the students claim that the verbal accounting of the story should have been enough but the students (complainants) were convinced the school did nothing.

The perpetrator was allowed to go on a summer travel program and remained a member of the political club.

One of the students didn’t hear anything from the school for months but finally, eight months after she reported her assault, she received two three-sentence e-mails from Berkeley saying her case was resolved and the student was found “in violation of the code of conduct.” He graduated in December 2012.

Fast-forward to February 2014. The student wasn’t satisfied so she and 30 other current and former students filed two complaints with the U.S. Department of Education charging that the school violated their Title IX rights by mishandling their cases and, in some instances, discouraging them from filing reports. The 70-page, 35,000-word document alleges negligence, botched investigations, and general incompetence, and includes incidents that date to the 1970s.

The very best way that women on a college campus can defend themselves against the sexual assault on or off campus is with the self-defense product. We always recommend one that’s on a keychain because it’s more likely to be with you all the time. And you never know when you could be assaulted.

Pepper Spray Disbursement Types

Share

In today’s blog post we’re taking a look at different types of pepper sprays. The first way to differentiate them is by brand. We carry several top of the line brands of pepper sprays including Mace brand; Fox brand defensive sprays; Sabre defensive sprays; Guard Dog sprays; Pepper Shot sprays and more.

They each have their own characteristics that differentiate them from other products but the differences are slight. After all they all do the same thing.

The next biggest way to differentiate pepper sprays is by the spray pattern or disbursement method. The four types of disbursement methods are the stream or broken stream, the cone spray, foggers and foams.

Stream or broken stream is a shot with more force and thus has a longer range and less chance of blowback to your face, which might happen with a mist or the cone spray.

Cone spray is the next type. The advantage of using a cone spray is that it can cover a wider area, usually as much is 2 feet. The cone spray can travel 6 to 12 feet. It is highly susceptible to windy conditions. Because the mist in a cone spray is so fine it easily be inhaled, which can cause “instant choking and uncontrollable coughing.”

The fogger is the third disbursement method. It is more commonly used for multiple attackers, crowd control, and most commonly as a Bear Spray. A fogger is considered to be the fastest acting of all sprays.

Foam or Gel Sprays are the most effective in windy conditions and use a thick, heavy foam that can accumulate on a face making it virtually impossible to wipe off. Its effects are worse if you try to remove it. All you do then is grind the ingredients into your face making the pain worse.

We like this Sabre Red Formula that uses a maximum strength pepper gel making it perfect for indoor use. Because it’s a gel it can spray up to 18 feet, longer than most sprays and foggers.

Healthy Teen Relationships-Taught In Schools?

Share

Here is an article that was written recently about Teen Relationship Violence and raises the question about whether or not it should be taught in schools.

We have always maintained that teens have no frame of reference for what is a healthy relationship and what isn’t.

Growing up is difficult enough, but when a young girl gets into a serious relationship she really has no idea what to expect. She is blown off her feet by the flattery of her new friend. Chances are she has seen enough domestic violence in her life through friends, family and chat rooms that she may come to expect that it is normal.

There is plenty of evidence to indicate that domestic violence is a learned trait passed down from father to son. The same could be said for dating or relationship violence.

And part of the problem too is that young women don’t feel they have anybody to talk to about the subject, sometimes for fear of ridicule from friends.

The goal of the education is to teach teens how to manage their relationships and to be aware of warning signs for violence so they can get help.

“Relationship violence is a form of bullying … And yet, bullying education is mandatory; sexual aggression awareness training is mandatory, but dating violence isn’t and that doesn’t make sense because they are all part of the same thing.”

One of the best ways that young women can defend themselves against dating violence is with one of our Mace Pepper Sprays which can disable an assailant for as much as 45 minutes.

Stopping College Campus Sexual Assaults

Share

Recently U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal D-Conn. met with the University of St. Joseph students, professors and staff and talked about the need for cultural change regarding Campus Sexual Assaults.

This was the third roundtable discussion that Sen. Blumenthal has had about sexual assaults on college campuses. He hopes to shape legislation and propose funding for programs that might help prevent it and better serve assault victims-good luck Senator!

Their laws on the books now and tons of money that have been thrown at this problem but the statistics haven’t changed.

— Close to 25% of all females on a college campus will be sexually assaulted in her four years there.
— Only an estimated one out of every 10 sexual assaults is ever even reported.
— The perpetrators are known to the victims and 90% of the cases-they are classmates.
— Little of anything is ever done to the perpetrators if they are caught which hardly ever happens.
— Alcohol is involved in over 70% of the cases.

The attention this year to sexual assault on college campuses in Connecticut was spurred by a Title IX complaint seven current and former University of Connecticut students filed in October, charging that UConn didn’t protect them from sexual assault and didn’t provide them with the help they needed when they reported it.

“Blumenthal said he has heard that some college women are reluctant to report a sexual assault if they have been drinking. They feel they’ll be told, ‘You’re underage, you were drunk, what did you expect? You were at that fraternity. Don’t you know that?’ But that’s not a defense.”

The best way the females on a campus can defend themselves is with a self-defense product such as pepper spray or stun gun.

Domestic Violence On The Rise In Ozarks

Share

This is a story and video about Domestic Violence and how domestic violence cases are on the rise in Springfield, Missouri.

It describes the victim was in abusive marriage for 12 years and didn’t recognize how dangerous it was.

Police and community officials are trying to address this issue throughout the city and state. The number and severity of domestic violence cases has risen dramatically since 2012. We don’t know whether that is because there is an increase in reporting or whether the actual number of cases has increased. Either way police are seeing that increase.

Officials say that domestic violence is very pervasive in Springfield. What they don’t say is that it’s pervasive everywhere.

Women everywhere are faced with the possibility of sexual assaults at any time, any place. You would think a home is safer. Wrong! Domestic Violence presents nearly a 30% chance of a woman being sexually assaulted.

The best way that she can avoid that is to get a self-defense product such as a pepper spray or a stun gun. We actually recommend pepper sprays, especially ones that are on a KEYCHAIN because they will be with you all the time.

College Sexual Assaults Often Go Unreported; Change On The Way?

Share

Although the Federal Clery Act requires U.S. colleges to document and disclose all sexual assaults that occur on their campuses annually, universities can only tabulate reported incidents; and sexual assaults often go unreported. To address the problem, a number of students and experts on sexual violence are pushing universities to conduct comprehensive student surveys.

While some schools have been accused of manipulating the statistics — as alleged in complaints against the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and the University of Southern California — the major obstacle for most universities lies in the nature of the crime itself.

The rest of the story is HERE.

Multiple studies have shown sexual violence to be an under-reported crime. It’s estimated that between one-quarter and one-fifth of college women experience sexual assault, but fewer than half of victims ever report it to authorities, according to the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network.

According to one 2000 Bureau of Justice Statistics/Department of Justice study, fewer than 5 percent of completed and attempted rapes of women in college were reported to law enforcement officials, and that number drops still lower for other forms of sexual assault.

Young Women And Relationship Violence

Share

About 10 years ago the Liz Claiborne Corporation did a comprehensive study about teenage dating and the perils associated with it such as assaults that are normally connected to domestic violence. Recently there was another study done and the conclusions and facts presented were almost exactly the same. What does that mean? That nothing has gotten better for young women in their dating relationships!

Teenage girls are at a high risk of relationship violence. Some of the facts are:

1. 15% of high school girls reports being abused by their boyfriends;

2. Date rape which accounts for 70% of sexual assaults reported by adolescents in college;

3. 38% of those are between 14 and 17;

4. One in three teen dating relationships has a physical aggression component.

5. Nearly 75% girls have reported some sort of emotional partner violence.

One of the points raised in this most recent study is that young women really have no place to learn what is normal and what is not normal in a dating relationship. When these young women talk to their friends many of them are experiencing the same thing so they tend to think that abuse is a normal thing.

Recently Pres. Obama announced from the White House the formation of the new task force looking into sexual assaults on college campuses. Those statistics haven’t changed much over the years either, with one for women being a target for sexual assault in her four years at a University.

Has your daughter been involved in a dating relationship that went bad?

Some signs that your daughter may be in an abusive relationship include:

1. Not spending time with her usual friends;

2. Fewer friends on Facebook;

3. More withdrawn personality or less bubbly and engaged than usual;

4. Changes in appearance style or activities;

5. Obvious physical signs of abuse;

6. Defensive, angry attitude about current physical status.

For young women we recommend that they take a basic self-defense training course to learn how to defend themselves in just about any situation and then obtain and learn how to use a self-defense product such as a pepper spray.

Cold Weather Contributes To Domestic Violence

Share

Experts in the domestic violence field report that from November through January they get more incidents of domestic violence than any other time of the year. They credit a variety of factors including “tax returns, lay-offs, and other factors can stress many people out. Families gather during the holiday and winter, and with the cold weather, many are forced to stay indoors. This can cause aggression and fights.”

Read the rest of the story HERE.

Cold weather as contributing factor to domestic violence? Cold weather does not cause domestic violence. However, the cold weather can keep people from going outside. Families may be forced to talk about sensitive issues, and this can lead to domestic violence.

Reis says victims of family violence need to have an escape plan in case there is an emergency.

“Hide a bag at a friend’s house, or a trusted person’s house,” Reis advises. “You should put your birth certificate, driver’s license, check account number, spare set of keys and clothes in that bag. Many women come to our shelter in middle of the night without any of those things. Usually the victims come without shoes or in their pajamas, so you should have those things prepared.”

Sabre Pepper Spray-The New Police Standard In New Zealand

Share

“New Zealand Police look set to buy thousands of canisters of a potent new pepper spray that is more than six times stronger than the one currently used.

Sabre Red from America looks just like the old spray on the police tool belt, but is more likely to stop offenders in their tracks.

“Our current spray, which we’ve been using for over ten years now, we’ve seen a leveling off in its effectiveness,” said Inspector Jason Ross.

A trial of the new spray has just wrapped up in the Bay of Plenty. It has been used to douse almost one person each day over the past six months.

“It’s been used about 150 times throughout the trial and feedback – anecdotal feedback – so far is very positive,” Mr Ross said.”

Read the whole story HERE

“Around 9,000 canisters of pepper spray are currently in circulation nationwide with police, but it is one of the lowest strengths available.

The spray currently used is just 10 times stronger than the Tabasco sauce you can get at the supermarket, compared to the new one, which is more than 60 times stronger.

The sting after being hit with the new spray lasts much longer, and it leaves a red mark on its target, which can be washed off.

Police Association president Greg O’Connor said the roll-out of the new spray is just New Zealand catching up.

“There is now a better product, and it means police don’t need to go further up the tactical framework, which means tasers and ultimately firearms,” he said.

Until the data from the trial is analyzed police cannot say if anyone was injured, but overall the new spray appears a lot more effective.

Police are also trying out a gel, which is more effective than a spray in bad weather.”

Now you can get the same Sabre Crossfire Spray that the New Zealand Police Department will be using. Sabre Red, in the United States, is one of the most popular self-defense products that women use for their personal safety and personal security.

Domestic Violence-Know The Signs

Share

“October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, which evolved from the first Day of Unity observed in October, 1981 by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. Its aim was to connect battered women’s advocates across the country who were working to end violence against women and their children. Today, a woman is assaulted or beaten every 9 seconds in the U.S., making the discussion on domestic violence and its impact on our society still vitally important.

According to the Domestic Violence Resource Center, one in four women (25 percent) has experienced domestic violence in her lifetime. And it’s not just physical abuse that accounts for these assaults; forms of domestic violence include emotional, psychological, verbal, physical and sexual. This includes physical and sexual assault, harassment, threats, name-calling, controlling behavior, stalking and more.

The rest of the story is HERE.

Abuse is not normal and should never be tolerated. Relationships are about respect, love and feeling safe to be yourself. You should never feel scared or threatened in a relationship, whether that threat comes from emotional manipulation or the fear of physical assault (neither is acceptable).

Despite any stereotypes or myths about domestic violence – like that abuse only happens to minorities, that some women deserve it, or that abusers are always easily identified – the truth is it can happen to anyone. But there are ways to identify the signs before it gets out of control, and there are plenty of resources if you’re feeling scared or alone.”

Emerson College Ignored Complaint of Sexual Assault

Share

Outrage is growing on the Boston campus of Emerson College. This comes after a complaint to the U.S. Department of Education over the college’s handling of a sexual assault report.

Students at Emerson are furious about how the school allegedly handles allegations of rape on campus, but now the school says they’re going to do better and make changes.

Emerson College says they can do better when it comes to sexual assaults on campus.

This comes after a student claims they took months to address her report of rape on campus, and during that time she was reportedly raped a second time by the same student in her dorm where they both lived. She says Emerson told her not to go to police, according to the Boston Globe.

The rest of the story is HERE.

And according to the Boston Globe, the victimized student says the school told her not to go to police.

“That should have been the first place they told her to go.”

Sarah LaFlamme says she, too, is a victim of sexual assault. It didn’t happen at Emerson College but she believes students need a network for help.

“I think it’s good to bring in people who have been assaulted to work with students and I think they have put something in place to do that.”

College President M. Lee Pelton said the school will hire a “sexual assault” advocate who will support sexual assault victims and oversee how the school responds to reports of abuse.

“Already this year, RA’s had implemented additional sexual assault training, and the college is taking it very seriously, and they are going to do better, we will do better in the future,” said senior Kara Rotschafer.

Campus Sexual Violence Exposed

Share

Sexual violence is as prevalent as ever on college campuses. On average one in 20 college females report being raped and one in four will be the victim of sexual assault during her academic career as an undergraduate, according to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center (NSVRC)

According to NSVRC, sexual assault does not only include rape, but any involuntary sexual activity that someone in coerced to engage in when they have not consented. Sexual assault on college campuses is evident and many efforts to prevent such violence have been put in action.

USD, being a smaller campus, reduces the risk of sexual assault but does not eliminate it altogether.

Nevertheless, Sophomore Sloane Smith feels that sexual violence is prevalent on any campus.

The rest of the story is HERE.

“The issue of rape and sexual violence is relevant whether not you are a male or female, partier or Friday night studier, on a big campus or a small campus,” Smith said. “USD is no exception to sexual violence.”

Despite statistics, many USD students, including junior Kami Shabaz feel relatively safe on USD campus.

Shabaz is fortunate never to have been victim of sexual violence, but many other female college students across the country have been less fortunate.

The Cleveland Rape Crisis Center said that every 21 hours a woman is raped on an American college campus. The study found that these women are normally in their first or second year of college. The report also said, “8 percent of men admit to committing acts that meet the legal definition of rape or attempted rape. Of these men who committed rape, 84 percent said that what they did was definitely not rape.”

Confusion on whether it was rape or consensual is often related to the consumption of alcohol.

Being intoxicated increases the chance of being raped by one and half percent, according to NSVRC. The Cleveland Center said men are more likely to think that a woman who drinks is more willing to engage in sexual behavior. Sarah Lawrence College did a study and determined that at least 50 percent of college students’ sexual assaults are associated with alcohol use. Their study showed that if a woman is drinking than she is perceived as being willing to have sex.

Sexual assault is most likely to occur on campus than off campus and is normally committed by someone the victim knows. The Sarah Lawrence College study of sexual violence said that 80 percent of rape victims know their attacker.

Young Women Learn Basic Self-Defense Skills

Share

This summer has seen a spate of attacks on women in Boston. In June, two young women were attacked around Mission Hill. Both managed to fight off their knife-wielding assailant. In July, in South Boston, three young women were attacked and beaten within a 19-hour period. One of them, Amy Lord, was kidnapped and killed.

When confronted by violence, how do women fight back? One program teaches self-defense through empowerment.

The Madison Park Development Corp. in Roxbury is offering an intensive self-defense course. Monique Blocker works for the housing development as a “VIP” — a violence intervention/prevention youth leader — and brought the classes to Roxbury.

You can read the whole story HERE.

Girls’ LEAP classes are now taught in the Cambridge Public Schools. The program has also expanded, through community partners, into other communities, including Boston, where it says those at highest risk for sexual assault are girls aged 10 to 14. Ballantyne said the curriculum is tailored with that in mind.

The class includes exercises using new skills, such as “the wrist breakaway” — how to get away when someone grabs you. It also reinforces life lessons, like walk with confidence.
