Make Personal Safety A Top Resolution This Year

Well another year has come and gone. As we embark on the new year, it is wise to reflect and review on the past year. Did we meet our goals and objectives? Personal safety is an area that is often overlooked. Are you vulnerable to a would-be criminal? Is your wife or children an easy target? Most of us find ourselves consumed by our day-to-day lives. The last thing on our minds is falling victim to an assault, robbery, rape or home invasion. Unfortunately, for many of us it only becomes a priority after we’ve been directly affected.

I challenge you to make personal safety a top resolution in 2016. Here are some tips to help you be successful.

  • Pay attention to your surroundings. Keep your eyes open and trust your gut feelings. If you feel something’s not right, it probably isn’t right
  • Stay in well lit and populated areas. Don’t even think about walking through an alley-way to save time.
  • Walk with confidence and purpose. Know where you are going and if you get lost, make it look like you know where you are. Don’t allow yourself to be easily surprised.
  • If you’re being followed, or see a person or group ahead you want to
avoid, make changes in your path. Cross the street, walk in another direction, or duck into a well populated place.
  • In public or social situations work on keeping an eye on your surroundings. Keep your hands free, eyes and ears open. Don’t allow yourself to become distracted by your smart phone or other activity that you loose touch with your surroundings.
  • Make eye contact. If you feel threatened or intimidated it’s natural to avoid eye contact. But looking someone straight in the face is the best deterrent. That eye contact may scare off a potential attacker because they fear you will be able to identify them.
  • Change things up often. If you are a walker, jogger or biker, it is best to change your route regularly. Plan out different routes and identify safe places you can go for help. If trouble arises, you can stop at these places and know you will be safe.
  • The “buddy system” works, use it. If at all possible, go places and do things in groups. If that’s not possible, there are several safety apps available that allow you to send contacts a text message with your location so they can track your safety throughout an activity. Some apps allow you to check-in or broadcast your current location to contacts through SMS messaging.

What happens when it’s too late. If you find yourself in a violent situation. Fight like your life depends on it. Having and using good quality pepper spray can stop a determined attacker quickly. Many law enforcement agencies consider pepper spray to be the most effective non-lethal personal security solution because of it’s ease of use and it’s high rate of effectiveness.

Pepper Spray for Self Defense

We live in the United States of America, the greatest Country in the world. Our fundamental right to bear arms is protected by The Second Amendment. The decision to maintain a gun in the home for self defense is a serious matter. The most important responsibility is ensuring that children cannot encounter loaded firearms. Anything less invites tragedy. When it comes to self defense options millions choose to carry a handgun, however, many others are not comfortable owning a handgun and instead look to less than lethal options.

The best less than lethal alternative for basic home and personal security is pepper spray.

Pepper spray, or oleoresin capsicum (OC), is used by law enforcement and corrections agencies across the United States to help subdue and arrest dangerous, combative, violent, or uncooperative subjects in a wide variety of scenarios. U.S. Department of Justice The Effectiveness and Safety of Pepper Spray

Professional law enforcement officers depend on pepper spray as a first line of defense because it works. The DOJ report referenced above conducted a 2 year study and found that when pepper spray was used there was a significant reduction in injuries to police officers from assaults, injuries to suspects from police use of force and excessive force complaints against the police.

Pepper spray provides you with effective protection at a safe distance. The ability to stop an attacker from 10 feet away is a huge plus. Pepper spray is the most practical self protection product available. It’s compact and convenient to carry just about anywhere. A small canister of pepper spray can provide protection against numerous threats. Most people don’t realize it but pepper spray is legal to carry in all 50 states (a handful have restrictions). Pepper spray is the great equalizer allowing a small petite would be victim the ability to protect themselves against a much larger and stronger attacker.

Why Pepper Spray Is an Effective Self-Defense Weapon

Share

Simply put, pepper spray makes sense as a self-defense weapon. The prevalence of crime is on the increase throughout the United States. In the five minutes or so it takes you to read this article 3 women will fall victim to sexual assault! We are all vulnerable. How will you protect yourself?

Pepper spray is an effective self-defense weapon that is both legal and non-lethal. Many of us are not comfortable carrying a handgun and even if you are, the legal liabilities can be life changing. In every self-defense scenario you will be better off with pepper spray than without.

Pepper spray acts as the “great equalizer” as it provides a smaller, physically weaker person the ability to defend themselves against a larger, stronger attacker. Pepper spray provides the ability to stop an attacker from a distance of 8-12 feet. In a self-defense situation, distance equals safety, so the ability to neutralize a potential attack is priceless.

The effects of pepper spray go to work almost immediately. The most aggressive attacker will feel the effects within seconds. Even individuals under the influence of pain masking drugs are affected. Spraying someone in the face with pepper spray causes the eyes to involuntarily close shut and the capillaries to swell causing temporary blindness. Even if an attacker can’t feel pain, they are much less dangerous if they can’t see.

Pepper spray goes to work on the respiratory system and wreaks havoc on breathing. The active ingredients cause inflammation within the respiratory system which makes breathing difficult. If you can’t breathe you can’t fight. Pepper spray is extremely painful when sprayed into the eyes, nose and mouth. The pain has been compared to having shards of glass in the eyes.

With any self-defense weapon, it’s important to practice and become familiar with your device. Pepper spray is available in different spray patterns and formulas, each with its own set of pro’s and con’s. If you opt for non-lethal self-defense you’ll be much better off in every scenario with pepper spray than without.

Domestic Violence Plan Announced

Share

This is a news story about how government officials, community partners courts, law enforcement and local communities and team together to announce the implementation of a comprehensive Domestic Violence Plan.

Domestic Violence is a growing problem across the nation. It is the leading cause of injury to women-more than car accidents, muggings, and rapes combined and the 7th leading cause of death. Over one in four women are victims of domestic violence.

The purpose of the plan is to “reduce the incidence of domestic violence and eliminate domestic violence homicides is based on a plan modeled after the successful practices of other communities where domestic homicides have been reduced to near zero.”

The plan is intended to improve communication and a clear focus on the mission to send a message that domestic violence is not tolerated. “The plan also includes the use of electronic monitoring that can track the offender 24/7 and alert the victim and law enforcement if the offender goes near the victim, allowing the victim time to implement her safety plan.”

Ankle bracelets have been standard practice in many communities with great success.

Women who are in a domestic abuse relationship should have an escape plan formulated as part of your exit strategy and all women should carry a self-defense product with them such as a pepper spray or stun gun.

One of the best ways to defend against assaults even domestic abuse assaults is with a self-defense product such as our Crossfire Gel Spray. which has an effective range of 20 feet and because the spray is concentrated gel there is less likely contamination when used indoors as in a domestic violence situation

U.S. News & World Report College Rankings And Sexual Assaults on Campus

Share

Here is an op-ed piece on Campus Sexual Assaults and U.S. News & World Report college rankings.

Several weeks ago a question was raised about U.S. News & World Report college rankings and whether or not they should include campus sexual assaults.

The U.S. News & World Report rankings are a hugely influential factor in how millions of people make college decisions every year.

“Brian Kelly, the editor of U.S. News & World Report, just announced that U.S. News will not include campus sexual-assault data in it’s annual college ranking this year, despite pleas from 12 members of Congress, citing the “unreliable” and “inconsistent” nature of the data. Moreover, even if better data were available, U.S. News would not include sexual assault information because:

Campus safety is not among the factors that U.S. News believes is directly tied to academic quality.”

This decision upset millions of readers.

The best way to defend yourself against any kind of assault anywhere is with a self-defense product such as a stun gun or a pepper spray. We always recommend pepper sprays that are on keychains because that way it is with you all the time.

Aussie Epidemic In Domestic Violence

Share

Here’s a story out of ABC news in Australia concerning what many are calling a Domestic Violence Epidemic.

The story goes on to say that domestic violence is it epidemic proportions and that it is reached the point where it is time to clear a national emergency.

“I think it’s about saying for once we are going to pull together all our resources and treat this in the way we would if it was a national disaster of any kind, like a flood or a bushfire, and deal with it head on.”

In Australia, domestic violence is the leading cause of death and injury in women under 45, with more than one woman murdered by her current or former partner every week.

There are young victims too, with more than one million children affected by domestic violence.

It accounts for 40 per cent of police time, the cost to the economy is $13.6 billion per year.

“Domestic and family violence is common. It’s [an] epidemic and it’s a national disgrace.”

Men need to wake up to the fact that it is a men’s problem … until they wake up to that fact, nothing’s going to change.

“What we now need to do is have that conversation with men, about how they can change that culture.”

White House Weighs In On Campus Sexual Assaults

Share

This is a story from Reuters news service about campus Sexual Assaults and how the White House is pressing U.S. Colleges and Universities to do more to curb these assaults.

Part of the national effort is to establish new website NotAlone.gov to help victims find resources and report crimes. This comes after a three-month study on how to curb sexual assaults on college campuses.

“Colleges and universities need to face the facts about sexual assault. No more turning a blind eye or pretending it doesn’t exist,” Vice President Joe Biden said in a statement released on Monday evening.

The White House said one in five women is sexually assaulted while attending college, most often in her first or second year of study. Usually the perpetrator is known to her and more often than not the assault goes unreported.

The new recommendations include encouraging schools to conduct a “climate survey” to identify the scope of the problem on their respective campuses, creating confidential places for victims to seek support, and initiating training programs for school officials who work with victims.

The website will provide resources for students including hotline numbers for mental health services and data on how to file complaints of abuse.

TIME: Campuses Called Hazardous Places

Share

In a recent cover story in Time.com on The Sexual Assault Crisis on American Campuses they labeled America’s campuses as hazardous places.

The truth is, for young women, particularly those who are 18 or 19 years old, just beginning their college experience, America’s campuses are hazardous places. Recent research shows that 1 in 5 women is the victim of an attempted or completed sexual assault during college.

That shocking number has students, parents and politicians questioning the way schools protect students and adjudicate the cases of sexual assault.

Many people are wondering why so few of these sexual assaults are even reported. It has been estimated that as few as one out of every 10 of these crimes is ever reported.

One of the contributing factors to this lack of reporting is the fact that the young women who were the victims have been drunk or high on drugs. That means they couldn’t remember what happened or give enough accurate details to make the report credible.

One thing is for sure that the best way young women can protect themselves anywhere but especially in a college environment is with a pepper spray that’s on a keychain.

Teen Dating Violence-An Epidemic?

Share

Nationally, 32 percent of college-aged women — and one in five girls age 12 to 15 — experience dating violence, officials said at the announcement.

But one survey showed that 81 percent of parents didn’t think teen dating violence was a problem or didn’t know if it was, said Cheryl Pytel, a member of the Interval House board.

You can read the rest of the story on Teen Dating Violence right here.

Teen dating should be discussed “the way you talk about alcohol, tobacco, texting and driving,” she said. “It should be that type of a conversation with parents, teachers, coaches, anyone who is involved with youth.”

Research also shows that children who grow up with domestic violence in their homes are more likely to abuse or to be the victims of such abuse later in life.

One of the best ways that young women can defend themselves against dating violence is with one of our Mace Pepper Sprays which can disable an assailant for as much as 45 minutes.

Sexual Assault On College Campuses

Share

This is an article out of a magazine that caters to teenagers about sexual assaults on college campuses. You can read the whole story HERE.

We have been writing this topic for close to 10 years now, but it’s finally starting to get some traction in support all the way up to the White House was Pres. Obama calling on schools across the country to address the problem. He created a task force known as the White House Council on women and girls.

At the same time that was happening there was a series of reports that begin to surface about sexual assaults that were handled poorly by the administrations of some of the nation’s most prestigious schools. The reports painted a grim picture of the problem on the national level. Of course, this isn’t news to many students. In fact, some have been working diligently within their schools for years in an effort to raise awareness about sexual assault and the struggles between victims and administrators.

“It’s positive and powerful that there’s now federal language specifically addressing sexual violence, because the prevalence and nature of these crimes requires specialized attention and was not adequately addressed by existing violent crime law.”

There have been many attempts over the years to legislate a solution. Many students have come to realize that they are the answer not the federal government.

New Law To Curtail Campus Sexul Assaults

Share

Here’s another story about how state legislators in Connecticut are trying to curtail campus sexual assaults. You can read the whole story HERE.

The bill requires institutions to permit anonymous reporting of assaults, promote bystander intervention, establish resource teams to review policies and create links with local crisis centers.

There’s a lot of frustration on college campuses about what appears to be the lack of support from state legislators on this issue. “There is a lot more that needs to be done, but it needs to be done by faculty, students and staff together. Until we change that culture, until we have those young men understand that sexual assault and date rape is unacceptable, we’ll have young women going through that suffering.”

“The new legislation was initiated in response to a lawsuit filed on behalf of a number of female students (both current and former) who allege that they were raped and/or sexually assaulted, and that they felt that the university violated their rights.”

Legislators agree that it is seriously in charge problem in that something has to be done. There are way too many sexual assaults. This bill creates an impact on a person who commits that sexual assault.

Tips For Assault Prevention

Share

Here is an interesting story and video about a self-defense instructor who teaches Assault Avoidance Tips. The main thing that he teaches women in his class is to act fast not think. The reason for this is simple: when you’re in a life or death situation, reaction times are critical. A few seconds lost thinking about what to do instead of reacting may cost you your life.

He has some simple tactics and tips to keep women safe in any kind of situation

• “Wear a purse that goes across your body, not over your shoulder.
• Keep pepper spray or a small pocket knife on your keys, and hold them as though you’re ready to attack.
• Walk with your hand inside your purse, so you can grab that spray as fast as possible.
• Other simple weapons to keep in your purse: A screwdriver, scissors, or even a pencil.
• Walk with scissors dangling in your hands, no one will think anything but the potential attacker.
• Buy a small gun, one that can clip to your bra and aim for the groin area.”

Campus Sexual Assault Epidemic

Share

Here’s a story out of the Los Angeles times where Rep. Jackie Speier (D-Hillsborough) called assaults on young women in colleges a Sexual Assault Epidemic.

“The prevalence of sexual assault on campuses is an epidemic,” Speier said in an interview. “It’s going to take money, resources, enforcement and a dramatic change in the culture” to fix.

Speier said research suggests that one in five women are sexually assaulted on campuses but that nearly two-thirds of universities shirk their legal duty to address the cases. Yet, she said national momentum is growing to take stronger action against the problem.

That as you know is only the tip of the iceberg. Fewer than 10% of all sexual assaults actually get reported according to one study. Part of the reason is that so many young women are drunk on alcohol or out of it from drugs that they actually came remember what happened.

Another part of the puzzle is said the assailants are known to victims in 90% of the cases because they are classmates or live together in the same dorm and see each other virtually every day.

Domestic Violence Impact On Children

Share

A new piece of research about to be published in the journal Psychology of Violence tells us that the chances of intervention in a case where a child watches domestic violence going on between her parents are far less than most of us would hope for.

“In more than a third of the cases that her team researched, physical injury occurred yet only one in four cases resulted in a police report. Children were hurt in about one in 75 cases. There is a link between witnessing domestic violence and childhood mental health disorders such as anxiety, depression, becoming a victim in teenage dating and diminished success at school. There is also a link between domestic violence and bullying.”

The research also tells us that we must let go of the notion that domestic violence is a curse of the lower incomes and rooted in poverty. Her research found that 28% occurred in households with annual incomes under $20,000; 30% in households earning $20,000-50,000; 18% in the $50,000-75,000 bracket and 24% with incomes about $75,000. Domestic violence is an equal opportunity curse it would seem.

Sexual Assault As Normal?

Share

Here’s a story from the Huffington Post about perceptions that young women have about Sexual Assaults.

It raises one potential answer to why so many sexual assault crimes-nearly 250,000 a year ago-go unreported 60% of the time. The answer is many women do not see themselves as victims.

A sociologist at Marquette University analyzed interviews with 100 girls between the ages of three and 17 who may have experienced sexual assault. Overwhelmingly, their accounts indicated sexual violence has been normalized in their communities and they considered harassment an everyday part of life rather than a criminal act.

The same study identified several reasons why these assaults are not reported including; shame fear of retribution and mistrust of authority. “The most alarming conclusion, however, is that young women regard sexual violence against them as normal. Moreover, the girls interviewed believed that men ‘can’t help it’ and perceived ‘everyday harassment and abuse as normal male behavior.”

“One participant — only 13 years old — said harassment is standard in her school: ‘They grab you, touch your butt and try to, like, touch you in the front, and run away, but it’s OK, I mean… I never think it’s a big thing because they do it to everyone.'”

This study may account for many factors when it comes to sexual assault on women in high school and college and may even be a forerunner to domestic violence.

People in position of authorities like teachers and parents must teach young men and young women that sexual violence is not acceptable before media and community norms give the impression that it is.
