Pepper Spray For Bears Is More Effective Than A Handgun

In a fact sheet put out by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service entitled “bear spray versus bullets”, the fact sheet pronounces that law enforcement agents for the service have experience that supports the reality that pepper spray for bears is more effective than a handgun. Based on their investigations of human bear encounter since 1992, “persons encountering bears and defending themselves with firearms suffer injury about 50% of the time. Persons defending themselves with pepper spray escaped injury most of the time” and those who were injured experienced shorter duration attacks and less severe injuries.

Another confirmation of this is from Canadian bear biologist Dr. Stephen Herrero who did research of his own. His conclusion: “a person’s chance of incurring serious injury from a charging bear doubles when bullets are fired versus when bear spray is used.” Need we say any more?

We have been advising people to carry bear spray whenever they go into the backcountry for camping, hiking, fishing, hunting or just being in the outdoors. When you are in bear country you need to be ultra-vigilant because a bear attack can happen suddenly and without warning. But generally speaking bears are shy creatures and avoid human contact.

Knowing how to use pepper spray for bears is another matter. This 9.2 ounce canister can spray up to 35 feet away and empties completely in about five seconds. If you feel an attack is imminent, empty this Sabre brand frontiersman spray to create a wall of mist between you and the bear. That way if he continues to advance on you he will walk right into it. Bears have extremely sensitive noses and will be repelled by the smell of bear spray. The 2.0% CRC is the strongest allowable by the EPA for a bear spray. It is 40% stronger than some competitors making it the strongest bear pepper spray for bears on the marketplace.

From a recent article about what to look for in a bear spray.

“Two grizzly-caused deaths near Yellowstone National Park this summer, combined with celebrity zookeeper Jack Hanna’s bear spray encounter in Glacier National Park and the recent PBS documentary recounting the 1967 “Night of the Grizzlies” incident, have made bear protection a priority for backcountry visitors.

“Everyone sees the price of the big cans, and they ask, ‘Can’t I get a smaller one?’ ” Army Navy Economy Store manager Eric Langhammer said. This starts the ongoing discussion of what bear spray is and is not.

The first issue is that while bear sprays are a kind of pepper spray, not all pepper sprays are bear sprays. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency certifies only four manufacturers (including two in Montana) to make “bear spray.”

“When you say pepper spray, it is misleading,” said Tim Lynch of Universal Defense Alternative Products, the Bozeman-based bear spray maker. “Law enforcement spray is pepper spray, but it isn’t considered bear spray. You want people to pick up the correct product.”

The difference involves what’s in the can and how it’s meant to be used. Chemicals like Mace and other tear gas-type sprays have little effect on bears. The ingredient you’re looking for is oleoresin of capsicum, an extremely potent essence of chili peppers.

The second part involves how the spray is delivered. Bear sprays aren’t meant to be squirted directly on an oncoming bear. Instead, the idea is to throw up a misty wall of irritants for the bear to run into.

“When a bear decides to charge, it’s gathering information as it charges,” said Chuck Bartlebaugh, who heads the Be Bear Aware campaign for the Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee. “What it hears, sees, smells – it’s all part of the charge. Bear spray removes their focus. They don’t like losing their ability to smell and see. They don’t like the whooshing noise and the orange cloud.”

Some thought should go into the spraying action, too. Bartlebaugh demonstrated how one-handed use of a canister’s thumb-trigger tends to tilt the spray upward. The suggested tactic is to aim flat or down at a space between you and the bear, preferably at least 25 feet away. That helps ensure the bear runs into the cloud instead of under it.

Bear spray canisters fire a shotgun pattern cloud that travels out like long-distance wasp spray. But sprayers still need to be aware of wind direction and rain, which can limit the spray’s range. Some of the manufacturers are still disputing how long and far the cans should discharge.

Nevertheless, a 2006 study found that only 2 percent of those using bear spray in a bear attack were injured, compared to 50 percent of those who depended on a firearm to defend themselves.

“We have a whole generation of people thinking it’s OK to approach bears,” Bartlebaugh said. “In shark country, if you holler ‘shark,’ everyone gets out of the water. In the bear world, if you holler ‘bear,’ everybody runs into the woods.”

Keep your eye on the ball and get the right product that will protect you.

Bears Are Getting Ready For Hibernation-With Your Food

With the recent bear attacks around British Columbia come warnings that at this time of year the animals are trying to fatten up for their dormant winter months.

In Whistler on Sunday, a black bear had to be destroyed after it got into a home and knocked down a resident.

In another incident, a grizzly bear badly mauled a hunter in the northeastern town of Hudson’s Hope, a tiny community about 100 kilometres west of Fort St. John.

In both cases the bear was trying to access human food.

The rest of the story is HERE.

“We are coming in to the highest conflict time of the year,” said Whistler’s Sylvia Dolson, the executive director of the Get Bear Smart Society.

Dolson said as the bears try to bulk up for winter, they will come down from the mountains looking for an easy food source.

“The real critical thing is bears will go after household garbage, bird seed, pet food, fruit trees and when there is a human food source, that is when the trouble starts,” she said.

The shooting of the black bear in Whistler happened after the bear entered a home in Whistler Kay Heights and then became trapped inside. It caused considerable damage and knocked one of the residents down as it tried to get it out.

“Once they get into a house they can do quite a bit of damage,” added Dolson.

“The worst is when they figure out that food is in the home,” she said. “When they know the food is in there it is a huge problem.”

She said a black bear at this time of year is foraging to fill up on about 20,000 calories a day.

“At this point they are in an exaggerated eating mode,” she said.

This summer, a black bear had to be killed in Whistler in July, and Dolson said the number is low because the bears had a good food sources higher up in the mountains.

It is rare that bears attack humans unless the animal feels threatened or is being territorial. However, a girl who is 12-years old and was jogging in Michigan became the latest attack victim in a number of bear attacks. The attacks have been in five states with seven people injured since last Thursday.

Officials are in the process of running tests on one bear killed by authorities to see if it is the same one responsible for mauling Abby Wetherell Thursday evening.

The youngster is from Michigan and was on her nightly jog when a black bear ambushed her. Her mother said while the girl was jogging on her way home, the bear come from nowhere and attacked her.

The girl was knocked to the ground and when she tried to get up the bear started to charge her.

The rest of the story is HERE.

She was unsure what to do at that time since she was severely injured, so she played dead.

Officials also announced that attacks had taken place in Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado and as far north as Alaska.

The incident in Michigan was very uncommon said officials. It is estimated that up to 10,000 bears live in Michigan but each year there are only on average two incidents of human to bear, said animal officials in the state.

A member of the Department of Natural Resources in Michigan said that in general black bears are fearful of all human and usually will leave if they are aware a human are nearby.
