Domestic Violence is a growing problem across the nation. It is the leading cause of injury to women-more than car accidents, muggings, and rapes combined and the 7th leading cause of death. Over one in four women are victims of domestic violence.

The purpose of the plan is to “reduce the incidence of domestic violence and eliminate domestic violence homicides is based on a plan modeled after the successful practices of other communities where domestic homicides have been reduced to near zero.”

Aussie Epidemic In Domestic Violence

Share

Here’s a story out of ABC news in Australia concerning what many are calling a Domestic Violence Epidemic.

The story goes on to say that domestic violence is it epidemic proportions and that it is reached the point where it is time to clear a national emergency.

“I think it’s about saying for once we are going to pull together all our resources and treat this in the way we would if it was a national disaster of any kind, like a flood or a bushfire, and deal with it head on.”

In Australia, domestic violence is the leading cause of death and injury in women under 45, with more than one woman murdered by her current or former partner every week.

There are young victims too, with more than one million children affected by domestic violence.

It accounts for 40 per cent of police time, the cost to the economy is $13.6 billion per year.

“Domestic and family violence is common. It’s [an] epidemic and it’s a national disgrace.”

Men need to wake up to the fact that it is a men’s problem … until they wake up to that fact, nothing’s going to change.

“What we now need to do is have that conversation with men, about how they can change that culture.”

Domestic Violence Is An Equal Opportunity Destroyer

Share

A recent study conducted by the American Psychological Association contradicted stereotypes that domestic violence is more prevalent in low-income or minority households. You can read the whole story HERE.

Basically it showed violent incidents crossed economic lines with near equal percentages in all income brackets. Families of all races and ethnicities were also affected and three of every four perpetrators were male. “Family violence definitely cuts across all society’s segments and income levels and has a serious impact on children, the nationwide study indicates.

“The study interviewed children who had witnessed domestic violence. Three in four children saw the violence, 21 percent heard it and 3 percent saw the injuries later. The violence included beating, hitting and kicking a parent or caregiver. One in 75 cases reported the child was physically hurt during a violent attack on their abused parent. All experienced fear and anxiety, and more than half said they were afraid someone would be hurt badly. The children indicated the violence was one of their scariest experiences ever, according to the study published online April 7 in the APA journal Psychology of Violence.”

Domestic Violence Impact On Children

Share

A new piece of research about to be published in the journal Psychology of Violence tells us that the chances of intervention in a case where a child watches domestic violence going on between her parents are far less than most of us would hope for.

“In more than a third of the cases that her team researched, physical injury occurred yet only one in four cases resulted in a police report. Children were hurt in about one in 75 cases. There is a link between witnessing domestic violence and childhood mental health disorders such as anxiety, depression, becoming a victim in teenage dating and diminished success at school. There is also a link between domestic violence and bullying.”

The research also tells us that we must let go of the notion that domestic violence is a curse of the lower incomes and rooted in poverty. Her research found that 28% occurred in households with annual incomes under $20,000; 30% in households earning $20,000-50,000; 18% in the $50,000-75,000 bracket and 24% with incomes about $75,000. Domestic violence is an equal opportunity curse it would seem.

Domestic Violence Reviews

Share

Here is a story out of Jacksonville about reviews of Domestic Violence cases that occurs in Georgia.

According to an in-depth review of the cases conducted by prosecutors and other experts one out of every six Georgians killed as a result of domestic violence has sought help from a shelter or safe house.

Nearly 100 cases have been subjected to these intense reviews. Looking at all of them, the authors of the latest report identified some major elements that seem to correlate.

For instance, roughly one of every four murder victims began their relationship with their killer while still a teenager. And almost all of the victims had decided to leave the relationship or were considering it, what experts call the most dangerous moment. Only 58% of the perpetrators had a job.

The question is why these victims still died after going to the trouble to seek out assistance.

“Limited financial resources can be the single greatest barrier to leaving an abusive relationship.”

Domestic violence does not discriminate based on age, economic status, race, religion or education and impacts not only its victims, but those who witness it.

One in four women will be victims of physical, emotional, psychological, sexual or financial abuse at some point in her lifetime.

Escape To Freedom Or Domestic Abuse?

Share

Here is an article about Domestic Abuse and the decision that just about everyone in a domestic violence situation has to make. Do you try and escape to freedom or put up with the domestic abuse?
It may seem like a simple and obvious answer-escape! But for everyone involved in a domestic violence situation is not easy.

“To escape the violence, there are some factors that should be considered. Safety should always be a consideration. There are many women’s groups that are available to help. There is a twenty-four hour hotline for victims in most cities. Domestic violence awareness is growing and society has created resources for those who are being victimized. The victims will have support, therapy and a safe environment that will help to make it possible to escape to freedom and start a new life.”

Some researchers believe that the abuse is a learned behavior. They have stated that children who have witnessed any domestic violence while growing up, will become abusive when they grow up. Another theory is that society is male dominated and men see themselves as being in charge of women. This allows the men to be able to control women and view them as inferior. Mental illness could also be a possible cause of abuse. However, these theories have not been proven for all abusers. While some abusers do fit into one of the theories, each theory has examples of abusers who do not fit the scenario.

The escape from domestic violence will possibly feel like it is overwhelming and difficult at times. It is an abrupt change in behavior for a victim who has been mentally and physically trampled on and terrorized. Practicing the escape mentally, as much as possible, has been shown to be especially helpful.

Recently a survey showed that 22% of all Americans were victims of domestic violence, obviously the majority of those are women. Women who are in a domestic abusive relationship should have an escape plan formulated as part of her exit strategy and all women should carry a self-defense product with them such as a pepper spray or stun gun.

One of the best ways to defend against assaults even domestic abuse assaults is with a self-defense product such as our WildFire Pepper Spray which can immobilize an attacker for as much as 45 minutes.

Domestic Violence-Could It Happen To You?

Share

We saw a headline recently where a recent survey conducted during Domestic Violence month reported that 98% of adults in California believe that domestic violence can happen to anyone. Statistics of all kinds back that up. Domestic violence crosses all racial, ethnic, age, religious belief, social and economic barriers.

There are a wide variety of reasons why domestic violence is so under reported in the first place. Among them are shame and fear of reprisal, not just from the spouse but you can include a spouse’s family. Until recently there was plenty of anecdotal evidence that showed reporting a domestic violence assault rarely got the attention that it deserved. So you can add that to the mix of the reasons why it wasn’t reported.

When you look to the causes for domestic violence they are as varied as you can possibly get. Chief among them are economic conditions. Disagreements and arguments over finances in a family cause a great deal of stress, which frequently leads to physical confrontations including murder. Poverty, low education levels, social status and mental illness all follow suit as possible reasons or causes for domestic violence.

What can women do to prevent an assault in a domestic violence situation? To this day, the best way to prevent an assault in any kind of a situation is with some type of self-defense products such as pepper spray or a stun gun. They can disable an assailant-even a spouse-for as much as 45 minutes allowing you time to escape a dangerous situation and seek help. Pepper sprays, in particular, are legal in all jurisdictions with very few restrictions.

After all, we are talking about an assault which can and has led to serious injury, including death. You have a right to defend yourself in any way that you can.

We recommend this Sabre brand Stop Strap Spray because if it is taken from you it cannot be used against you.

Hurdle In Domestic Violence

Share

Domestic violence in a relationship is about as difficult a situation to handle as any. It is fraught with hurdles. This story is about one Domestic Violence Hurdle that typifies the problems with domestic violence.

It essentially talks about police involvement.

“When a police officer responds to a (domestic violence) call, the first thing he or she does is to separate the people involved and try to piece together what happened. The officers then attempt to discover who the main aggressor is in the situation. Ninety-nine percent of the time, that person is the male, but he and other officers have also seen females who instigate the violence.

Many times the victims of domestic violence do not cooperate with the police. Whether it’s because they are still in love with the aggressor or because the aggressor is the victim’s only source of income, there are many victims who do not want to press charges against their abusers and will not testify against them in court.

The question then becomes why do so many victims back away from filing charges when the police show up? Why do women choose to stay with their abusers rather than go out on their own and live a violence free life?

Research shows that it can take as many as seven attempts to leave a domestic violence situation before they actually leave.

Among the many internal and external factors play a role in the person’s choice to remain in an abusive situation are threats made against the victim or family members, cultural or religious beliefs, and a lack of resources such as a place to live or access to a stable income. Internally, the most consistent thing is that they suffer from poor self-image and confidence, which is what the abuser preys on.

The question for so many women is it easier to stay and put up with the abuse or leave? It is not easy to leave.
There are ways to identify the signs before it gets out of control, and there are plenty of resources if you’re feeling scared or alone.

Among many other things women need are nonlethal self-defense weapons.

This Sabre Pepper Spray is on a keychain and has a range of 10 feet with a ballistic stream delivery which reduces the chance for blowback.

Domestic Violence Cases Cause Squeeze On Shelter Space

Share

This is a story from a St. Louis television station that is reporting a shortage of shelter space for women because that an increase in Domestic Violence.

Shelters are particularly busy in winter time and this winter has been one of the most difficult and challenging pushing people to the edge.

There is no particular explanation anybody can come up with for the increase in domestic violence. There has been no increase in resources for shelters for women which causes a squeeze on space.

The latest numbers show for every one victim who got into a shelter, two were turned away.

A typical stay in a shelter is at least a month.

Nationwide domestic violence affects nearly 30% of all women and some categories of women it’s much higher. For example, a woman who has a disability has a 40% chance of being abused; a homeless woman has a 63% chance; and a homeless woman with children who report domestic abuse is at 92%.

Assaults On Women

Share

This is a story from the Blackpool Gazette in the United Kingdom about Assaults On Women.

The gist of the story is that, on average, a woman will be hit or threatened by a partner 35 times before she reports it to the authorities.

“Historically domestic abuse is a hidden crime. What happens within four walls, stays within four walls.”

The abuse does not have to be physical it can be emotional verbal or psychological abuse to have the same degrading impact.

One reason that women put up with it for so long is because they fear they have no option and that there is no place to go. With their shelters all over the place and help from professionals.

Another form of abuse is being overly protective and possessive, preventing you from leading a normal lifestyle.

“It is a difficult area to deal with, but there are a number of reasons why people don’t report, or change their mind, which we have to have an understanding of – and we do have an understanding of.

“We are trained to recognize those signs. It can be coercion, it can be ongoing threats of violence. There are a number of reasons why victims change their mind after reporting and although it does frustrate the process, we understand the reasons behind it.”

Domestic Violence-The Secret Killer

Everyone knows about domestic violence as a criminal issue. But this article by Forbes magazine talks about it in a social, business and health context.

Read the whole story from Forbes magazine HERE.

The article makes the argument that “domestic violence reduces productivity leads to absenteeism and drives up health care costs” costing an estimated $8.3 billion was higher medical expenses and lost productivity.

“Nearly a quarter of employed women report that domestic violence has affected their work performance at some point in their lives. Each year, an estimated 8 million days of paid work is lost in the U.S. because of domestic violence” according to the article.

We’ve seen some progress since then, but the silence remains deafening. Every manager or business owner has a role to play in domestic violence if for no other reason than to improve the level of productivity of their business.

One of the best ways that women can defend themselves in a domestic abuse situation is with a self-defense product such as this Sabre brand StopStrap Pepper Spray that has a 10% concentration of oleoresin capsicum with a stop strap that prevents the spray from being used against you, should it be taken away in a struggle.

Domestic Violence On The Rise In Ozarks

This is a story and video about Domestic Violence and how domestic violence cases are on the rise in Springfield, Missouri.

It describes the victim was in abusive marriage for 12 years and didn’t recognize how dangerous it was.

Police and community officials are trying to address this issue throughout the city and state. The number and severity of domestic violence cases has risen dramatically since 2012. We don’t know whether that is because there is an increase in reporting or whether the actual number of cases has increased. Either way police are seeing that increase.

Officials say that domestic violence is very pervasive in Springfield. What they don’t say is that it’s pervasive everywhere.

Women everywhere are faced with the possibility of sexual assaults at any time, any place. You would think a home is safer. Wrong! Domestic Violence presents nearly a 30% chance of a woman being sexually assaulted.

The best way that she can avoid that is to get a self-defense product such as a pepper spray or a stun gun. We actually recommend pepper sprays, especially ones that are on a KEYCHAIN because they will be with you all the time.

Domestic Violence, Drugs And Alcohol

Share

This is a story about Domestic Violence specifically in an area south west of Colorado Springs in the mountains. Domestic violence, in the Colorado Domestic Violence Benchbook, is defined as “one partner’s effort to control the other partner using a variety of tactics that may involve both criminal or non-criminal acts.” Such acts can include assault, arson, murder, burglary, kidnapping, threats and stalking.

Domestic violence behaviors include verbal harassment or criminal mischief, for example when a suspect tears up a house or destroys property.

“Ninety-five percent of domestic violence cases involve the use of drugs or alcohol. We also handle more domestic violence cases in winter, probably because people are confined. Plus, often domestic violence stems from financial issues. In the winter, some people are working less or not at all.”

Ending domestic abuse and sexual assault against women may be a pipe dream, but women need to learn how to defend themselves-which is reality.

Teen Dating Violence Month

Share

“The life of a teen is hard enough without adding an abusive relationship into the equation. But that’s the situation an estimated 1 in 3 teenagers will find themselves in during these life-shaping years.”

February has been designated teen dating violence month in an effort to draw attention to a growing problem that teens themselves do not necessarily recognize because not all abusive relationships involve a component of physical harm

Because of all the social media, cell phones and everything is much more difficult for teens to get away from an abuser. And because more than likely they go to the same school even if there is a restraining order they still may have to face each other every day.

Schools are responsible for creating a non-hostile environment but not necessarily enforcing a restraining order.

One of the best ways that young women can defend themselves against a dating assault is with the self-defense product such as one of our keychain pepper sprays that can incapacitate an assailant long enough for you to get away and escape a dangerous situation.

And one of the best is the Fox Labs Hard Case Spray.

Domestic Violence On The Rise In Las Vegas

Share

There was a story recently out of Las Vegas, Nevada that talked about the rise in domestic violence in that city. So far this year five homicides involving domestic violence have happened in the Las Vegas area. In 2013, 32% of all homicides were a direct result of domestic violence. One officer from the Las Vegas Family Crimes Bureau said that a lot of factors are beyond the Police Department’s control and that tensions run high in domestic violence cases and law enforcement has to get in the middle of it. He blames the high rate of domestic violence on the transient population of the city and the 9% unemployment rate.

Police statistics show that close to 48% of all women in Las Vegas will be subjected to some form of domestic violence. That is much higher than the national average which is closer to 30%.

“The economy is a huge factor,” he said. “Financially, people are struggling, and that just adds more stress. Relationships are already stressful enough. Throw in some of these extra factors like a lack of money, being foreclosed upon and not knowing where you’re gonna live, those are huge factors and lead to a lot of our calls.”
