Mail Theft Tips

Share

The National Sheriffs Association which is the group behind the neighborhood watch program puts out a variety of personal safety tips as well as home security tips including these mail theft tips.

One of the most popular ways for thieves to steal your identity is through your mailbox.

1. Don’t leave outgoing mail in an unlocked mailbox.

2. Take your mail to a blue collection box or your local post office and don’t leave your mail in a collection box that is full.

3. Pick up your mail right away after it’s delivered.

4. Get a locked mailbox or convert your unlocked box to the lockable type and make sure that the mail slot is big enough for the letter carrier to insert your mail. Your letter carrier cannot pick up mail from this type of box.

5. Have regular income checks deposited electronically into your bank account via direct deposit.

6. If you are expecting credit cards, checks or other valuable mail and don’t get it, promptly contact the senders.

7. If you see suspicious activity on your street promptly call 911 and report it to police.

8. You might want to “opt out” of receiving pre-approved credit and insurance offers from the credit bureau mailing lists by calling 1-888-5OPTOUT (1-888-567-8688) or by visiting online at www.optoutprescreen.com.

If you have a Security Surveillance System like the one shown here, you may want to aim one of the cameras towards your mailbox for added protection.

By following these tips and using common sense, you can lessen your chances of being a victim of mail theft and possible identity theft. Getting your identity stolen is bad enough, trying to get the damage done to your credit is a nightmare.

Combat ‘Door Knock’ Robberies With Homeowner Camera Systems

In a story out of San Francisco “Police are reporting a big surge in so-called “door knock burglaries” all over the Bay Area. That’s when thieves knock on your door and if you don’t answer, they break in. But now, more and more homeowners are catching these guys on camera to help police. 7 On Your Side found out more about how a surveillance system can help keep your family safe.

It’s always been homeowners who are surprised by burglars. Now, more and more, it’s the burglars who are shocked when they find out their crimes were just caught on camera. Surveillance cameras scare off intruders and they lead to arrests. So we decided to show how you can protect your home with video surveillance.

Some of the crimes captured on camera are stunning. In one, a team of burglars was caught on camera in San Jose. A woman clutching a baby was seen on camera knocking on the front door. No one answered, so her partners broke into the back of the home.

Another video showed burglars in San Leandro who never knew a camera was watching as they cased a house, then quietly pulled up a car, and wrenched open the back window.

In another case, two men kicked their way into an El Cerrito home only to realize a camera had captured their crime. One tried to knock it out, but it was too late.”

Handyman Caught On Video In Theft Of $70,000

“A suspicious Sanford homeowner installed video cameras and caught her handyman stealing $70,000 in jewelry, cash and other personal belongings, police said.

Mary Pflueger told Sanford police that on Oct. 11 or 12, approximately $400-$500 in cash and a digital camera went missing from her home.

Pflueger installed two hidden cameras inside her home on Oct. 27 because she suspected her 53-year-old handyman Philip Liles had been stealing her things — including a Tiffany & Co necklace valued at $6,100, according to a report.

Video footage later showed Liles taking items from the safe inside her home. The police report included a list of more than 30 stolen items, including $500 in cash, necklaces, rings, earrings and bracelets.

Sanford police monitored the camera outside of 59-year-old Pflueger’s home Friday, when Liles returned to do yard work. The camera recorded him opening a safe and removing two $50 bills.

“This time, the Sanford Police” were waiting for him, a news release said, and Liles was arrested at the scene.

He is charged with burglary of an occupied dwelling, burglary of an unoccupied dwelling, dealing in stolen property, false ownership to secondhand dealer, grand theft and petty theft.

Police recovered some of Pflueger’s stolen items at a local pawn shop.

‘Knock-knock’ Burglaries Rising

Share

“Knock-knock” burglaries, where criminals target homes they think are empty, are on the rise. Security cameras have helped investigators catch some of these intruders.

In one case in which a team of burglars were caught on camera, a woman holding a baby is seen knocking on the front door. No one answers. Her partners then break into the home through the back.

In another case, two men were seen on camera kicking their way into a home. They then suddenly realize a camera just captured their crime. One of the men tried to knock it out, but it was too late.

“It’s a pretty simple way to commit a burglary,” said LAPD Commander Andy Smith.

The LAPD has arrested dozens of people suspected of committing so-called “knock knock” robberies in the San Fernando Valley and West Los Angeles. The thieves are in and out in seconds.

Calvin LaPorte Anderson has installed cameras at dozens of homes just this year as more and more homeowners use surveillance to catch thieves and vandals. Forget the grainy pictures of the past. Today’s high definition cameras clearly show faces.

And many of these cameras will send you live video of the break-ins — as they are happening — to your phone, tablet or computer.
“I saw the young lady came into my driveway,” he said.

While Hasan was at work, his camera detected motion and sent an alert to his smartphone. Someone just entered his property. He downloaded the video and saw the postman deliver a package to the front porch.

Of course, any surveillance camera will help scare off intruders.

“When somebody sees a camera, they’re more likely to turn around,” said Anderson.

More than likely you cannot get your own police department to cut down on home burglaries in your area but you can get some Home Burglar Alarms that act as an effective deterrent if somebody should break you to your home.

Another idea is to install some Fake Security Cameras at your house. Nothing says stay away from my property better than a security camera and no one can tell a fake one from the real thing.

A burglary victim provided crucial evidence to Oklahoma City Police thanks to his home surveillance camera.

This is the latest example of how personal security systems have helped metro police in their investigations, even though Blayne Jewell originally bought his camera for wildlife.

The only things the camera has caught are burglars.

“I knew my camera was on and I checked it and there were two kids right there walking down my driveway,” said Jewell.
Last month, Jewell came home and found his door kicked in.

“The door knob was busted off. The door is creased right there where they had kicked it, broke the door knob, broke the door jam,” Jewell explained.

His camera has a motion detector, so Jewell knew exactly four minutes passed from the time the guys stepped onto his property to the time they left.

The police report said one suspect appears to be holding a gun that’s tucked into his pants. Luckily, the suspects did not steal anything.

He handed the photos over to Oklahoma City Police, who said Friday that residential cameras have helped out in several cases.

“It’s always helpful when people do have surveillance cameras, especially when they’re of good quality, and we’re able to release them to the public, oftentimes leading us to arresting a suspect,” OCPD Sgt. Jennifer Wardlow said.

This article appeared recently in a publication from the UK.

“HUNDREDS of pounds of jewellery and cash has been stolen from a house in Tredworth.

The incident happened on Wednesday when several gold necklaces and gold rings were stolen from a house in Bathurst Road, along with cash too.

Meanwhile, another burglary took place in Calton Road yesterday, when thieves made off with a laptop.

The burglaries come after police launched Operation Switch on October 14, with officers calling on known offenders and warning them of their extra vigilance ahead of the clocks going back this Sunday.

The rest of the story is HERE.

A spokesman for Gloucestershire police said: “Just two burglaries in 24 hours represents an encouraging response to our burglary campaign Operation Switch.

“Of course though, for those two victims now having to cope with the disruption and sense of violation burglary brings, that will be little consolation.

As part of Operation Switch, advice is also being passed on to vulnerable households, urging residents to beef up their home security during the campaign.

There are about 40 home burglaries in Gloucester every month, but in November 2012 the number rocketed to 110.”

The United States is not the only place suffers from home burglary. Here one out of every six homes is subject to burglary on an annual basis according to the most recent FBI statistics.

“Outlining her priorities for the Care Quality Commission (CQC), chief inspector of adult social care Andrea Sutcliffe said more would be done to involve members of the public and expert teams in the monitoring of care homes and other adult care services.

Among a series of proposals set for public consultation next year, the CQC intends to allocate ratings for every care home and adult social care service by March 2016 – ranking services as outstanding, good, requires improvement or inadequate.

The rest of the story is HERE.

Inspection of services will be structured around five key questions: are the services safe, caring, effective, well-led and responsive to people’s needs.

The CQC is set to discuss whether undercover cameras and mystery shoppers – people posing as individuals looking for care for a loved one – could contribute to a positive culture of improvement while respecting the dignity of those in care.

Cameras Could Catch Illegal Dumpers In Ashland

Share

Officials plan to install hidden cameras around town to catch people illegally dumping trash, Assistant Town Manager Michael Herbert said Friday.
“TVs, mattresses, a lot of junk that’s disposed along that roadway. Stuff shows up there and never goes away,” said Selectman Mark Juitt, who first raised the concern earlier this month.

He said he sees big piles of garbage along the commuter rail access road near Dunkin’ Donuts on Rte. 135. Herbert said people also dump near the Howe Street landfill, but it’s hard to catch dumpers in action.

The rest of the story is HERE.

The town could fine property owners up to $300, but officials aren’t eager to fine the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, or themselves, since the town owns the landfill.

Instead, cameras will keep an eye on dumping hot spots and other secret locations to catch the perpetrators, Herbert said.

Police will monitor the cameras and only review footage of people dumping trash, Herbert said.

“The only people we’re going to pay attention to are the people who are doing something illegal,” he said.

Hidden Camera Used To Catch Elder Abuse

A family is relieved after the woman who abused a grandmother at an Arlington nursing pleaded guilty and awaits sentencing.

Mynez Carter, 84, was shown being roughed up in hidden camera video that aired in a FOX4 report last August.

Maria Acosta, 44, the worker at the nursing home, pleaded guilty to her role in the case and will soon be sentenced.

Monday was the first time Carter’s family faced Acosta in court and they will have the opportunity to give a victim’s impact statement after Acosta is sentenced.

“I want her to know how she has traumatized my family,” said Ruth Carter, the daughter of Mynez Carter.

Mynez passed away in Dec. 2012 after she was moved to another facility.

A state investigation into how Mynez Carter was treated by workers at Heritage Oaks resulted in a $137,000 fine for the facility. The nursing home paid $90,000 to settle.

Acosta faces probation up to ten years in prison and is free on bond until she is sentenced, which could happen within the next six weeks

Naperville Police Warn Residents About Burglaries

Share

Residential burglaries are plaguing Naperville with 12 occurring in less than two weeks, according to police.

In half of those cases between Aug. 29 and Sept. 10, the burglars entered unlocked homes at night while the owners were sleeping, police said. In nearly all of the daytime cases, doors and windows were forced open.

“We’re thinking that there’s probably a couple different crews out there, and in one group either a suspect or suspects are doing nighttime looking for open doors and another group or person is doing daytime kicking in doors,” Sgt. Lou Cammiso said.

The rest of the story is HERE.

In the nighttime burglaries, the burglars seem to be sticking to the ground floor and swiping items that are easily accessible like laptops, wallets and other items people have left out. In the daytime when no one is around, they are going to other parts of the homes and have grabbed as much as $30,000 in jewelry from one residence, according to Cammiso.

Residential burglaries numbers spiked in August with 17, up from seven in July and nine in June, Cammiso said. There have been eight this month.
Many of the most recent burglaries have occurred on the south side of town. The Police Department is deploying detectives to the south side to do surveillance work, and police also are asking residents to lock their doors and report any suspicious activity.

“We all believe it’s going to be a tip from the public about a suspicious person or vehicle that solves the case,” Cammiso said. “It’s a lot of ground for a handful of detectives to cover.”
