Make Personal Safety A Top Resolution This Year

Well another year has come and gone. As we embark on the new year, it is wise to reflect and review on the past year. Did we meet our goals and objectives? Personal safety is an area that is often overlooked. Are you vulnerable to a would-be criminal? Is your wife or children an easy target? Most of us find ourselves consumed by our day-to-day lives. The last thing on our minds is falling victim to an assault, robbery, rape or home invasion. Unfortunately, for many of us it only becomes a priority after we’ve been directly affected.

I challenge you to make personal safety a top resolution in 2016. Here are some tips to help you be successful.

  • Pay attention to your surroundings. Keep your eyes open and trust your gut feelings. If you feel something’s not right, it probably isn’t right
  • Stay in well lit and populated areas. Don’t even think about walking through an alley-way to save time.
  • Walk with confidence and purpose. Know where you are going and if you get lost, make it look like you know where you are. Don’t allow yourself to be easily surprised.
  • If you’re being followed, or see a person or group ahead you want to
avoid, make changes in your path. Cross the street, walk in another direction, or duck into a well populated place.
  • In public or social situations work on keeping an eye on your surroundings. Keep your hands free, eyes and ears open. Don’t allow yourself to become distracted by your smart phone or other activity that you loose touch with your surroundings.
  • Make eye contact. If you feel threatened or intimidated it’s natural to avoid eye contact. But looking someone straight in the face is the best deterrent. That eye contact may scare off a potential attacker because they fear you will be able to identify them.
  • Change things up often. If you are a walker, jogger or biker, it is best to change your route regularly. Plan out different routes and identify safe places you can go for help. If trouble arises, you can stop at these places and know you will be safe.
  • The “buddy system” works, use it. If at all possible, go places and do things in groups. If that’s not possible, there are several safety apps available that allow you to send contacts a text message with your location so they can track your safety throughout an activity. Some apps allow you to check-in or broadcast your current location to contacts through SMS messaging.

What happens when it’s too late. If you find yourself in a violent situation. Fight like your life depends on it. Having and using good quality pepper spray can stop a determined attacker quickly. Many law enforcement agencies consider pepper spray to be the most effective non-lethal personal security solution because of it’s ease of use and it’s high rate of effectiveness.

Uber Driver Attacked Uses Pepper Spray In Self Defense

In this video a Taco Bell executive manager is accused of attacking an UBER driver. The rider appears to be intoxicated and will not or can not provide a destination address. After several unsuccessful attempts to obtain an address, the UBER driver pulls over and tells the rider his trip is over. That’s when the exec “snaps” and becomes violent! Thankfully, the UBER driver is able to stop the attack using pepper spray in self defense.

Less Than Lethal Self Defense Options That Work

Pepper Spray for Self Defense

We live in the United States of America, the greatest Country in the world. Our fundamental right to bear arms is protected by The Second Amendment. The decision to maintain a gun in the home for self defense is a serious matter. The most important responsibility is ensuring that children cannot encounter loaded firearms. Anything less invites tragedy. When it comes to self defense options millions choose to carry a handgun, however, many others are not comfortable owning a handgun and instead look to less than lethal options.

The best less than lethal alternative for basic home and personal security is pepper spray.

Pepper spray, or oleoresin capsicum (OC), is used by law enforcement and corrections agencies across the United States to help subdue and arrest dangerous, combative, violent, or uncooperative subjects in a wide variety of scenarios. U.S. Department of Justice The Effectiveness and Safety of Pepper Spray

Professional law enforcement officers depend on pepper spray as a first line of defense because it works. The DOJ report referenced above conducted a 2 year study and found that when pepper spray was used there was a significant reduction in injuries to police officers from assaults, injuries to suspects from police use of force and excessive force complaints against the police.

Pepper spray provides you with effective protection at a safe distance. The ability to stop an attacker from 10 feet away is a huge plus. Pepper spray is the most practical self protection product available. It’s compact and convenient to carry just about anywhere. A small canister of pepper spray can provide protection against numerous threats. Most people don’t realize it but pepper spray is legal to carry in all 50 states (a handful have restrictions). Pepper spray is the great equalizer allowing a small petite would be victim the ability to protect themselves against a much larger and stronger attacker.

Self Defense Options Proven To Stop Violent Crime

Bourbon Street is synonymous with fun, partying, and good times. Unfortunately, in recent weeks, this tourist magnet is making news for all the wrong reasons. Violent crime has locals and tourists alike taking notice. According to the French Quarter has been a dangerous place to party, citing 13 assaults, 12 armed robberies in and around Bourbon Street during the second week of December. Throughout the month of December 2014, the area within a one-mile radius of Bourbon Street saw 61 Assaults and 36 Robberies!

Residents and workers are on alert because of the violent crime increase in the French Quarter. A group of locals are spreading awareness by hanging signs throughout the Quarter that read “Caution Walk in Large Groups – We Love NOPD – We Just Need More.” The signs are designed to warn of potential crime and to encourage people to enjoy the Quarter in the safety of a large group. This is excellent advice, as statistics show the likelihood of becoming a violent crime victim is drastically reduced when you’re accompanied by a group of 3 or more.

Unfortunately, many residents and workers don’t have the luxury of congregating in groups. A highly effective alternative includes personal protection items like Mace and Pepper spray. When used correctly, these non-lethal devices are proven to stop an aggressive attacker almost immediately. A blast of pepper spray to the face of an assailant goes to work within seconds. First, it causes the capillaries in the eyes to swell – this causes temporary blindness. The threat posed by an attacker who can’t see is greatly reduced. Respiratory inflammation and difficulty breathing help to take the “fight” out of a potential attacker. Mace or pepper spray hurts. The pain to the eyes has been described as “excruciating” and left untreated the effects last about 30 minutes. Self-defense sprays allow users the ability to stop a potential threat quickly and safely from a distance of 8 feet or more.

Why Pepper Spray Is an Effective Self-Defense Weapon

Simply put, pepper spray makes sense as a self-defense weapon. The prevalence of crime is on the increase throughout the United States. In the five minutes or so it takes you to read this article 3 women will fall victim to sexual assault! We are all vulnerable. How will you protect yourself?

Pepper spray is an effective self-defense weapon that is both legal and non-lethal. Many of us are not comfortable carrying a handgun and even if you are, the legal liabilities can be life changing. In every self-defense scenario you will be better off with pepper spray than without.

Pepper spray acts as the “great equalizer” as it provides a smaller, physically weaker person the ability to defend themselves against a larger, stronger attacker. Pepper spray provides the ability to stop an attacker from a distance of 8-12 feet. In a self-defense situation, distance equals safety, so the ability to neutralize a potential attack is priceless.

The effects of pepper spray go to work almost immediately. The most aggressive attacker will feel the effects within seconds. Even individuals under the influence of pain masking drugs are affected. Spraying someone in the face with pepper spray causes the eyes to involuntarily close shut and the capillaries to swell causing temporary blindness. Even if an attacker can’t feel pain, they are much less dangerous if they can’t see.

Pepper spray goes to work on the respiratory system and wreaks havoc on breathing. The active ingredients cause inflammation within the respiratory system which makes breathing difficult. If you can’t breathe you can’t fight. Pepper spray is extremely painful when sprayed into the eyes, nose and mouth. The pain has been compared to having shards of glass in the eyes.

With any self-defense weapon, it’s important to practice and become familiar with your device. Pepper spray is available in different spray patterns and formulas, each with its own set of pro’s and con’s. If you opt for non-lethal self-defense you’ll be much better off in every scenario with pepper spray than without.

Civilian Sabre Defensive Sprays Are They The Best?

Sabre brand defensive sprays is a name that may not be familiar to you. One of the reasons for that may be because most of their customers are law enforcement organizations both in the United States and foreign countries. The United States Federal Bureau of Prisons, the NYPD, the Department of Defense, the New Zealand National Police, Scandinavian Police forces and other top organizations of law enforcers around the globe are all customers.

The 39 year-old company’s slogan is “making grown men cry since 1975.” The family owned company specializes in pepper sprays and safety products. Their stated goal is to provide the safest and most effective personal pepper sprays. Civilian Sabre defensive sprays are the same ones that law enforcement officials buy. That should give you an indication of the effectiveness of the civilian Sabre defensive sprays. Are they the best?

Let’s take a look at why we think they might be. When you are in the market to purchase a defensive spray, you want the one that is the most effective-usually a measure of the hotness of the spray. The problem is almost everyone uses a different measure of hotness.

Most companies use Scoville heat units or SHUs as a standard while others use a percentage of oleoresin capsicum. Those measurements are relative but can be misleading. Sabre brand defensive sprays are the only manufacturer that we know of that uses “major capsaicinoids as their standard for hotness. Major Capsaicinoids (MC) are the true heat bearing and pain producing components which measure the strength of the entire pepper spray formulation. The MCs are the only true measure of pepper spray pungency.”

Thus civilian Sabre defensive sprays, in our humble opinion, are the best for the simple reason that they are the hottest and come in a wide variety of disbursement methods including pepper gel and colors including pink which women love.

What Is The Best Weapon For Your Self Defense?

If you could choose one weapon for self-defense, which would it be?

For women the ability to defend themselves from a distance is very appealing. Most pepper sprays have a range of at least 8 feet some as high as 18 feet. Women have more opportunities to use a self-defense weapon because they are assaulted nine times more often than men.

And if you need any more convincing consider this. Every law enforcement officer in the country carries a pepper spray on his utility belt. It is a key component in their continuum of force that all law enforcement officers use in the apprehension and control of suspects in a criminal case. It is often their first nonlethal choice in the performance of their duties.

Additionally, all letter carriers with the U.S. Postal Service are issued, pepper sprays as a first line of defense against dog attacks.

So my question to you is, if it is good enough for law enforcement officers and good enough for letter carriers shouldn’t it be good enough for you and your self-defense?

Domestic Violence Is An Equal Opportunity Destroyer

A recent study conducted by the American Psychological Association contradicted stereotypes that domestic violence is more prevalent in low-income or minority households. You can read the whole story HERE.

Basically it showed violent incidents crossed economic lines with near equal percentages in all income brackets. Families of all races and ethnicities were also affected and three of every four perpetrators were male. “Family violence definitely cuts across all society’s segments and income levels and has a serious impact on children, the nationwide study indicates.

“The study interviewed children who had witnessed domestic violence. Three in four children saw the violence, 21 percent heard it and 3 percent saw the injuries later. The violence included beating, hitting and kicking a parent or caregiver. One in 75 cases reported the child was physically hurt during a violent attack on their abused parent. All experienced fear and anxiety, and more than half said they were afraid someone would be hurt badly. The children indicated the violence was one of their scariest experiences ever, according to the study published online April 7 in the APA journal Psychology of Violence.”

Tips For Assault Prevention

Here is an interesting story and video about a self-defense instructor who teaches Assault Avoidance Tips. The main thing that he teaches women in his class is to act fast not think. The reason for this is simple: when you’re in a life or death situation, reaction times are critical. A few seconds lost thinking about what to do instead of reacting may cost you your life.

He has some simple tactics and tips to keep women safe in any kind of situation

• “Wear a purse that goes across your body, not over your shoulder.
• Keep pepper spray or a small pocket knife on your keys, and hold them as though you’re ready to attack.
• Walk with your hand inside your purse, so you can grab that spray as fast as possible.
• Other simple weapons to keep in your purse: A screwdriver, scissors, or even a pencil.
• Walk with scissors dangling in your hands, no one will think anything but the potential attacker.
• Buy a small gun, one that can clip to your bra and aim for the groin area.”

Sexual Assault As Normal?

Here’s a story from the Huffington Post about perceptions that young women have about Sexual Assaults.

It raises one potential answer to why so many sexual assault crimes-nearly 250,000 a year ago-go unreported 60% of the time. The answer is many women do not see themselves as victims.

A sociologist at Marquette University analyzed interviews with 100 girls between the ages of three and 17 who may have experienced sexual assault. Overwhelmingly, their accounts indicated sexual violence has been normalized in their communities and they considered harassment an everyday part of life rather than a criminal act.

The same study identified several reasons why these assaults are not reported including; shame fear of retribution and mistrust of authority. “The most alarming conclusion, however, is that young women regard sexual violence against them as normal. Moreover, the girls interviewed believed that men ‘can’t help it’ and perceived ‘everyday harassment and abuse as normal male behavior.”

“One participant — only 13 years old — said harassment is standard in her school: ‘They grab you, touch your butt and try to, like, touch you in the front, and run away, but it’s OK, I mean… I never think it’s a big thing because they do it to everyone.'”

This study may account for many factors when it comes to sexual assault on women in high school and college and may even be a forerunner to domestic violence.

People in position of authorities like teachers and parents must teach young men and young women that sexual violence is not acceptable before media and community norms give the impression that it is.

Female Assaults On College Campuses

Here is another story about Assaults On Women specifically in Missouri where U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill has led a national push to scrutinize rape and sexual assaults of women on college campuses.

“There are young women that are victimized every day, every hour, at a college campus somewhere,” McCaskill told the News-Leader on Thursday. “Too often young women second-guess themselves. ‘I should not have been drinking. I should not have been in his room. I did not know him well enough.’

“They do that instead of taking a clear look and realizing that they have a been a victim of a felony,” McCaskill said. “You do not have to have perfect judgment to be a victim of a crime.”

McCaskill previously had focused her efforts on helping women sexually assaulted in the military.

One of the main differences between colleges and the military is that the military has a rigid chain of command, which in some ways makes addressing the problem simpler. Higher education has no such line of authority.

There are other differences as well but the main similarity is women on college campuses — like women in the military — live in small, closed communities where word travels fast. This makes some students reluctant to report.

Administrators too often do not support women who report they were sexually assaulted on campus. She mentioned high-profile examples at the University of Montana and Notre Dame University. The schools fear that such publicity hurts their image and their student recruitment, she said.

Colleges administrators have been openly hostile, she said, when female students allege rape and sexual assault.

Nearly one in five women in college are victims of attempted or actual sexual assault in their undergraduate careers, according to McCaskill’s office.

A report from the National Institute of Justice states that college women are at higher risk for sexual assault than their non-college peers.

Teen Relationship Violence

This is a story about how Teen Dating Violence is a growing concern all over the country. As many as one in three young women have reported they have been in a relationship where they have been injured or hurt in some way. But because of their inexperience and lack of knowledge officials say the worst part is that many teens do not even know the abuse is happening.

There is actually a move afoot to start teaching young teenagers in middle school about relationships and what constitutes a healthy one versus an unhealthy one. That idea is actually gaining traction because where else will teens learn about this topic? Right now many teens gain their knowledge of a relationship from electronic media including social media and friends and family.

That is why so many of them have no clue what a healthy relationship is or where the boundaries are.

We have always recommended that teenagers carry a self-defense product with them to defend themselves should they be physically assaulted.

Sexual Assaults In The Military

This is a story about Military Sexual Assaults and the scourge that it has on military personnel. According to the Women’s Bureau between 20% and 48% of all female veterans have been sexually assaulted.

This is been going on for a long time according to them but only recently as its severity been brought to the public’s attention.

In 2012 for example soldiers were 15 times more likely to be raped by a comrade than being killed by an enemy.

Two women U.S. senators are working to change that: Claire McCaskill of Missouri and Kirsten Gillibrand. We note with interest that no male senators joined the bandwagon. We feel certain that is just a coincidence. Gillibrand has criticized Pres. Obama for failing to issue stronger reforms to protect survivors of military sexual assault.

“According to the U.S. Defense Department, out of an estimated 26,000 sexual assaults in 2012, only 3,374 were reported. The low reporting rate is unsurprising – 60 percent of victims stated that they experienced consequences for coming forward and only 302 perpetrators were actually prosecuted.

These rates echo those of civilian rape; however, there is a strong argument that this is not a societal problem but a military problem.”

The rape differential in the military reveals that the military sexual assault rate is lower than the rate of civilian rape but higher than any other military crime. The recruiting process serves to weed out those with criminal records, yet this does not appear to hold true for rates of sexual assault.

One of the best ways that women can defend themselves against sexual assault is with a self-defense item that is nonlethal. They are legal just about everywhere and are an inexpensive, effective way to defend yourself against any type of assault.

We always recommend a product that can be carried on a keychain that way it is with you at all times.

Pepper Spray Disbursement Types

In today’s blog post we’re taking a look at different types of pepper sprays. The first way to differentiate them is by brand. We carry several top of the line brands of pepper sprays including Mace brand; Fox brand defensive sprays; Sabre defensive sprays; Guard Dog sprays; Pepper Shot sprays and more.

They each have their own characteristics that differentiate them from other products but the differences are slight. After all they all do the same thing.

The next biggest way to differentiate pepper sprays is by the spray pattern or disbursement method. The four types of disbursement methods are the stream or broken stream, the cone spray, foggers and foams.

Stream or broken stream is a shot with more force and thus has a longer range and less chance of blowback to your face, which might happen with a mist or the cone spray.

Cone spray is the next type. The advantage of using a cone spray is that it can cover a wider area, usually as much is 2 feet. The cone spray can travel 6 to 12 feet. It is highly susceptible to windy conditions. Because the mist in a cone spray is so fine it easily be inhaled, which can cause “instant choking and uncontrollable coughing.”

The fogger is the third disbursement method. It is more commonly used for multiple attackers, crowd control, and most commonly as a Bear Spray. A fogger is considered to be the fastest acting of all sprays.

Foam or Gel Sprays are the most effective in windy conditions and use a thick, heavy foam that can accumulate on a face making it virtually impossible to wipe off. Its effects are worse if you try to remove it. All you do then is grind the ingredients into your face making the pain worse.

We like this Sabre Red Formula that uses a maximum strength pepper gel making it perfect for indoor use. Because it’s a gel it can spray up to 18 feet, longer than most sprays and foggers.
