Teen Dating Violence-An Epidemic?

Share

Nationally, 32 percent of college-aged women — and one in five girls age 12 to 15 — experience dating violence, officials said at the announcement.

But one survey showed that 81 percent of parents didn’t think teen dating violence was a problem or didn’t know if it was, said Cheryl Pytel, a member of the Interval House board.

Teen dating should be discussed “the way you talk about alcohol, tobacco, texting and driving,” she said. “It should be that type of a conversation with parents, teachers, coaches, anyone who is involved with youth.”

Research also shows that children who grow up with domestic violence in their homes are more likely to abuse or to be the victims of such abuse later in life.

One of the best ways that young women can defend themselves against dating violence is with one of our Mace Pepper Sprays which can disable an assailant for as much as 45 minutes.

New Law Aimed At “Knockout Game”

Share

Last week we introduced you to the new “game” in town called the “knockout game.”

Now a pair of NY state Assemblymen introduced a bill that would mandate a minimum prison term for anyone convicted of aggravated assault related to the controversial “Knockout Game.”

Reports of “Knockout Game” attacks — in which someone sneaks up to a random person and tries to knock them unconscious with one blow to the head — have proliferated across the U.S. in recent months.

“‘Knockout’ is not a game. It is a violent and dangerous act,” said Assembly Minority Leader Jon Bramnick (R-Union), who co-sponsored the legislation (A4549) with Assemblyman Ron Dancer (R-Ocean). “As legislators, we must ensure that our laws address the newest inceptions of violence with the harshest possible penalties.”

Still, some police officials have questioned recently whether the “Knockout Game” is actually real. They say the attacks may be nothing more than random assaults that have always occurred and that the “game” may simply be an urban myth.

The Los Angeles times recently did a story about occidental colleges’ deliberate under reporting of sexual assaults on campus.

Read the Los Angeles Times article HERE.

The tiny Los Angeles College has been the center of a firestorm revolving around sexual assaults on college campuses. In October the college said it failed to disclose two dozen sexual assaults made by students in 2010 and 2011. College officials claim that was a complete accounting of assault cases. The Los Angeles Times review found close to 30 additional sexual assault allegations made 2012 that were not disclosed and dozens more ignored by the Dean of students office since 2009.

Sexual assaults on college campuses are near epidemic proportions across the country with close to one in every three women the victim at some point her four year stay at a University or College.

The best way for women to defend themselves is with a self-defense product such as a stun gun or pepper spray. Sabre Pepper Spray has a keychain attachment so it is more likely to be found in a deep purse.

Dog Attacks: Romania’s Plan to Shoot Thousands of Street Dogs Delayed

Share

Following the recent death of a 4-year-old boy who was attacked by street dogs in Bucharest, the Romanian parliament passed a law last week to allow dogs in public areas to be killed if they are not claimed or adopted within two weeks.

It is estimated that more than 60,000 stray dogs roam the streets of the capital city. Dozens of bites to humans are reported daily and tourism has been negatively impacted. The death of the little boy was merely the trigger that brought hundreds of protesters into the streets demanding government action to stop the attacks.

However, on Monday legislators from all parties joined to file a challenge and delay the order in Romania’s highest court, Reuters reports.

“We have to avoid reacting en-masse through collective killing …we don’t want to see tens of thousands of corpses, “Haralambie Vochitoiu, one of the lawmakers, told Agerpres, the state news agency.

We know of no city in the United States that has 60,000 stray dogs running around. Not sure we would ever let things get that bad, but dog attacks and dog bites affect literally millions of Americans every year.

Young Women Learn Basic Self-Defense Skills

Share

This summer has seen a spate of attacks on women in Boston. In June, two young women were attacked around Mission Hill. Both managed to fight off their knife-wielding assailant. In July, in South Boston, three young women were attacked and beaten within a 19-hour period. One of them, Amy Lord, was kidnapped and killed.

When confronted by violence, how do women fight back? One program teaches self-defense through empowerment.

The Madison Park Development Corp. in Roxbury is offering an intensive self-defense course. Monique Blocker works for the housing development as a “VIP” — a violence intervention/prevention youth leader — and brought the classes to Roxbury.

You can read the whole story HERE.

Girls’ LEAP classes are now taught in the Cambridge Public Schools. The program has also expanded, through community partners, into other communities, including Boston, where it says those at highest risk for sexual assault are girls aged 10 to 14. Ballantyne said the curriculum is tailored with that in mind.

The class includes exercises using new skills, such as “the wrist breakaway” — how to get away when someone grabs you. It also reinforces life lessons, like walk with confidence.

August is the month that literally millions of high school seniors who have graduated and millions of others who are returning to school are off to college. For many it will be the first time that they are on their own and have a sense of independence. It is an exciting time to be sure. But the peaceful tranquility of a college campus can be misleading for women and here’s why. Close to 30% of all women who are in a college or university will be sexually assaulted in their time there.

Here are some safety tips for those college age women.

Always have a buddy with you when you go anywhere. Even if you’re on a date insist on double dating. It may seem hokey, but the term date rape originated on college campuses.

Always carry a self-defense product with you. A pepper spray can disable an assailant for as long as 45 minutes

We like this lipstick pepper spray because it has a UV marking dye and has 10 1/2 second shots that can go up to 6 feet away in a container that looks just like a lipstick dispenser.

If you are assaulted, make sure you report it to the local Police Department not campus authorities. You are sure to get action that way.

Consider getting one of our many diversion safes that can hide small valuables in your room in plain sight.

Since 2005 Guardian Self-Defense & Security Products LLC has provided premium pepper spray Self Defense Products and a wide variety of Home Security Products to over 45,000 consumers. We offer a full-line of premium self-defense weapons such as pepper spray, stun guns, tasers, pepper mace, personal alarms and other self-defense items.

Self-Defense Tips For Women-Part One- Safety Tip Of The Week

It is well established fact that women are the targets of violence in nine out 10 cases-everything from assaults, rapes, domestic violence. Even in home invasions, women are the preferred targets.

So it makes sense for women to be more aware of that fact so they can learn how to defend themselves a little bit better. Here are some self-defense tips for women that may end up saving their lives. But guys, you should take a look at these too and pass them along to all the women in your life.

There a lot of tips to share so we split them up into several parts. Here is part one.

Develop a plan to improve your self-defense. That includes dry runs on what you will do in case of an emergency.

Walk with a sense of self-confidence. Of course back it up with some self-defense training. Having a sense of self-confidence shows through.

Use restraint and common sense. Don’t get baited into a fight. It takes two to tango. It’s easier to walk away with your head on.

Keep to well-lit areas and go with a friend. Avoid dangerous parts of town like the plague.

Once you learn self-defense skills, practice them until they become second nature. They will last you a lifetime but only if you practice them.

Develop a sense of awareness. Be aware of where you are and who is around you.

Never act like an easy target. Don’t look like a victim. Someone who is walking with her head down or talking on a cell phone makes for easy pickings for the bad guys.

Never hitchhike. Walk, take a taxi, use a bus but never hitchhike.

Don’t be paranoid. Just beware and aware that there are threats around you.

Always keep some Self-Defense Products with you like a Stun Gun or aPowerful Pepper Spray or both-just in case.
