The home security products industry is rapidly approaching $60 billion a year in sales all because of two things. First, homeowners make burglary relatively easy. It's a well-documented fact that over 40% of all burglaries happen through unlocked doors and windows. The second reason is that it is such a lucrative business for the burglar. In the five or 10 minutes a burglar will spend in the house the average amount of goods taken, according to FBI statistics, is over $1700. On top of that, if the burglar does get caught, the penalties are almost a joke. So it's a high reward and low-risk enterprise. No wonder home burglary is so popular.
