Handyman Caught On Video In Theft Of $70,000

"A suspicious Sanford homeowner installed video cameras and caught her handyman stealing $70,000 in jewelry, cash and other personal belongings, police said. Mary Pflueger told Sanford police that on Oct. 11 or 12, approximately $400-$500 in cash and a digital camera went missing from her home. Pflueger installed two hidden cameras inside her home on Oct. 27 because she suspected her 53-year-old handyman Philip Liles had been stealing her things — including a Tiffany & Co necklace valued at $6,100, according to a report. Video footage later showed Liles taking items from the safe inside her home. The police report included a list of more than 30 stolen items, including $500 in cash, necklaces, rings, earrings and bracelets. Sanford police monitored the camera outside of 59-year-old Pflueger's home Friday, when Liles returned to do yard work. The camera recorded him opening a safe and removing two $50 bills. "This time, the Sanford Police" were waiting for him, a news release said, and Liles was arrested at the scene. He is charged with burglary of an occupied dwelling, burglary of an unoccupied dwelling, dealing in stolen property, false ownership to secondhand dealer, grand theft and petty theft. Police recovered some of Pflueger's stolen items at a local pawn shop.
