Is Your Pepper Mace Expired?

Tonight I grabbed my pepper mace and headed out for a nightly run. During the run I happened to glance at the expiration date on the canister and guess what? You guessed it, my pepper mace had expired several months ago. If you own a pepper spray and don't know the expiration date, it's important to go find out. Most pepper mace has a 3 year expiration date, which means it needs to be replaced every 36 months. Three years seems like a long time, but if you're not careful it will come and go without warning. The active ingredient in pepper mace begins to breakdown after the stated expiration date. This means it loses potency over time, so if you use the pepper spray after the stated date it may no longer be effective. Here are our suggestions to help keep your pepper mace fresh:

• If you have a canister without a stated expiration date, throw it away.
• If you have a canister that has expired, throw it away.
• Some pepper sprays (Fox Labs) place the manufactured date on the canister. This means your canister will expire 3 years from the stated manufactured date.
• Never purchase a pepper spray without an expiration date.
• Take the expiration date, minus 1 month; place that date on your email calendar with a message like Pepper spray expiring in one month. This is your cue to order your replacement canister.
