Domestic Violence-A Problem For Everyone
Post by Bryan Buckner
That was the headline recently that 98% of adults in California believe that domestic violence can happen to anyone. Statistics of all kinds back that up. Domestic violence crosses all racial, ethnic, age, religious belief, social and economic barriers. We call it an "equal opportunity destroyer of lives." There are a wide variety of reasons why domestic violence is so under-reported in the first place. Among them are shame and fear of reprisal, not just from the spouse but you can include a spouse's family as well. Until recently there was plenty of anecdotal evidence that showed reporting a domestic violence assault rarely got the attention that it deserved. So you can add that to the mix of the reasons why it wasn't reported. Fortunately law enforcement officers and courts have taken a more serious look at domestic violence for what it is-an assault. When you look to the causes for domestic violence they are as varied as you can possibly get. Chief among them are economic conditions. Disagreements and arguments over finances in a family cause a great deal of stress, which frequently leads to physical confrontations including murder. Poverty, low education levels, social status and mental illness all follow suit as possible reasons or causes for domestic violence. We still feel that domestic violence is a learned trait. Young men learn from their abusive fathers. They see that there are rarely any repercussions for the domestic violence and figure that it's okay. That thinking and that pattern has to change. Those are some of the reasons why domestic violence is so under-reported, some of the commonly accepted causes of this crime and how to prevent an assault on you in a domestic violence situation. After all, we are talking about an assault which can and has led to serious injury, including death. You have a right to defend yourself in any way that you can.
