Sexual Assault on College Campuses

The prevalence of sexual assault on college campuses is disturbing and eye opening to say the least. In a recent survey complied by the New York State Coalition Against Sexual Assault it was determined that at least 1 in 4 college females will be the victim of sexual assault at some point during their college career. Over 80% of all sexual assaults are committed by someone who is an acquaintance of the victim. Date rape, acquaintance rape and drug induced rape are the most prevalent. Over 48 percent of college females who were victimized by rape did not consider what happened to them rape when interviewed. Additionally, a survey of high school students believed that forced sex was acceptable or "OK" under some circumstances. More than 70% of rape victims knew their attackers. At least 50% of college students' sexual assaults were associated with alcohol or drug use.
