Stopping College Campus Sexual Assaults

Recently U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal D-Conn. met with the University of St. Joseph students, professors and staff and talked about the need for cultural change regarding Campus Sexual Assaults. This was the third roundtable discussion that Sen. Blumenthal has had about sexual assaults on college campuses. He hopes to shape legislation and propose funding for programs that might help prevent it and better serve assault victims-good luck Senator! Their laws on the books now and tons of money that have been thrown at this problem but the statistics haven't changed. -- Close to 25% of all females on a college campus will be sexually assaulted in her four years there. -- Only an estimated one out of every 10 sexual assaults is ever even reported. -- The perpetrators are known to the victims and 90% of the cases-they are classmates. -- Little of anything is ever done to the perpetrators if they are caught which hardly ever happens. -- Alcohol is involved in over 70% of the cases. The attention this year to sexual assault on college campuses in Connecticut was spurred by a Title IX complaint seven current and former University of Connecticut students filed in October, charging that UConn didn't protect them from sexual assault and didn't provide them with the help they needed when they reported it. "Blumenthal said he has heard that some college women are reluctant to report a sexual assault if they have been drinking. They feel they'll be told, 'You're underage, you were drunk, what did you expect? You were at that fraternity. Don't you know that?' But that's not a defense." The best way the females on a campus can defend themselves is with a self-defense product such as pepper spray or stun gun.
