Outdoor Protection With Pepper Spray For Runners, Walkers And Cyclists

Share

The two biggest threats to people who run, walk or cycle outdoors are dog attacks and, especially for women, attacks from assailants.

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) has statistics that show that close to 5 million Americans annually are attacked by dogs with nearly 1,000,000 of them requiring hospitalization.

To combat this common threat we suggest that you learn some basic dog attack prevention techniques. Some suggestions are:

  1. Carry a pepper spray for runners that has a hand strap.
  2. Avoiding areas where dogs congregate.
  3. If you see two or more dogs together, a pack mentality for the dog sets in making them more dangerous.
  4. Some people claim that dogs can sense fear and if you panic dogs may become more confident in an attack.
  5. If a dog is just barking at you, hold your position. He may lose interest and leave.
  6. Because dogs are very territorial, if you approach a dog that is in a fenced in area, he may be especially aggressive.
  7. Never pet a dog while he’s sleeping, eating or drinking.
  8. Never yell at a dog and for that matter don’t smile at a dog either. A dog sees your teeth from a smile as a sign of aggression.
  9. Learn to read some dog body language. It’s a dog’s ears are pinned back he is ready to attack you. If he is loping at you he may just want to play.
  10. Never run away from a dog.

Techniques to defend against human assailants include walking, jogging or cycling with a friend and avoiding what might be considered high risk such as darkened areas or areas that have lots of hiding places such as wooded lots.

When out walking always carry a pepper spray for runners such as this one from Sabre brand. It contains approximately 25 shots up to 10 feet away in a tight stream pattern which reduces wind blowback. The adjustable hand strap makes carrying while cycling, jogging or running simple and easy. There is thumb lock safety to help prevent accidental discharge.

What Is Oleoresin Capsicum?

Share

WOMAN USING PEPPER SPRAY

What is oleoresin capsicum? It is a funny sounding name; actually two words that comprise the essence of pepper spray. The two words are; oleoresin which means an oil holding resin in solution, and capsaicin which is the active ingredient in peppers that makes them hot. Capsaicin is the major ingredient in creams and lotions “commonly marketed to relieve muscle and joint pain.”

To rephrase it, oleoresin capsicum is the resin of one of the hottest peppers in the world, the cayenne-combined with water, glycol and a propellant such as nitrogen to make it usable as a defense spray in a canister.

According to Wikipedia “Pepper spray, also known as OC spray, OC gas, and capsicum spray, is a lachrymatory agent (meaning it can cause teary eyes and a runny nose) used in policing, riot control, crowd control, and personal self-defense, including defense against dogs and bears.”

Pepper spray is widely recognized as the largest selling, most popular self defense product in the world. In the United States it is legal in all 50 states with a few cities and states having restrictions.

It makes the eyes swell up and inflames the mucous membranes of the upper respiratory tract; it causes temporary blindness and a great deal of pain.

It is used for protection against human assailants and animal attacks, specifically dogs and bears. Every law enforcement officer in the country carries oleoresin capsicum on his utility belt as his first nonlethal protection tool. The U.S.P.S. issues defensive sprays to all of their letter carriers as their first line of defense against dog attacks.

For civilians, oleoresin capsicum is a favorite among both women and men because it is so effective, so inexpensive and so easy to use. It is over to 95% effective on average.

Sabre Dog Pepper Spray A Must For Walkers, Joggers and Cyclists

Every week we read about dog attacks. It is true that most dog attacks and dog bites happen in the home against small children. That’s hard to believe, but true. And the stories you hear about letter carriers getting bitten by dogs in the course of their duties are also true. That is not a myth that has gotten blown out of proportion.

dog chasing letter carrier

As a matter of fact, letter carriers are the second biggest group of victims of dog attacks which is why the U.S.P.S. issues pepper sprays to all letter carriers for their self-defense. Pepper spray that is specifically designed as a defense against dog attacks has a little different formulation than other sprays which makes it particularly effective.

Every year in the United States, close to 1 million victims get hospitalized from dog attacks and dog bites. That is only 20% of the total 5 million who actually get attacked.

SABRE DOG PEPPER SPRAY

Sabre Dog Pepper Spray is an absolute must for people who love to exercise outdoors-for walkers, joggers and cyclists. It provides kind of serious protection from dog attacks that consumers demand. It comes in a 1.8 ounce canister that can provide 25 short bursts up to 15 feet away. It has a convenient clip which you can use to secure it to your belt, pocket or purse.

While we would recommend that you always carry Sabre dog pepper spray with you when you’re walking jogging or cycling outdoors, you should also learn to read a dog’s body language for some self-defense.

From WebMD “Your dog will also raise his ears up and forward when he’s feeling aggressive. If your dog has his ears pulled back slightly, he’s signalling his intention to be friendly. If his ears are completely flattened or stuck out to the sides of his head, he’s signalling that he’s frightened or feeling submissive.”

If a dog approaches you with a loping gait, he wants to play. If you smile at a dog he sees that as a sign of aggression.

Learn more about a dog’s body language to help you prevent dog bites and dog attacks, but always carry your Sabre dog pepper spray with you when you’re outdoors.

Dog Attacks-Three Times Higher In Deprived Areas

Share

Here is a story from England about Dog Attacks in areas that are deprived.

“The number of dog bites leading to hospital admission is three times higher among people living in the deprived areas study from Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC) has revealed.

Hospital admissions for dog attacks are three times higher in deprived area than affluent regions in England.

According to the report, there were 6,743 hospital admissions specifically by dog attacks, a 5.8% increase from the 6,372 admissions last year.”

Dr Simon Harding, a lecturer in criminology at the University of Middlesex said: “Deprived areas are often more populous with larger families, more children, more pets and more people living in closer proximity to each other and dogs. Also dogs tend to be exercised in public, rather than in gardens or remote fields. At the same time people in poorer areas use dogs for protection, instead of alarms or house insurance and there is an underlying trend towards the use of aggressive Pit Bull-type breeds as weapon or status dogs.”

Dog Attack Kills Toddler/Grandma

Share

Here’s a story from the Fox affiliate in Phoenix, Arizona about Dog Attacks.

A family there suffered a terrible tragedy when their nine-month-old baby was mauled by their pet dog-an Akita. The mother left the baby in the family room for a few minutes when the Akita knocked down a gate and went after the child. The dog apparently has a history of violence attacking both the older sister and the infant’s mother.

An official noted that it is not uncommon to keep dogs that have violent history but that all dogs matter how long they’ve been part of the family can turn on you an attack.

Recently in Arizona, a 77-year-old woman was attacked while she was giving medicine to a dog that had been with the family for years. She subsequently died.

Giving a dog plenty of exercise and training — and doing this from the time they are puppies will help prevent attacks, no matter what breed of dog.

Dog Attacks-New Opinion

Share

Here is an editorial written by a concerned citizen about her observations in people’s attitudes when out walking dogs, riding their bikes or just out through daily exercise.

You can read the whole opinion piece HERE.

Her observations are that people are arming themselves with pepper spray, sticks, stun guns, wasp spray or anything else they can use if there dog was attacked by an aggressive dog or if they are attacked.

The fact is, there is no excuse for a dog to be aggressive. An aggressive dog is an aggressive dog, period; end of story. It’s like going to any self-help group and taking the first step by admitting that you have a problem. That done, the next step is getting help, and there is help for you and your aggressive dog.

“The number one thing any dog owner must do is keep your dog on a leash! This goes for every dog, friendly or not. This is for their safety and yours, as well as the community. There is a leash law and for good reason; please adhere to it for the safety of all involved. I will admit that I have been remiss at times with my own dogs on this, but have amended my ways with a renewed, and vigilant attitude.

Let me say again that there are no excuses for an aggressive dog. You can’t take back the damage that your dog has done after the fact. There is documented proof that the dog who is the victim of a dog attack will become dog aggressive themselves for survival sake. I can’t blame them but this can become a snowball effect, with our beautiful and safe community to take the brunt of it. Take responsibility for your dog by being a responsible owner.”

In the United States over 5 million people are attacked by dogs every year and 1 million of them need treatment at a hospital. That equates to a huge cost, both in time and money. Insurance companies are going crazy paying out claims against homeowners. But the biggest thing is that people are afraid of dogs and for good reason.

They hesitate to go out walking, cycling or jogging anymore because of the fear of dog attacks. But it needn’t be that way if they arm themselves with a good self-defense product such as the Mace Pepper Gun or the Sabre Protector Dog Spray.

Dog Attack Prevention Training

Share

Here’s an interesting story about how dog trainers can socialize dogs and Prevent Dog Attacks.

It stems from several dog attacks in Central Texas over the last two weeks: one involved a dog attacking three children who were sent to the hospital; another involved a pitbull which mauled a little girl to death. Needless to say the community is in an uproar.

“Dogs can be violent and kind of unruly and rowdy if they’re not trained real well,” Dolan said. “We had a problem with her jumping, so that’s why we originally took her to get trained.”

Training stops annoying habits like jumping and keeps your dog from becoming dangerous.

Dogs who have been penned up in the backyard become tense and have built up a layer of frustration and become very territorial.

It’s also important for parents to talk with their kids about how to deal with dogs.

Trainers say any dog can be gentle, but it’s up to the owners to make it happen.

If you have a dog that shows signs of aggression like growling or biting, trainers can do “Behavior Adjustment Training” to analyze the dog’s tension and change the way they respond.

Scotland Dog Attacks Double

Share

Here’s a story from the daily record in the United Kingdom, which reports the number of Dog Attacks in Scotland where most victims requiring hospital treatment has doubled in the last 15 years. Most of the victims are children, leaving citizens screaming for action.

“The daily record newspaper called on the Scottish Government to take action after a spate of horrific attacks on children.”

The newspaper campaign is calling for:

1. The return of dog licensing, with stringent suitability tests for prospective dog owners.

2. Dog wardens to police the new system, funded through the cost of the license.

3. Mandatory micro-chipping of all dogs to keep proper track of all animals to encourage responsible ownership.

What Is Bear Spray?

Share

Today is Veteran’s Day-Thank a Vet today

From a recent article about what to look for in a bear spray.

“Two grizzly-caused deaths near Yellowstone National Park this summer, combined with celebrity zookeeper Jack Hanna’s bear spray encounter in Glacier National Park and the recent PBS documentary recounting the 1967 “Night of the Grizzlies” incident, have made bear protection a priority for backcountry visitors.

“Everyone sees the price of the big cans, and they ask, ‘Can’t I get a smaller one?’ ” Army Navy Economy Store manager Eric Langhammer said. This starts the ongoing discussion of what bear spray is and is not.

The first issue is that while bear sprays are a kind of pepper spray, not all pepper sprays are bear sprays. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency certifies only four manufacturers (including two in Montana) to make “bear spray.”

“When you say pepper spray, it is misleading,” said Tim Lynch of Universal Defense Alternative Products, the Bozeman-based bear spray maker. “Law enforcement spray is pepper spray, but it isn’t considered bear spray. You want people to pick up the correct product.”

The difference involves what’s in the can and how it’s meant to be used. Chemicals like Mace and other tear gas-type sprays have little effect on bears. The ingredient you’re looking for is oleoresin of capsicum, an extremely potent essence of chili peppers.

The second part involves how the spray is delivered. Bear sprays aren’t meant to be squirted directly on an oncoming bear. Instead, the idea is to throw up a misty wall of irritants for the bear to run into.

“When a bear decides to charge, it’s gathering information as it charges,” said Chuck Bartlebaugh, who heads the Be Bear Aware campaign for the Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee. “What it hears, sees, smells – it’s all part of the charge. Bear spray removes their focus. They don’t like losing their ability to smell and see. They don’t like the whooshing noise and the orange cloud.”

Some thought should go into the spraying action, too. Bartlebaugh demonstrated how one-handed use of a canister’s thumb-trigger tends to tilt the spray upward. The suggested tactic is to aim flat or down at a space between you and the bear, preferably at least 25 feet away. That helps ensure the bear runs into the cloud instead of under it.

Bear spray canisters fire a shotgun pattern cloud that travels out like long-distance wasp spray. But sprayers still need to be aware of wind direction and rain, which can limit the spray’s range. Some of the manufacturers are still disputing how long and far the cans should discharge.

Nevertheless, a 2006 study found that only 2 percent of those using bear spray in a bear attack were injured, compared to 50 percent of those who depended on a firearm to defend themselves.

“We have a whole generation of people thinking it’s OK to approach bears,” Bartlebaugh said. “In shark country, if you holler ‘shark,’ everyone gets out of the water. In the bear world, if you holler ‘bear,’ everybody runs into the woods.”

Keep your eye on the ball and get the right product that will protect you.

Our Frontiersman Bear Spray is one of only a few bear sprays that is EPA approved and will shoot up to 35 feet away.

Self Defense-Dog Attack Phobia

Share

Do dogs cause you to change your behavior? Does the fear of getting chased or bitten by a dog send tingles up and down your spine? I know it does for me but then again I have some personal experience that justifies my feeling. What about you? What is your excuse for having dog attack phobia?

Nearly 40 years ago I got 82 stitches in my right forearm courtesy of a dog attack. That was the basis for my cynophobia. “Cynophobia is the abnormal fear of dogs. Animal phobias are among the most common of the specific phobias and 36% of patients who seek treatment report being afraid of dogs or cats. Cynophobia is especially debilitating because of the high prevalence of dogs in the United States estimated at over 62 million in 2003” that according to Wikipedia.

Just because over 5 million Americans every year get bitten by a dog doesn’t mean that you could be one of them. And just because over 1 million of those people require hospital visit to care for their wound doesn’t mean the same thing can’t happen to you.

And that statistic is just for the ones that are reported. Many other dog bites never get reported because they’re relatively minor.

The best thing is to avoid dogs altogether. Unfortunately for millions of Americans who love to get their exercise in the great outdoors by walking, jogging or cycling that just doesn’t seem feasible. The second best thing to do is to arm yourself with a self-defense product that can protect you against a dog attack and prevent you from getting bitten.

In Nebraska, dog owners are liable for any and all damages to anyone except a trespasser under a statutory strict liability.

Nebraska law sets forth dog bite liability. As dogs are personal property for all intents and purposes, the owner of a dog is liable for any and all damages that could accrue (1) to any person other than a trespasser by reason of having been bitten by such dog or dogs and (2) to any person, firm, or corporation by reason of such dog or dogs killing, wounding, injuring, worrying or chasing any person or persons or any sheep or other domestic animals belonging to such person. Owners become strictly liable for the actions of their dogs.

Nebraska’s strict liability statute on dog attacks and dog bites allows for recovery for damages without a showing of negligence on the part of the owner. If you have been bitten by a dog, make sure you file a dog bite report with the Nebraska Humane Society.
